I wholeheartedly disagree with ICANN's agreement with Verisign to allow large price-bumps on the wholesale price of .COM domains over the next several years. I also do not appreciate that ICANN has made these new agreements with Verisign without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. The decisions made by ICANN in secret with Verisign, go against the idea of a free and open internet without monopolization, and these decisions clearly manipulate and increase the control and power of specific organizations (ICANN and Verisign), leaving consumers with no other alternatives when buying .COM domain names except to accept the increased price-burdens. Please tell me where there is an undo burden of increased costs and management of .COM domains on ICANN or Verisigns behalf. This is purely a money grab and I'm sure that eventually some department of the government will put a stop of these types of random and secretive and sudden price-hikes. What can I say? I am old, unemployable, and about to be declared disabled, meaning my income will continue to be so far below the poverty level, I’ll most likely end up homeless. My one hope for a decent standard of living is to make a little online. My plan, such as it is, may be a delusional dream, but every penny matters to me right now, and domain name expenses are unavoidable, and every single dollar matters. The thought of a 50-70% increase, even over a period of a few years, is disheartening. Of all the ways big companies can control the internet, why does one have to be to seemingly work to completely eliminate the lone content provider who just hopes to make a few extra dollars a month?

I am a Namecheap domain holder and the proposed name charge increases by ICCAN do not auger well for the customers like myself or the internet community as a whole. 1) If the price increases are effected yearly as proposed, then by the end of the decade the domain names will be unaffordable for the users. 2) In an open and democratic system, stackeholders are consulted when such drastic measures are suggested and in this case neither the domain name registrar's not their clients were consulted to hear our views. 3) This price increase is calculated to benefit only on player...ICCAN! 4) ICCAN is paving way to become a competitor to the domain name registrars who are their customers. What is the justification for an increase of this magnitude? The costs for operating a domain registrar have gone DOWN, so there IS no justification other than greed. The secret closed door manner in which this was negotiated is another indication of how underhanded it is. This proposed amendment should be soundly rejected. The chilling effects this will have on non-commercial site operators will compound year after year, making it increasingly difficult to have a voice in a growing corporate online landscape. I have No idea if somebody will actually read any of these emails or not, So, I am going to try to leave this very short. I'm a single mother who already works two jobs, and some times three. Even with bringing home two paychecks what are the equivalence of possibly a full-time position, I still absolutely struggle to make ends meet. I'm trying to compensate and have a little bit more money in my pocket via the Internet. The price that it costs me right now, I can barely scrape it together as it is. For that price to be raised. Would make it completely unattainable and no longer an option. All I want is to provide a good life for my children. And around every corner someone is trying to raise prices and make everything cost more to make everything more difficult and it's making it virtually impossible for me to be able to do that for my children. Just saw that .com pricing will more than likely be rising. Very bad idea. It's a guarantee I will stop buying .com domains if that happens. I'm not a business. I don't have extra money - I don't buy domains that are more than $10-12. I know I'm not alone. Part of the draw of the .com isn't just that it's "a .com" but that it is one of the most attainable TLDs. Change that, and I believe you'll lose more than you'll gain. I have been self employed for nearly 20 years. Last year, I was forced to return to the employment sector and this year, I am back at opening my business. It is extremely hard for small businesses to keep track of all of the “tiny” fee’s that pile up. Even as a volunteer for non profits, I find it difficult to get smaller companies to get connected on-line. For example, I volunteer for a thrift shop that donates all of their income to community events. Its been a struggle to get them to understand why paying for a domain and a web site is important for future growth of the company. Having access to a web site is vital for any business. We already see how google has taken away small business to funnel attention to third parties that charge high fee’s for “new clients”. One such gimmick had masked a web site to look and act like mine. When my patients called to book their appointments, they were lead to believe I had hired a new reception. Turns out, this company expected me to pay them to book my own clients by lying to my clients. As a small business, I am constantly struggling to keep up with a constant changes in technology. Another example, someone took away one of my business names and asked me to pay 250.00 for my own web site back. I told them to kiss my ass. I had another fellow do that with my first business. He actually tried to hold my web site hostage to force me to pay him more money. I also told that guy to kiss my ass. I tell alot of people that try to bully me to kiss my ass and I refuse to partake. Please, dont be like the other bullies that try and steal web sites away from small companies and force them to pay high fee’s to keep what they have already purchased. Thank you Dr. Erin T. To Whom It May Concern — We represent a couple hundred small and micro businesses and non-profits who we help keep their domains registered and working and keep their websites up and accessible to the world. The possible changes in the .COM registry are extremely concerning. Giving essentially a blank check to raise the price of .COM domain names more than 70% over the next decade would be an unfair burden for the organizations we help. Contrarily, the large .coms will not even notice such increases. Please find another way to recover these costs and keep the Internet a more level playing field for everyone. You are going to drive these smaller players into the not as well regulated and potentially harmful ‘vanity’ tlds and the public at large will lose. It is incredibly concerning that you are making these contact changes in secret. This is a big deal and if these unjustified increases come to pass, more regulation will come to this industry via government agencies and that isn’t necessarily a good move, either, but certainly would be one you would want to avoid. Hello, I'd like to formalize my objection to the increase in price of the .com domain. This is purely a cash grab by ICANN and Verisign. You ignored the comments opposed to the .org, .biz and .info price increases and said they were just space, trust me this is not spam. This is from the .com domain that I've had registered since 2001 and will continue to do so for as long as it's affordable. Once you increase the price past that I will move on to another domain, most likely one of the free or cheaper domains allowing that money to go elsewhere.

