Conrad is visiting China, India, Japan and Singapore over two weeks. He will be meeting regional stakeholders to share information about ICANN's technical role in the domain name ecosystem, and explore potential partnership opportunities in the technical field. He will also visit major technology firms and research institutions to better understand key regional technological developments. "The mission of my office is to constantly improve knowledge and technical operation of the unique identifiers of the domain name system that ICANN helps to coordinate. This tour is very much in support of that fact-finding and knowledge sharing mission," said David Conrad, ICANN CTO. "I used to live in Asia and appreciate the creativity and innovation that emerges from this region. I'm hoping to find some 'hidden gems' and opportunities to collaborate in areas such as further improving the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet's global identifier systems," he continued. During the visit, Conrad will meet with regional ICANN community representatives including government, contracted parties, technical community and academia to discuss topics such as: * Domain Name System (DNS) security – the DNS translates names into numbers called Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. ICANN coordinates this addressing system to ensure that all the addresses are unique and we can have one global Internet. DNS security looks at measures to protect the DNS e.g. safeguarding your server. * DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) – this is a suite of extensions that add security to the DNS protocol by enabling DNS responses to be validated. This technology was developed to protect against vulnerabilities in the DNS that allow an attacker to hijack any step of the DNS lookup process and take over control of a session. Full deployment of DNSSEC will ensure that the end user is connecting to the actual website or service corresponding to a particular domain name. * Key Signing Key (KSK) Rollover – ICANN is changing of the "top" pair of cryptographic keys used in DNSSEC protocol to protect the DNS. The KSK rollover will take place on 11 October 2017. All network operators who have enabled DNSSEC validation must update their systems to ensure that services are not interrupted on 11 October. * Public Technical Identifiers (PTI) – an affiliate of ICANN, PTI is responsible for the operational aspects of coordinating the Internet's unique identifiers and performs the IANA functions for domain names, number resources and protocol parameters. "I'm very happy that David is here to engage with the Asia stakeholders. We hope that through this trip, we can increase the region's contribution and participation to ICANN, especially from the technical perspective," said Jia-Rong Low, Vice President and Managing Director, ICANN Asia Pacific. Developing Cultural Intelligence at ICANN Every global organization has the challenge of understanding cultural nuances and differences. ICANN is rich in its cultural diversity and global reach. Developing cultural intelligence at ICANN is a learning experience focused on improving cultural knowledge and awareness. We will examine our behaviors and beliefs and how they impact our awareness and interaction when working with people from different cultures. This program will explore the dual dimensions of culture. The Intercultural Awareness program will include interaction, discussion, and activity about similarities and difference around the world and around the room. Additionally, we will consider specific cultural challenges ICANN faces and how to best overcome them. When The program will begin with a webinar prior to the meeting on 3 November in Abu Dhabi. We will have follow-up phone calls to address related topics that come up during the meeting. Why Participate The topic of culture has come up repeatedly during the ICANN Academy Leadership Program. The request was made to address this in a separate program. Who Should Attend Ideally participants will have attended the ICANN Academy Leadership Program. However, any interested community members are welcome to participate. Who is Designing the Intercultural Awareness Program Like ICANN's Academy Learning Program, developing cultural intelligence will be designed by the ICANN Academy Working Group members in partnership with Incite Learning, Inc., a professional development firm. Incite Learning, Inc. has been working with ICANN for several years. A team will be created to solicit and provide input on program content and structure. RDAP enables users to access current registration data and was created as a replacement for the WHOIS protocol. The goal of the pilot program is to develop a baseline profile (or profiles) to guide implementation, establish an implementation target date, and develop a plan for the implementation of an RDAP-based solution. Proceeding with a pilot program will provide an opportunity for Registration Data Services (RDS) operators to gain operational experience and for producers and consumers of RDS data to participate and provide valuable feedback. The Nominating Committee is charged with recruiting and selecting a portion of ICANN’s leadership. The Nominating Committee is mandated to ensure that ICANN’s overall leadership is diverse in geography, culture, skills, experience, and perspective. An Independent Body at the Community’s Service Hans Petter Holen, the Chair of the 2017 Nominating Committee, shared the following statement about the 2017 Nominating Committee results: “As Chair, it is my honor, pleasure, and duty to report that the 2017 Nominating Committee has completed the task assigned to it by the ICANN community and made the selections shown above. I want to thank the Nominating Committee for its work and dedication, in working constructively and efficiently together to reach final agreement. I want to extend special thanks to Joette Youkhanna and Jia Kimoto for excellent support to the committee. I also want to thank Zahid Jamil and Stephane van Gelder for supporting me on the Leadership Team throughout the year, and Stephane van Gelder for providing the Committee and the community with regular report cards on our work. Community Priority Evaluation is a method to resolve string contention, described in full detail in section 4.2 of the Applicant Guidebook (AGB)[newgtlds.icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__newgtlds.icann.org_en_…>. The evaluation determines if the community based application qualifies to earn priority and eliminate all non-community applicants in the contention set as well as any other non-prevailing community applicants. In CPE, the application is evaluated against the following four criteria: Community Establishment; Nexus between Proposed String and Community; Registration Policies, and Community Endorsement. The evaluations were conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The EIU was selected for this role because it offers premier business intelligence services, providing political, economic, and public policy analysis to businesses, governments, and organizations across the globe. At various times in the implementation of the New gTLD Program, the ICANN Board has considered aspects of CPE process, including certain concerns that some applicants have raised regarding the process. Below is additional information about the review, as well as the current status of the CPE process review. Below is the current status of the Review since the last update. Current Status of the Review The 2 June 2017 update[newgtlds.icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__newgtlds.icann.org_en_…> made clear that the Review is being conducted in two parallel tracks by FTI Consulting Inc.’s (FTI)[fticonsulting.com]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.fticonsulting.com_&…> Global Risk and Investigations Practice (GRIP) and Technology Practice. The work of the first track, which focuses on gathering information and materials from the ICANN organization, has been completed. The work of the second track, which focuses on gathering information and materials from the CPE provider, is still ongoing. The interview process of the CPE provider personnel that had involvement in CPEs has been completed. FTI is also working with the CPE provider to obtain the reference materials for the evaluations that are the subject of pending Reconsideration Requests[icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_resource…>. The CPE provider has been producing documents on a rolling basis. FTI is currently evaluating whether the CPE provider’s production is complete. Once the underlying information and data collection is complete, FTI anticipates that it will be able to inform ICANN of its findings within two weeks. Recently, the ICANN Board and the ICANN organization have received numerous inquiries for documentation and information about the Review. The webinar is based on a study commissioned by the Competition, Consumer Trust and Consumer Choice Review Team[community.icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__community.icann.org_pa…> (CCTRT) as part of its examination of consumer trust and effectiveness of safeguards that were built into the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program. In defining the parameters of the study, the CCTRT sought to measure rates of common forms of abusive activities in the domain name system, such as spam, phishing, and malware distribution. The study compares rates of these activities between new and legacy gTLDs, as well as employs inferential statistical analysis to measure the effects of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), domain parking, and registration restrictions on abuse rates using historical data covering the first three full years of the New gTLD Program (2014 – 2016).
