Some news from Kathy

Dear all A number of you have expressed the wish, both on and off list, that Kathy remain with the Review Team. Like me, you value her contribution to the team as Vice Chair, her deep knowledge of the ICANN WHOIS history and enjoy working with her. On an issue as divisive as the WHOIS, it is a challenge to bring together a cohesive team, which is capable of working in cooperation whilst respecting the diversity of views. I believe that we are well on the way to achieving this. Like me, some of you have expressed confusion about what the process is in this sort of situation. In order to gain a better understanding, I have today written to the selectors of the Review Team, Rod Beckstrom and Heather Dryden, to ask for clarification in this regard, and also to the Chair of the Registries constituency. I have requested that the Review Team be allowed to make representations in the event that a replacement is requested. Of course, we are not in control of the selection, and will respect the wishes of the selectors and the ICANN community. However, I am sure that you would join me in seeking clarification of the process, and to request some input into it. Some News from Kathy

Dear All, I wanted to share some news. As some of you might know, I am no longer with PIR. I certainly loved being there, but have moved on to other projects (please see statement below). I delayed in sharing the news with you because we were uncertain of my status within the Review Team. It is the one area I was most concerned about because we are a team, and I did not want to leave midway through our very important work. I value working with you everyday, and I know that our work serves a very important purpose for ICANN, for the Community and for the Internet. With ICANN Staff, David Maher (chair of the Registries Stakeholder Group) and others we reviewed the appointment to the Review Team. Is the appointment a personal one or a representative one? In the end, I asked David Maher to return to the Registries Stakeholder Group to ask if I should continue or if a current-Registry-representative should be appointed. I wanted to share that it looks as if the Registries will be appointing a new representative; they have asked for volunteers amidst the fulltime Registry community. Emily and I will let you know of their response. Let me share with you my departure statement below, and while I am not saying good-bye yet, I truly want to share with you my great respect and appreciation for every member of our Team, and for our incredible collective effort. We are creating new ground, and I think we are doing it well. Kathy leaves PIR to finish her documentary on the work of the ENIAC Programmers, the six women who programmed the first all-electronic, programmable computer during WWII. With the passing of Jean Bartik on March 23^rd , Kathy felt it was critical that she finish her long term project in this area and share this powerful story. Our call next week - preparation

Hi everyone, Next Wednesday's call is important for us to progress our work prior to Singapore, and I would like everyone to make a special effort to attend if at all possible. Our priority has to be to complete our work on the Issues Paper, and have it published for comment prior to the Singapore meeting, as it will effectively be the agenda of our outreach meetings during that ICANN meeting. What worked very well previously was when everyone gave some time to reviewing the paper and sending comments to the list by the Monday before the call. That way, we can hopefully close off a couple of issues, and also understand areas where there are different views. So, I'd like to encourage everyone to do the same this time. To that end, Alice, please can you circulate the latest version of the paper, updated since our last attempted call. Kathy and I have been discussing a suitable agenda for our face to face, and this is our ideas so far. Kathy suggested that it would help us all prepare to have a detailed breakdown of what we hope to accomplish under each agenda item. I would be very pleased to have your reactions and agenda suggestions. Another task for us all to get started on is drafting up the definitions and policy sections of the report for circulation prior to Singapore. Hello all, Unfortunately I won't be able to make tonight's call on the discussion paper, and have instead made some comments and suggestions in the attached (in revision mode, and with comment boxes) which I hope will be helpful. I think the paper is starting to look very good, and one that will hopefully draw out some useful community feedback. As you'll see, I've noted a couple of questions that I think we'd already agreed to delete, and also proposed an additional sub-component to one question which I'd be very interested to get community feedback on. I've also commented on the proposed 'costs' section of the paper, which I have some questions and concerns about. I look forward to reviewing the version that comes out of tonight's call asap after its available. Dear Review Team members, Oh well, what a "conference call" - sorry for the inconvenience! This was just one of those days, with the phone bridge going down - Alice had continuous contact with the Adigo operator promising that they would be up on their backup system "in five", and we hoped that would mean "seconds" or "minutes", but finally called it quits after 30 minutes. There was some consolation, though, in the fact that editing progress was made in the Adobe chat room, and as promised a new version of the Discussion Paper is attached, hopefully reflecting the agreements reached. The remaining comments and edits from Peter are also included, i.e. those pertaining to the sections not yet addressed.
