Hi I was thinking of Garth Bruen today while watching PBS and today they said that Boston got 100 feet of snow already this year. Evan and I live on the north shore of Lake Ontario and we got maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow all year. Garth good luck on digging out, perhaps by spring! NYTimes: Harvard and M.I.T. Are Sued Over Lack of Closed Captions

Fascinating article in the NY Times about Harvard and MIT being sued for failing to close caption their online classes. The suit charges that both universities violated anti discrimination laws by failing to provide closed captioning in their online lectures, courses, podcasts and other educational materials. As Glenn, Gunela, and I have been both advocating the failure to provide captioning or in using you tube other services to provide captioning that is not correct is also something that we need to work on. As the article says: “Much of Harvard’s online content is either not captioned or is inaccurately or unintelligibly captioned, making it inaccessible for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing,” the complaint said, echoing language used in the M.I.T. complaint. “Just as buildings without ramps bar people who use wheelchairs, online content without captions excludes individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.”online content is either not captioned or is inaccurately or unintelligibly captioned, making it inaccessible for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing,” the complaint said, echoing language used in the M.I.T. complaint. “Just as buildings without ramps bar people who use wheelchairs, online content without captions excludes individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.” Advocates for the deaf on Thursday filed federal lawsuits against Harvard and M.I.T., saying both universities violated anti discrimination laws by failing to provide closed captioning in their online lectures, courses, podcasts and other educational materials. Something we all need to all think about and why i have been pushing the pilot so hard so we can get the metrics to build a case for captioning icann wide. ARIN and NARALO MOU

Hi All NARALO took the bold step to sign a MOU with ARIN and joined with APRALO and AFRALO in being the third in the family of five RALO's who made the decisive step to reach out the local RIR in it's area and build stronger relationships together. You may not know that ARIN has routine meetings in North America, Caribbean, and Canada It's geolocations are slightly different than Icann's mapping leaving the US far eastern territories under the the eastern RIR . ARIN also does *ARIN On the Road* events in cities which are smaller scale educational events. These events are ideal to help jointly promote local outreach to universities and local businesses. Congrats, Loris, a most welcome development we all should support! I am checking if there is any similar organization here in Brazil, where there are substantial numbers of indigenous peoples. As I recall there were groups in Acre, Amazonas and Bahia active on the Internet, probably more. And the Andean and Central American countries as well as Paraguay, and to a lesser extent I think Argentina, have large indigenous populations. Dear Colleagues The Global Indigenous Persons Mentorship Program was recently established by ICANN to encourage and improve engagement with existing members representing indigenous populations. Native Public Media has submitted a proposal that will increase our engagement at ICANN and NARALO meetings and events. Here is a brief summary of our request: To realize an authentic “One Internet, One World” all must be at the table. Until recently, American Indians and Alaskan Natives were not at the table, much less, a part of the conversation. Native Public Media, Inc. (NPM) is the inaugural Native American member on the ICANN At-Large Committee/NARALO and advocates for the interests of 566 federally recognized tribes in the United States. As new comers, it is important that the Native American stakeholders are present not only to educate and engage others in the decision making process and to create relationships that ignite unique idea generations that benefit all at ICANN meetings, but ultimately, to share with those represented across Tribal communities.
