RSSAC Caucus Travel Support for IETF 116 Yokohama, Japan

Dear RSSAC Caucus members, RSSAC Admin Committee understands that ICANN organization may be sharing new sponsered travel information and guidancefor ICANN community to attend non-ICANN events in the next weeks. As a result, travel support to attend even-numbered IETF meetings may be available once again. In order to not miss the relevant notice periods, RSSAC Admin Committee would like to start the selection process to identify sponsered RSSAC Caucus members to attend the next IETF meeting. IETF 116 will take place in Yokohama, Japan from 25 - 31 March 2023. Pending the travel advice from ICANN organization, there may be travel support for up to four (4) RSSAC Caucus Members to attend IETF 116 including economy class airfare, accommodation, registration, and per diem. As you may remember, RSSAC approved guidelines for RSSAC Caucus members requesting travel support to attend even-numbered IETF meetings in 2019. Please see the approved guidelines attached. Depending on how many requests we receive, the RSSAC Administrative Committee may need to make the selection based on the selection criteria outlined in the guidelines. List of Research Papers about the RSS, was Possible new work for the Caucus

Dear RSSAC Caucus, The RSSAC held their monthly meeting Tuesday and discussed the possibility of the Caucus hosting a list of research papers about the RSS. I took an action item to write this mail to the Caucus to continue the discussion and provide some feedback from the RSSAC. Any list that the Caucus maintains will likely be incomplete and can never be authoritative. There will always be papers that we don’t know about and the list will certainly grow over time. So while it’s an interesting idea, we may be biting off more that we can chew. We expect the list to start with a large number of papers (maybe 50-100?) and will grow significantly over time. [I recently helped create a similar list on routing security for the SSAC’s publication SAC121, and that list has a little over 100 entries, I suspect this list will start with a similar amount.] At that point it’s no longer a simple list, but rather a list of lists that must be broken up into categories. The management of this list would certainly require a considerable labor investment. It would be best if the people who want this list are therefore the ones who curate it. We can develop guidelines for curation, but the actual work should be handled by those who want to volunteer for creating and maintaining the list. A good first step would be for a Caucus member to curate a list themselves of the kind of papers they would like to see and share it. Maybe someone reading this already has such a list. Finally, assuming the RSSAC Caucus takes this work on and we develop guidelines for curation, are there any volunteers who are interested in managing this list of papers? Thanks, Andrew

Annual RSSAC FAQ Review

If there is interest in updating an answer or adding a new question/answer I will start a Google doc and we can work on refining the language. NUDGE: Caucus reviews of the existing metrics on RSSAC002v4

Greetings again. The Work Party for the revision on RSSAC002 (from v4 to v5) has a work item to: Review existing RSSAC002 measurements to determine whether they require updating to accommodate changes in DNS technologies. As part of that work item, I created a GDoc page for comments from people as the do their reviews: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EOxYU8yIYhI4uELPmHVj4w8LmJFwzioUleHlgDC… So far, Abdulkarim and Dessalegn and I have done those reviews, but it would be grand if others in the Work Party and in the larger Caucus would do so as well. Fellowship Selection Committee Members typically serve for two years, which encompass six ICANN public meetings. Work for this role will begin around September 2023 to make selections for ICANN79. Current RSSAC representative to Fellowship Selection Committee is Amir Qayyum. Amir will be completing his second two-year term around June 2023 after the selections for ICANN78 have been completed. Dear Harish, Your mail below brings up issues that you believe exist in the current process. However, you have not proposed any actual changes to the process. If you have changes to the process you would like to propose, please propose them. If there is then significant inerest from the Caucus we can explore them further, and if there is consensus from the Caucus we can implement them. Without some kind of proposal and without considerable interest from the Caucus no change to the process will be made. So if you are interested in changing the process, make a proposal and see if others on this list are interested as well. You can start with the pdf that Steve Sheng sent with his mail on January 5th. Whether we decide to update the process or not, the outcome of the IETF 116 travel funding random selection stands. Any updates to the process will only affect future IETF travel funding distribution. Please correct me if I am wrong. There are a few potential disadvantages of using a Publicly Verifiable Nominations Committee (NomCom) Random Selection process, such as the one outlined in RFC 3797. Some of these include: Complexity: The process outlined in the RFC is quite complex and may be difficult for some people to understand or implement. Time-consuming: The process of selecting nominees through random selection can be time-consuming, especially if there are a large number of potential nominees. Limited pool of nominees: The random selection process may not yield a diverse group of nominees, as it is based on chance rather than a deliberate effort to seek out candidates from underrepresented groups. That is what I had highlighted. Lack of accountability: Because the selection process is random, there is no way to hold individuals or groups accountable for the nominees that are chosen. Limited transparency: It can be difficult for members of the community to understand or verify the selection process, as it relies on complex mathematical algorithms and cryptographic techniques. Exclusion of certain people: Some individuals may be excluded from the selection process if they are not able to provide the necessary information or meet the requirements outlined in the RFC, which can be a limitation. As a result, travel support to attend even-numbered IETF meetings may be available once again.
