Infographic describing UA issues

Hello to everyone on the Universal Acceptance Comms Mailing list: As part of my work with the Domain Name Association and communications about the value of domain names, we are developing a set of infographics to explain that value and the opportunities in new domain name extensions. It recently occurred to me that we should create a set of infographics describing the UA situation: to explain ASCII / IDN problems and IDN email. I think that ICANN could fund their contracted infographer / cartoonist / illustrator, XPLANE, to do an infographic or set of infographics describing the Universal Acceptance issue (or they could fund a vendor of our choosing). XPLANE works best when the participants describe a situation and they draw it on the fly. The they go back and refine the drawing. I see a relatively small number of us around a virtual table: e.g., Elaine Pruis of Donuts, Jordyn Buchanan or Brent London from Google, some communications experts, and a few IDN experts. At the end we could have a pretty cool product that would explain the problem in plain fashion. We can have the product in a very short period of time. The DNA Marketing guys or some of you can take the finished product and work out some media partnerships to get them published. XPLANE is the company that drew up the Domain Name Ecosystem a couple years ago and recently ICANN flew three XPLANE staff to Istanbul to illustrate the CWG and CCWG proceedings on IANA oversight transition and ICANN accountability. Our task is considerably smaller in budget and greater in value. If you think this is a good idea, I can write a request to ICANN for your review. Kurt

G’day and welcome to this UA Project Group. (NB: This note will appear in each of the Project Group mailing lists) The purposes of this note are: * To get people to introduce themselves * To share the work that’s already been started * To build a list of ideas that this group would like to work on The time frame is between now and the 31st of March. Below is a list of Stakeholder Groups that were identified during a meeting earlier this year. We broke the list into Doers, Influencers and different Channels for engagement. Clearly some Influencers (like Government) will also be Doers as they have their own IT systems that will have to be made UA Ready. We also identified priorities and whether that groups impact would be High, Medium or Low and whether engagement would be Easy, Medium or Difficult. Top Service Providers (like Facebook, Twitter, and other giant global or regional players), for example, were given a high priority because the Impact would be high even thought the Ability to contact may not be so easy. I’d like to start some discussions and suggest the following: 1. Please introduce yourself 2. Start brainstorming topics that you think should be address by somebody. It would also be useful to identify things that you would like to work on. 3. Review the list and share sectors that you think are missing or if one of the categorisations is materially wrong. I’ll start: I’m Don Hollander, based in New Zealand, and a long history of supporting ICT development in the Asia Pacific Region, most recently as the GM of APTLD. I’m keen for the following to happen sooner than later: * A guideline that IT people can use to determine if their systems are Universal Acceptance (UA) Ready. * A measurement program that we can use to see how much progress UA is making. * A White Paper that cn be used to show the opportunity that being UA ready can provide to an organisation – particularly commercial organisations. * Some models for local (national) engagement to advocate UA readiness. Similar models for different industry sectors. * Establishing some good practices with respect to IDN e-mail handling So, it’s now your turn. I look forward to hearing from you.
