You will recall that on the last NARALO call I mentioned that we were working with the ICANN 66 hosts on an ICANN 66 “preview event” consisting of a panel discussion and small reception. What tools do public safety officials have to pursue Internet-based crimes? Is it possible to have a website and remain anonymous? Should it be? How will data protection regulations around the world affect how this information is handled? Internationalized Domain Names for a Multilingual Internet Half of the earth’s population is now online. Internet addresses in multiple alphabets – Arabic, Cyrillic, Mandarin, Devanagari and others – are helping to connect the next billion users. The economic benefits will be in the billions of dollars, with a significant narrowing of the global digital divide. New generic Top-Level Domain Names – New Options for Web Addresses Until a few years ago, website addresses ending in .COM, .NET, .ORG and .CA predominated. There are now hundreds more address extensions (known as top level domains, or TLDs): .QUEBEC, .GURU, .CLUB , .BMW, .SAMSUNG, to name few. A potential new wave of TLDs will be added, with opportunities for businesses, communities and individual Internet users. Domain Name Abuse and the Origins of Cyber Threats Phishing, botnets, and DDOS attacks are among a growing range of cybersecurity risks. In some instances, Internet addresses are compromised in ways that enable these abusive practices. The best defenses will require collaboration across borders and among diverse parties in the online ecosystem – as well as broad based education on best practices. Multi Stakeholder Governance of a Global Technical Resource The ICANN model for Internet governance is unique. Businesses, governments, technologists, advocacy groups and individual users work on equal footing to reach global consensus on complex policy issues. At 20 years old, the model is evolving. A debate on its next iteration is currently underway. Please note that the survey will close on 13 September 2019 at 23:59 UTC. ** Dear All, The third Accountability and Transparency Review Team (ATRT3) has published a survey for individual input which can be found here: http://input.icann.org/app/survey/response.jsp. The aim of this survey is to collect input from ICANN Community members on ICANN’s accountability and transparency and help the ATRT3 Review Team to identify areas which require improvement and could benefit from recommendations. The ATRT Review is one of the few mechanisms which can directly impact ICANN’s accountability and transparency. We need your input to ensure our recommendations can address your issues in these areas. Hello fellow NARALOers As some of you may already know, Thomas -- leader and main activist of the NARALO At-Large Structure "connecting.nyc" -- died last month <http://www.tributes.com/obituary/show/Thomas-John-Lowenhaupt-107389262>. I only read about it this morning, practically by accident, in an email on the ALAC mailing list discussing Rules of Procedure which used Thomas' death to talk about ALAC's relationships with ALSs. I would prefer that At-Large's written recognition and memory of Thomas be more than such a callous passing remark. There was a moment of silence on the August call but nothing here on the mailing list which is the main news source for those of us who can't easily make the calls. Thomas' ALS was one of the first in NARALO, and he was always deeply involved in its activities. As first Chair of NARALO I found him a pleasure to work with. He was extremely well-read and knowledgeable on his realm of passion and expertise -- the concept that world cities could use Top-Level Domains to empower their citizens and get them more engaged in their community. Tom and I disagreed on a few views, but we agreed on far more regarding the role of the private individual in the growth of the Internet -- exactly ICANN At-Large's reason for being. At all times I found him either a worthy debate opponent or a skilled partner in advocacy, combined with a calm and upbeat tone so rarely found in these corridors. Tom's presence here will be missed.
