CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: ALAC Leadership Team 2021-2022

Dear All, Maureen Hilyard, ALAC Chair, has requested that a call for nominations be issued for the other four members of the 2021-2022 ALAC Leadership Team (ALT) from the four remaining regions: - Africa - Europe - Latin America and Caribbean Islands - North America Maureen Hilyard, as ALAC Chair, will automatically take the APRALO ALT slot. The terms of the 2021-2022 ALT will begin at the end of the 2021 AGM until the end of the 2022 AGM. This selection is carried out in accordance with the ALAC Rules of Procedure Section 17.3 (RoPs - https://tinyurl.com/rhcnffkx ). Nominations may be made by any current ALAC Member. Nominees need not be an ALAC Member at the time of the nominations, but must have an expectation of being an ALAC Member after the completion of the upcoming virtual ICANN72 Meeting. Requirements for ALT members can be found in Section 6 of the ALAC RoPs. In short, ALT members are expected to attend all ALAC meetings, typically one ALT-Plus meeting per month, and be very responsive and thoughtful to e-mail requests and discussions. By mutual agreement, ALT members may take on additional roles. Vice-Chairs are expected to take on proportionally larger responsibilities. All ALT activities are carried out solely in English. Maureen has indicated that she expects to continue the practice of having two Vice-Chairs. Nominations may (but are not required to) specify whether the preference is for a Vice-Chair or a regular ALT position. The nomination period is now open and will close on Tuesday, 6 October 2021 at 23:59 UTC. Nominations need not be seconded. Nominations, other than self-nominations, must be accepted by Tuesday, 13 October 2021 at 23:59 UTC. Dear All, With the Annual General Meeting approaching, I would like to inform you that with my re-appointment to the ALAC, I am also willing to continue in the role of ALAC Chair for one more year. This note is in line with the ALAC Rules of Procedure: *8. 2 - If the Chair is still a member of the ALAC in the year following his or her selection, is willing to continue in that role and subject to the eligibility rules in Paragraph **5, the Chair’s term is deemed to be automatically renewed for a second year without any explicit action of the ALAC.* I intend to work to complete the work I have committed myself to, as the Chair, and to spend the second year of my APRALO term "on the bench", assisting the transition of the new Chair into his/her role. Dear All, The monthly roundtable 7 (by EURALO): “DNS Abuse and intermediary liability of non-hosting providers” is scheduled on Tuesday 21 September at 18:00 UTC for 90 minutes. The EURALO Roundtable will focus on recent ICANN responses to the DSA package and welcome input from leading European academics, who had reported on Internet governance, the DNA package and intermediary liability to the European Comission. Guest Speakers: * Tobias Mahler, University of Oslo, Tobias Mahler is a law professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo, where he is deputy director of the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law (NRCCL). He specializes in information and communications technology law and is the legal research leader of the VIROS project (Vulnerability in the Robot Society). His research is highly interdisciplinary, primarily combining legal research with computer science. His research interests cover a broad range of legal issues arising in the context of (i) robots, particularly with artificial intelligence capabilities, (ii) Internet governance (especially the domain name system), as well as (iii) cybersecurity and privacy. This focus on legal issues is complemented with research on legal technology to facilitate novel approaches such as legal risk management and visual representations of legal reasoning. He holds a PhD from the University of Oslo, an LLM degree in legal informatics from the University of Hannover, and a German law degree (first state exam). He has practised law in Norway as a corporate lawyer in the automotive industry, primarily working with international commercial contracts. Guest Speakers: * Tobias Mahler, University of Oslo, Tobias Mahler is a law professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo, where he is deputy director of the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law (NRCCL). He specializes in information and communications technology law and is the legal research leader of the VIROS project (Vulnerability in the Robot Society). His research is highly interdisciplinary, primarily combining legal research with computer science. His research interests cover a broad range of legal issues arising in the context of (i) robots, particularly with artificial intelligence capabilities, (ii) Internet governance (especially the domain name system), as well as (iii) cybersecurity and privacy. This focus on legal issues is complemented with research on legal technology to facilitate novel approaches such as legal risk management and visual representations of legal reasoning. He holds a PhD from the University of Oslo, an LLM degree in legal informatics from the University of Hannover, and a German law degree (first state exam). He has practised law in Norway as a corporate lawyer in the automotive industry, primarily working with international commercial contracts.
