One important issue concerns "variants" which occur when a single character can be identified with two or more different Unicode Code Points with graphic representations that may or may not be visually similar. IDN variants contain one or more such characters and therefore, if not handled correctly, might result in user confusion or a poor user experience. In an effort to develop potential solutions for the delegation of IDN variant Top-Level Domains (TLDs), IDN Variant Project Teams, consisting of volunteers, subject matter expert consultants and ICANN staff, have conducted case studies in six scripts, produced an integrated report, and are currently underway to completing three projects investigating potential solutions for IDN Variant TLDs delegation. One of these projects is called the Examining the User Experience Implications of Active Variant TLDs Project (P6). The purpose of the project is to gain an understanding of issues that could arise from activating IDN Variant TLDs and offer recommendations to users to avoid such issues. Examples of user roles that have been identified include registrants, registrars, registry operators, system administrators, network operators, application developers, and end users. Project team has published for public comment the Draft Final Report for Examining the User Experience Implications of Active Variant TLDs <http://www.icann.org/en/news/public-comment/variant-ux-18jan13-en.htm> and is seeking to establish a dialog with the community to refine proposed principles, impacts and recommendations of the study. Hi All Recently I setup the ISOC Canada WordPress site at a Shared Hosting website due to price but upon research and discussion with Joly and others I discovered that Shared hosting opens your site to potential hacking. Research revealed that the site is shared with 3,500 others. Here is some research on the risk http://www.epicwinhosting.com/blog/is-shared-hosting-secure/ *Question: Is it worth the difference?* Secondly, Upon discussion with the hosting company they don't have a VPS service to upgrade the account. Thirdly When I did a WHOIS on the name this was the first thing I found. No response yet from the hosting company, Ticketed the item with their support on this issue as well. Almost feel hostage. Glenn On the security issues .. Shared hosting - yes your site sits on servers with other sites, but that doesn't mean it's more secure than a VPS VPS or dedicated etc., - your site sits on a server (virtual or physical) that you control In the case of a VPS you have a lot more freedom and you can do all sorts of "fun" things if you want, but you also end up being responsible for keeping the VPS server up to date and patched. If you use shared hosting, however, the service provider is going to be looking after the servers for their entire customer base. Of course the more common issues we see are site defacements where hackers take advantage of exploits in plugins / themes for popular CMS, such as Wordpress or Joomla. Not to argue with the potential problems of shared hosting, it is not synonymous with the hosting company registering the domain name for you. You can register your own name and then point it at a shared host site. NARALO Reports, Teleconference and Other items

NARALOer's (-ites?), Thank you for your help and patience while I continue to fit into my new role as NARALO Chair. I've been working on the best way to synchronize monthly reports and teleconferences. Since the teleconferences occur usually in the middle of the month I am striving to have the monthly reports out by the last day of the month or the first day of the new month. This way we can have a sort of continuity every 15 days or so. Any comments are welcome. Hi A couple of months ago I propose we look at a mobile strategy to reach the broadest audience Interesting here is one of the grants from the Internet Society *Open Internet* Project organizer: Alex Blom, The Netherlands Chapter in Collaboration with the Sri-Lanka Chapter Based on the EC BEREC report on traffic management practices in Europe which shows that blocking of VoIP and P2P traffic is common, and also that regulating bodies are not whiling to take action unless pressed to do so by politicians or large numbers of consumers, this project aims to generate public and authorities’ awareness on this situation by developing 2 mobile apps (one for iOS, one for Android) that enable a user to test in a very simple way whether certain applications are blocked or obstructed by their fixed or mobile Internet provider. -- Glenn McKnight mcknight.glenn(a)gmail.com skype gmcknight twitter gmcknight Http://www.globalcatalysts.com http://newsocialmedia.wordpress.com
