At-Large, Next month (December) ISOC-NY is sponsoring a panel on the topic of Public Interest Commitments. At this point there will be three segments to the panel: * General introduction and update on PICs and their role and status at ICANN. * A look at the .pharmacy TLD and its possible on American health. * Finally, City-PICs will take a look at the 2,000 Premium Names that have been set aside for .nyc and the prospect of getting PICs linked into some or all of them, e.g. require local news on news.nyc. If anyone has a contribution to make in preparation for the panel, especially if you know of people in the city who have focused on the issue and might be willing to participate, please let me know. The Charter allows the ALAC to name five people and our intent is to select one per ICANN region (based on citizenship as per ALAC membership). Under the assumption that the charter will be ratified by the majority of ICANN ACs and SOs, the selection of ALAC representatives is now beginning. Members must be familiar with, or be prepared to quickly learn about, current ICANN accountability measures and the earlier Accountability and Transparency Review Team (ATRT) efforts (see https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/enhancing-accountability-2014-05-06-en, Section "Inventory of ICANN's Accountability Efforts"). Members must also commit to actively participate in the activities of the CCWG-Accountability on an ongoing and long-term basis. Note that this is for the SELECTION COMMITTEE to select among the candidates that submit Expressions of Interest to be Members on the CCWG. In addition, ANYONE can take part in the CCWG as a Participant. You just need to sign up, attend teleconferences and participate in the e-mail list. Hi alan, Le-Marie was was of the catalysts behind our ALS starting and she wants to get more involved in the icann accountability and iana transfer issues. Le-marie is on our isoc-dc board and has been very active with our isoc-dc chapter for over 5 years having organized a few panels, handling social media and also helping run events. As you may know The board of ISOC -DC did not want to become an ALS, so a few of us who were active with isoc-Dc started our on ALS. Le-Marie was one of the main instigators and was listed as co-head with me on our application. She is an entrepreneur having created a startup to work on a web application for conflict minerals and an engineer. Hope this helps for her bio and introduction. Call For Volunteers: Join A Generation Panel, Speak Up for Your Language

Kindly see the details below. ** Speak up for your Language! Join a Panel Today In the past, labels in the Internet's Root Zone could only contain ASCII characters. The rules for creating new top-level domain labels were simple: labels must (i) only be composed of letters in the English alphabet, and (ii) consist of two to 63 characters. All of that is changing now. The future holds a multilingual Internet, where a user from anywhere across the world can navigate entirely in his or her native language. Be a part of this historic change! ICANN is calling for volunteers to serve on one of several panels that will define the rules for generating new top-level domain labels for the script or writing systems for their community. Join a Generation Panel today by emailing idntlds(a)icann.org. Make sure to tell us the language you speak and the script or writing system you want to get involved with. Please help inform and motivate others to join as well. The goal of these panels is to support the use of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) by determining what is a valid top-level domain label in each script or writing system. This involves answering three questions: (i) which subset of characters from the various scripts can be used to form a label*, (ii) which of these characters (if any) may be considered confusable or variants by end users, and (iii) what are additional constraints** on these labels? As there is a single Root Zone, all such label generation rules for all the scripts must be merged into a single reference, which is called the Label Generation Rule-set (LGR). The ICANN community has established a procedure<https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/lgr-procedure-20mar13-en.pdf> to develop the LGR for the Root Zone. This procedure is divided into three steps: 1. The basis is a subset of Unicode code points which may be appropriate for the Root Zone and called the Maximal Starting Repertoire (MSR). 2. Communities representing various scripts (e.g., Arabic, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Greek, Chinese, Latin, Thai, etc.) are invited to organize into Generation Panels to start from the MSR and propose the label generation rules (which contains the three types of rules defined above) for their respective scripts. 3. The script-based proposals developed by the communities are reviewed by a panel of experts called the Integration Panel. Proposals that meet the criteria in the procedure<https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/lgr-procedure-20mar13-en.pdf> are integrated into the LGR by the Integration Panel. The LGR is incrementally built upon until it contains all the necessary scripts. For Step 1, ICANN recently released the Maximal Starting Repertoire (MSR-1)<https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2-2014-06-20-en>, covering 22 scripts (Arabic, Bengali, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Georgian, Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Han, Hangul, Hebrew, Hiragana, Kannada, Katakana, Lao, Latin, Malayalam, Oriya, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu and Thai) and containing 32,790 code points short-listed from 97,973 allowable code points from Unicode version 6.3. Work on additional scripts will be completed soon. Step 2 is now underway; ICANN needs your help in developing proposals to extend the Root Zone LGR to cover each of these scripts. There is a role for everyone: general script community representation as well as volunteers with knowledge of scripts, linguistics, Unicode, IDNA/DNS or policy. We received finally after months of followup with this organization Consumers Council of Canada. It is based in Toronto, Canada They have been doing some interesting research funded by CIRA http://www.cira.ca/about-cira/community-investment-program/ Consumers Council of CanadaDevelop practical guidelines for the display of findable, usable and relevant online agreements (i.e., End User License Agreement, Terms of Use/Service, Privacy Policy) to improve understanding of increasingly important terms and conditions and privacy considerations relevant to most Canadians, expanding the trust required for a healthy, sustainable Internet environment.
