At-Large-selected Director -- Election Update

Hello, By now I hope you'll all be aware of the fact that the At-Large Community is, for the first time ever, selecting a Director for the ICANN Board. The election for this is happening very soon. Under the current voting scheme, there are four voters from each region -- the ALAC members and the RALO Chair. In NARALO, that means the eligible voters would be Alan, Beau, Gareth and myself. However, since Alan is a candidate, he cannot vote. Because there are only 20 voters, each vote is important, so I have asked the Nominating Committee to substitute NARALO Secretariat Darlene Thompson as a replacement voter for our region. Apparently the NomComm is debating this issue and I have been invited to participate; I will let you know how this progresses. As agreed in the last NARALO meeting, I made a commitment to hear the views of NARALO members regarding the three candidates. There has been a community conference call held with the candidates; a recording of that meeting can be found at http://audio.icann.org/atlarge/Community-Call-Director-13-11-2010-EN.mp3 In addition to that (two-hour) call, many of the regions submitted questions of the candidates, some weeks back I solicited questions from NARALO members which were presented to all candidates on your behalf. Other than in previous years, the planning cycle is now starting earlier in the year to allow for increased collaboration with ICANN¹s stakeholder communities. As part of this effort, Kurt Pritz, Senior Vice President for Stakeholder Relations in ICANN, recently participated in the EURALO and LACRALO monthly calls and gave a presentation on ICANN¹s Strategic Plan Development outline. Questions for Board candidates

Hello all, Regardless of the direction of the ongoing petition debate, we are going to eventually have an election for the Board position; from at very least the three agreed by the BCEC and possibly one other being considered for petition. In the interest of At-Large's making an informed selection from amongst the candidates I do not want to wait for the end of the petition process to start guiding the NARALO voters to informed choices. And I made a commitment to know the preferences of NARALO ALSs and individual members as I consider my own selection. In view of that I *urge* NARALO members to view the online statements of interest. Here are the SOIs for the candidates put forward by the BCEC: Alan<https://community.icann.org/download/attachments/2265195/At-Large+Director+…>, Pierre<https://community.icann.org/download/attachments/2265195/At-Large+Director+…>and Sébastien<https://community.icann.org/download/attachments/2265195/At-Large+Director+…>. I also include Avri's<https://community.icann.org/download/attachments/2265195/At-Large+Director+…>in case the petition succeeds. I am aware that ICANN staff are arranging a community call at which the candidates will be able to advance their causes for election. However, in addition, I would also like to solicit NARALO members for questions to be given to each candidate, to which they will be asked to provide a written response. Such questions, which would go beyond the issues stated in each person's SOI, would allow candidates to give thoughful, complete answers on issues in a manner that simply isn't possible in a crowded, multilingual conference call. One does not replace the other; I am proposing a questionnaire as a complementary way for us to determine which candidate best serves the community's needs. Please let me know your questions; try to keep them as neutral and relevant as possible. If the collection is worthwhile I will assemble them, submit the questionnaire to candidates early next week, and publish the responses as they are received. If you have a question of a particular candidate (based on something in their SOI or history) please also submit them, though I'm not sure yet if/how I'll do that. Thanks! - Evan
