We know there is a lot of information to digest when you join a GNSO Working Group and these monthly meetings are an opportunity for newcomers and more experienced participants to meet in an informal setting without the pressure of "real work" that needs be done. The agenda is flexible. The presenters will be ready with a standard set of materials if people would like to discuss them. Feel free to submit questions, either in advance or at the beginning of the meeting, if there is a topic that you would like to explore in more depth . Translation and transliteration study published

Dear TNT PDP Working Group, I would like to bring to your attention to a recent published report evaluating solutions for the submission and display of internationalized Contact Data. Specifically the study addresses the following areas: * The accuracy implications for transforming internationalized contact data. The study explored tools for (i) transliterating internationalized contact information to ASCII, (ii) translating internationalized contact information to English, (iii) transcribing internationalized contact information to ASCII, or (iv) a combination of these techniques. * Current Practices for handling internationalized contact data. The study report describes the practices of: > 1. Electronic merchants and online service providers in other industries, who > often accommodate submission or display of their content in multiple > languages. The study examines how their websites handle internationalized > contact information. > 2. Domain name registries and registrars, who currently operate in geographies > where local languages require use of character sets beyond ASCII in Latin or > non-Latin writing systems. The study surveyed the submission and display > practices of internationalized registration contact information for such > registries and registrars. * Limitations of technical protocols to handle internationalized contact data. The study looked at what constraints current relevant protocols may also place on submission, storage, transmission and display of such data by registries and registrars. NAF use of WHOIS

Dear WG members, Following Petter¹s question, I reached out to Kristine Dorrain from the National Arbitration Forum. She confirmed that the NAF does indeed use the WHOIS data, but they only copy-paste the information as displayed in the WHOIS. So to them it is irrelevant whether the information is accurate and/or in Latin or any other script. You will find our conversation in full below. If a Whois record says Mickey Mouse, address 1234 Main Street, that¹s the respondent according to the UDRP/URS etc. If a registrar or registry were to notify us when we request the domain name lock that there is another contact information for Respondent (billing information under UDRP, a removal of a privacy service, etc) we will serve that information as well. The URS does not require thatit only requires that we serve the information in the Whois, but we take the extra step to prevent problems with service due to Whois inaccuracies a Registrar was trying to fix. Dear all, During the call of May 5 we have been working on the overview table put together by staff (Lars & Julie : many thanks) and ended up at nbr 9. Chris Dillon has put the responses and recommended actions together, which you can find below. Record 1 WG Response: It may be necessary to confirm that the second use of “English” refers to a transliteration to the Latin alphabet. Recommended Action: Confirm we have understood correctly Answer: Y Record 2 WG Response: A future IRDS will contain contact information in non-ASCII scripts. Recommended Action: How do they see this being implemented in each member state? Answer: N/A Record 3 WG Response: The option using scripts representable in the current WHOIS is undesirable, as it could only cope with a strange subset of languages. The option linking WHOIS to non-ASCII systems is undesirable as it would be implemented differently locally and could end up becoming a poor long-term solution. Recommended Action: A new IRDS as soon as possible.
