Security Incident Reporting Work Party Update

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, Robert, Ken, and I met yesterday to discuss the RSS Security Incident Reporting Work Party document. We merged the typical grammar nits, but the big change is that we moved Section 4.5 into Section 5. The moved text in Section 5 is now highlighted. There are two things we would like the work party to think about for our next meeting. -Should Sections 5 and 6 be merged? -Should the idea of Section 6.3 remain in the document? The idea of Section 6.3 was to describe a means for the public to contact the RSS about a security incident or vulnerability that affects the RSS. This could be like a “bug report” function that could provide some confidentiality in the reporting process. The overall document is about how the RSS pushes information out, but this would be the opposite direction. Some examples of this happening are reports posted on DNS-related chat rooms, or emails via IANA to an RSO. If 6.3 remains in the document, should we describe generic roles for an RSS GS to further specify and implement? Or should we propose more detailed requirements for such a feature? Thanks, Andrew

Security Incident Reporting Work Party Update

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, Robert, Ken and I just met to discuss the RSS Security Incident Reporting Work Party document. Below is a summary of changes. -Examples from Sections 4.1 - 4.4 have been moved to Appendix B. Comments, including attribution, on the examples have been transferred as well. -Significant text has been deleted from Sections 4.5 and 5.1. RIR Critical Infrastructure Address Policies

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, Based on the conversation yesterday in the Guidelines for Changing IP Addresses Work Party, I looked into which RIRs have special policies for critical Internet infrastructure or some other address policies that recognise DNS root servers as special. TL;DR: AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, and LACNIC have policies for critical Internet infrastructure IP address allocations that includes DNS root servers. AFRINIC https://afrinic.net/policy/manual 5.6.4.1 AFRINIC will make End-User assignment to critical infrastructure providers of the Internet such as public internet exchange points and core DNS service providers. These allocations will be no longer than a /24 using IPv4. Multiple allocations may be granted in certain situations. Exchange point assignments MUST be issued from specific blocks reserved only for this purpose. 5.6.4.4.2 Core DNS service provider: A core DNS service provider is a company who provides DNS service for the root level of the DNS tree (ICANN-sanctioned root operators). APNIC https://www.apnic.net/community/policy/resources#a_h_6_2_3 https://help.apnic.net/s/article/Critical-Infrastructure APNIC makes assignments for critical infrastructure including DNS root servers. ARIN https://www.arin.net/participate/policy/nrpm/#6-10-1-micro-allocations-for-… 6.10.1. Micro-allocations for Critical Infrastructure ARIN will make micro-allocations to critical infrastructure providers of the Internet, including public exchange points, core DNS service providers (e.g. ICANN-sanctioned root, gTLD, and ccTLD operators) as well as the RIRs and IANA. LACNIC https://www.lacnic.net/682/2/lacnic/ 2.3.3.2.Micro-Assignments to Critical Infrastructure LACNIC may grant this type of assignment in case of projects and network infrastructure that are key or critical for the region, such as IXPs (Internet Exchange Points), NAPs (Network Access Points), RIRs, ccTLDs, among others. RIPE https://www.ripe.net/publications/docs/ripe-826/ RIPE has a special TLD Anycast space for use in TLD anycast networks. It cannot be kept when no longer used for TLD anycast services.