As a small business owner and domain name holder, I am writing this comment in the hopes of convincing ICAAN that the proposed .com price increases will be detrimental and wholly unjust for consumers (just as removal of price caps in 2009 despite overwhelming public comment was.) This amendment serves to only benefit Verisign and ICAAN, and places unjust financial burden on internet users! Why was this amendment created without imput from the very people it impacts? I can only surmise because you wish us to just be quiet and bear the financial costs of your lucre and dishonesty? This is wrong! In reading the proposed amendment, two obvious "why"s are left unaddressed: 1. Why is only Verisign contributing U.S. $20 million dollars? Why isn't the (increased) burden of supporting ICANN shared among all registrars? 2. ICANN has always been tasked to preserve and enhance the security, stability and resiliency of the DNS. What has changed? Why is the *additional* funding needed now? Without this information, the proposal looks like a monopolistic plan agreed to without public participation to increase revenue without justification for what the additional revenue will be used for. This is disturbing and deplorable because of contemplated price increases. Price increases by themselves are not a concern, but what is concerning is that there is no accountability for the new revenue, so potentially Verisign could use the additional proceeds to pad its profits rather than benefit the Internet community. The proposed price increase agreement between ICANN and Verisign lacks accountability, transparency and honesty. This deal appears to contain all of the necessary elements for an improper quid pro quo and could fall under a variety of conspiracy laws. I recommend ICANN slow down and provide a full explanation of the benefits of this deal and a full accounting of who will benefit financially. I do not think that you should allow Verisign to operate as a registrar as it will decrease the competitiveness of the domain market because they already control so much of it. Additionally the maximum that you should allow the prices of domains to be increased is the amount of inflation each year (average the rate of inflation from the major developed markets: US, Europe, Canada, China, Australia, etc). This keeps the costs down to users that need it. You could try allowing a revenue based pricing scheme so that rich companies pay more for their trademarked names (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Toyota) if more revenue is really needed from somewhere. -- Cheers, Josh Smith

This amendment would permit a monopoly of the most popular TLD in use. The exact provisions permit a dramatic increase in pricing as well as a totalitarian level of control by Verisign. This should not happen. Individuals across the world rely on the distribution and competition within this space, centralizing pricing and control in Verisign would dramatically alter this. At this current moment, the .com domains are just accessible enough to anyone who has is trying to get a business off the ground, or is running a free service online. An increase in price will make these things a lot less accessible to the general public. .com domains are at this moment, the domain the most respected online. I can start a .com service and it'll be recognized as the official version of the service. Most other TLDs do not have this luxury. The web should remain accessible, and domains like .com should not be restricted only to those who happen to already have a lot of money- rather also those who are trying to get something new off the ground. Negotiating an increase in .com domain registries is all good and well, but it's a decision which impacts the entire internet. Such a large decision should not be made privately by two organizations. If the FCC's decision on net neutrality is any indication, a public comment period is hardly a democratic process. I don't care if I have to pay a bit more for my domain registration; 70% on top of $20 is hardly worth arguing about. I'm just concerned with maintaining the democratic nature of the internet. If you allow prices to be increased then the availability and ease of use of a .COM domain will be taken away. In addition there is little technical reasons for price increases as the cost of it is decreasing over time. Allow for price increases would be a huge blow to anyone trying to break into the online space and stifle potential innovation. I recently read about a price increase that will take place over the next several years for registration/renewal of .com domain names. This is very alarming to me, as a small business owner who works out of my home, with several .com domains. My business expenses are already a significant tax on my revenue and I am concerned about this change. There is little to no information about what this increase is for and what will be done with the funds collected. Making a blanket increase regardless of the size of the business or the revenue is unfair. It makes the internet an exclusive business opportunity for big companies. Couldn't you use some sliding scale that protects small businesses? Transparency calls for this basic service to explain what is going on to all involved. I currently use my .com as a means to promote myself as a UX designer. I can’t even get a callback for an interview without having my work on the internet. This is not tax-deductible, but just a necessary course for my career. I am surprised, and very disappointed with ICANN which I have believed be an organization which really looked after the functionality, fairness, etc as regards domain names. Now I see a "deal" was made, that allow Verisign to become register, increase prices, etc, etc, and they are now set up to take full control of the domain name registration, and market, and become a virtual monopoly. It makes one wonder, what "incentives" the ICANN officers have seen, in order to vote for this change. If ICANN want to be trusted and have be considered an organization that can be considered 'reliable, honest, and without corruption" it is important that this agreement is canceled, AND that everything is managed in a transparent way. Hello, I'm writing to express concern around the new .com price increase. I run a personal blog every year that results in a net loss every year, but gives back to communities, just the way the internet used to be and was founded on (sharing knowledge). In addition, I have several domain names for hobbies that have helped me learn new technologies. In these cases, the domain increase further adds to that burden and prevents individuals like me from having a chance to free voice and further push my learning through the internet. I understand infrastructure is required to handle domain names, but technology has not only become more efficient but become cheaper. Increasing efficiency and driving down cost should not result in a higher priced product, rather it should result in a more adoptable product that allows others to succeed. Domain name registration should be treated as a public utility rather than as a profit center, operated with the minimum expense needed to achieve its goals, and providing a utility-like return on whatever invested capital it requires. You likely shouldn't increase prices on .COM domains, the low prices are part of the open internet. It smells a lot like when ISPs wanted to give some packages priority over others. Kind regards

Verisign shouldn't have influence over the pricing of domains. These hidden deals need to stop, this method of influencing how the internet is run is corrosive and far more dangerous than a small price increase.
