Dell Colludes With RIAA, Disables Stereo Mix

All, More ongoing shanagans by the RIAA effect users in a negitive way. So again, isn't it time that ICANN, the GNSO, and the IPC revoke the RIAA's membership? See: A link to a Maximum PC story, which begins: "Details of Dell's surreptitious collusion with RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) have emerged. Apparently, the computer manufacturer http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/dell_colludes_with_riaa_disables_ster… disabled the Stereo Mix/Mono Mix/Wave Out sound recording function on certain notebooks to assuage RIAA. The hardware functionality is being disabled without any prior notice and one blogger has even alleged that he was asked by Dell's customer support staff to [shell] out $99 if he desired the stereo mix option. Gateway and Pac Bell are the other two manufacturers to have bowed to RIAA at the expense of their customers' satisfaction and disabled stereo mix without warning." Election time

As was mentioned last month, it's the one-year anniversary of the creation of NARALO, and the positions of Chair and Secretariat are one-year terms. According to NARALO's Operating Principles, Item 5: "The governance of the NARALO will be exercised by a General Assembly, formed by 2 representatives of each member ALS and 2 members from among the unaffiliated individuals. Each year the General Assembly shall elect a Chair and a Secretariat. Each member of the General Assembly shall be allowed to cast a vote. The election can take place by electronic mail, online balloting, written balloting, or any other means deemed convenient and accurate by the Secretariat. The Chair shall act as moderator and facilitator of the work of the NARALO. The Chair shall be empowered to issue Calls for Statements of Interest for service on the ALAC and to sign and receive any official correspondence to and from ICANN or the At-Large Structures. The Chair and Secretariat shall be ineligible to serve on the ALAC or ICANN's Nominating Committee in any year in which they serve for NARALO." Both Darlene and myself would like to stand for re-election to the positions of Secretariat and Chair, respectively. Nominations for either position will be accepted up until the conference call on Monday. If there are no other nominations put forward by that time, I will seek by consensus a renewal of our terms during the Monday call. Otherwise Darlene will determine the method for holding a proper election in accordance with the voting guidelines as stated above. - Evan

RIAA's SafeNet Caught In a Lie

All, The RIAA now has resorted to being intentionally untruthful... Very unprofessional and unseemly indeed of their legal staff. Isn't it time to revoke the RIAA's membership in the IPC to be revoked? Seems to me this action is long past due... Google Caches Retain Stolen Data - Shouldn't ICANN require Googles registry shut down google until this is fixed?

All, Well seems Google has again been exposed for it's errant and inconsiderate as well as violation of privacy ways... Shouldn't ICANN request in the best interest of users to temporarily shut down Google until Google permanently fixes this and clearly demonstrates it has done so? Or does ICANN fear the mighty power of Google?!? How can members of the public, trust Google or ICANN if Google is allowed to continually disregard the publics privacy in light also of Google purporting to be now handling Electronic medical records and exposing users, especially the elderly, indigent children, and the disabled, or their families, to massive potential fraud and/or medical blackmail? And FWIW, where is DOC/NTIA, USDOJ, and DHS on this? I hope it is not "ho hum, twiddle my thumb"... I for one and very glad SANS at least, is on the job! >:) Perhaps they should be retained by ICANN, DOC/NTIA, USDOJ, and DHS in a mentoring program on a VERY long term basis. Joe and all, In this case, yes it is about public trust and confidance mostly. But it is also about accountability and transparency as well as competance. Did ICANN do it's due diligance before accrediting these "Secret" registrars, and when did they do it? Where is the data regarding the particulars of this due diligance documented? What was the nature ( specifics ) of that due diligance? When, if ever, will ICANN make publically avaliable the locations of these Registrars and the contact information for each? And finnaly, why wasn't or isn't this information publically avaliable now? There may be very reasonable reasons why these 67 Registrars locations are not publically known. If so, ICANN should make that information also avaliable for public review and perhaps questions in those regards. We all have to remember the decisions on some if not most of these undocumented Registrars were made by a ICANN GNSO and Bod that in part does not now exist and that may not have been given accreditation today. I don't offer this as an excuse or reason, only as food for thought. I and many of our members have often thought that ICANN has acted as if it is not bound by US law and policy and that it is a US Non-Profit California 501(c3) corporation. When it even appears that it is or has done so, it should be open to be made aware by any member of the public that it has or is possibly acting or considering to act in such a manner, and address that preception or relitive fact immediately and with the open participation of the public. Failure to do so, as ICANN has too often done, engenders distrust and creates more problems for ICANN's Bod and staff than it is worth. George and all, Your correct on your analysis and conclusion IMHO. FWIW though, it is clear that ICANN cannot or will not do the oversight of it's registrars, or for that matter registries and indeed may prefer to defer those duties and responsibilities back to the Registrar and/or Registry. Ergo a circular round-robbin endless dysfunctional self regulation methodology. LEA's at various levels are not wanted by ICANN nor Registrars and Registires for obvious and some nefarious reasons which many of us are all too well aware of or have personally experienced. Just as frankly however, LEA's don't seem to be able to properly, securely or reasonably manage their own Domain Names either as recent GAO reports and breaches that have been reported clearly demonstrate. ( I can easily provide many examples if requested ) Given Afilias's history, IMO it's long past time to dis-accredit Affilias as a registry. They can't even "Police" their own domain name's DNS or web site, let alone serve as defacto police of their registrants. They also seem to have serious problems in their DNS services for other domain names despite their BS marketing jargon. I consider Afilias a significant infrastructure security risk of significant proportion. Proposed GNSO Top Level Implementation Plan

REMINDER: Please submit comments by 17 July 2008 http://www.icann.org/public_comment/#gnso-tlp Proposed GNSO Top Level Implementation Plan Explanation: At its 25 June 2008 meeting in Paris, France the GNSO Council voted to invite public comments on the 21 June 2008 version of the GNSO Improvements - Top Level Plan prepared by the GNSO Improvements Planning Team. The document contains some initial documentation on methods that can be followed in beginning the work required to transition from the current GNSO organization to the type of organization ultimately recommended by the ICANN Board - including the areas of process, operations and collaboration with other ICANN entities. Before any methods can be put into practice, the plan needs to be reviewed by the GNSO and the ICANN community at large and approved by the GNSO Council and endorsed by the ICANN Board.
