As always, registration for ICANNs meetings is free for anyone wanting to attend. What Is ICANN? To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internets unique identifiers. ICANN doesnt control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesnt deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internets naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.

Dear All, Following the recent news on IPv6, the At-Large Staff has been asked to organize a community briefing call on the issue. Leo Vegoda, Operational Excellence Officer IANA at ICANN, will talk about the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 and touch on several issues, including: Historical/Technical Aspects * Brief history of IPv4/IPv6 * Difference between IPv6 and IPv4 * Current status of the transition * Operational aspects/Technical challenges Policy Aspects * ICANN’s Role in the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 * Current policy situation and future challenges * How are Internet users affected by the transition? * Practical steps for At-Large to help with the implementation of IPv6 The teleconference will be moderated by the ALAC Chair, Olivier Crépin-Leblond and take about 45 60 minutes. Internet Society Senior Manager for Public Policy Sally Wentworth is among the invited participants in the Canada Internet Forum <http://cif.cira.ca/> (CIF), taking place in Ottawa on Feb 25 2011. Organized by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) the forum is the culmination of a consultation process that has involved six face-to-face meetings and an an online discussion. The forum results will in turn be carried forward to the forthcoming Internet Governance Forum (IGF). The CIF will be webcast and allow remote participation via Adobe Connect. It's not me that needs convincing. Evan and Gareth (and you) would need to argue that case, and they have made their opinions on the matter known. And I am in agreement that if producing a statement that says not much more than "freedom good, lockdown bad" would do more harm than good, then we shouldn't. But if we could take to them something that resonates, such as an information source as Eric proposes, or, call me crazy, is there something we could do/create/publish, given our technical and political expertise, that might somehow help users find their way around an Internet block? Information always seems to find a way...is there an alternative conduit? Or some sort of technical/legal intersection that would give us a lever on which to craft a statement?
