Call for Volunteers ALAC Liaison to the SSAC

The current Liaison to the SSAC, Julie Hammer, is stepping down and the ALAC is soliciting volunteers as possible replacements. The ALAC Liaison to the SSAC is a full SSAC member and as such, the ALAC will only suggest possible candidates to the SSAC, subject to their decision to admit the person in accordance with their own rules and processes. Among the characteristics to be considered by the ALAC in considering possible volunteers are: - Technical knowledge of the Internet and DNS; - Knowledge of and prior experience with security and stability issues. - Knowledge of the ALAC and the ability to consult with and speak on its behalf; - Maturity, good judgement and diplomacy. - Willingness to act as the ALAC Liaison in addition to SSAC internal responsibilities Prospective volunteers are encouraged to review: - SSAC overview at <https://www.icann.org/groups/ssac>https://www.icann.org/groups/ssac. - SSAC Introduction pointed to in above page. - SSAC Operational Procedures pointed to in above page, with a specific focus on section 2.3 on New Member Selection. - SSAC Reports at <https://www.icann.org/groups/ssac/documents>https://www.icann.org/groups/ssac/documents Process to be followed: - from among the volunteers, one preferred candidate will be selected by the ALAC Appointee Selection Committee (AASC) with the assistance of Julie, subject to ratification by the ALAC. Alternate candidates may also be selected. An interview may be included as part of the selection process. - The SSAC will be informed of the selection and the preferred candidates will formally apply to the SSAC as per SSAC operational procedures. - If the SSAC accepts the preferred candidate, that person will be designated the ALAC Liaison to the SSAC. - If the SSAC does not accept the preferred candidate, either a backup candidate may be presented to the ALAC for ratification and will formally apply to the SSAC as per SSAC operational procedures, or the call for volunteers may be reopened. As the process within SSAC is quite a substantial one and must be scheduled after other applications already in process, the date by which the appointment will be concluded cannot be determined, but it is hoped that the entire process will be completed before the end of 2017. Conrad is visiting China, India, Japan and Singapore over two weeks. He will be meeting regional stakeholders to share information about ICANN's technical role in the domain name ecosystem, and explore potential partnership opportunities in the technical field. He will also visit major technology firms and research institutions to better understand key regional technological developments. "The mission of my office is to constantly improve knowledge and technical operation of the unique identifiers of the domain name system that ICANN helps to coordinate. This tour is very much in support of that fact-finding and knowledge sharing mission," said David Conrad, ICANN CTO. "I used to live in Asia and appreciate the creativity and innovation that emerges from this region. I'm hoping to find some 'hidden gems' and opportunities to collaborate in areas such as further improving the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet's global identifier systems," he continued. During the visit, Conrad will meet with regional ICANN community representatives including government, contracted parties, technical community and academia to discuss topics such as: * Domain Name System (DNS) security – the DNS translates names into numbers called Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. ICANN coordinates this addressing system to ensure that all the addresses are unique and we can have one global Internet. DNS security looks at measures to protect the DNS e.g. safeguarding your server. * DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) – this is a suite of extensions that add security to the DNS protocol by enabling DNS responses to be validated. This technology was developed to protect against vulnerabilities in the DNS that allow an attacker to hijack any step of the DNS lookup process and take over control of a session. Full deployment of DNSSEC will ensure that the end user is connecting to the actual website or service corresponding to a particular domain name. * Key Signing Key (KSK) Rollover – ICANN is changing of the "top" pair of cryptographic keys used in DNSSEC protocol to protect the DNS. The KSK rollover will take place on 11 October 2017. All network operators who have enabled DNSSEC validation must update their systems to ensure that services are not interrupted on 11 October. * Public Technical Identifiers (PTI) – an affiliate of ICANN, PTI is responsible for the operational aspects of coordinating the Internet's unique identifiers and performs the IANA functions for domain names, number resources and protocol parameters. We hope that through this trip, we can increase the region's contribution and participation to ICANN, especially from the technical perspective," said Jia-Rong Low, Vice President and Managing Director, ICANN Asia Pacific. We will examine our behaviors and beliefs and how they impact our awareness and interaction when working with people from different cultures. This program will explore the dual dimensions of culture. The Intercultural Awareness program will include interaction, discussion, and activity about similarities and difference around the world and around the room. Additionally, we will consider specific cultural challenges ICANN faces and how to best overcome them. When The program will begin with a webinar prior to the meeting on 3 November in Abu Dhabi. We will have follow-up phone calls to address related topics that come up during the meeting. Why Participate The topic of culture has come up repeatedly during the ICANN Academy Leadership Program. The request was made to address this in a separate program. Who Should Attend Ideally participants will have attended the ICANN Academy Leadership Program. However, any interested community members are welcome to participate. Who is Designing the Intercultural Awareness Program Like ICANN's Academy Learning Program, developing cultural intelligence will be designed by the ICANN Academy Working Group members in partnership with Incite Learning, Inc., a professional development firm. RDAP enables users to access current registration data and was created as a replacement for the WHOIS protocol. The goal of the pilot program is to develop a baseline profile (or profiles) to guide implementation, establish an implementation target date, and develop a plan for the implementation of an RDAP-based solution. Proceeding with a pilot program will provide an opportunity for Registration Data Services (RDS) operators to gain operational experience and for producers and consumers of RDS data to participate and provide valuable feedback. About RDAP Some of RDAP advantages over WHOIS protocol include: * Standardized query, response and error messages. * Secure access to data (i.e., over HTTPS). * Extensibility (e.g., makes it easy to add output elements). * A bootstrapping mechanism that makes it easy to find the authoritative server for a given query. * Redirection/reference mechanism (e.g., from a thin registry to a registrar). * Builds on top of the well-known web protocol HTTP. * Internationalization support for registration data. * Provides the option to enable differentiated access (e.g., limited access for anonymous users and full access for authenticated users).
