Training Course on DNS Industry - Business, Marketing, Operations and Legal Aspects 19 September 2016 This first training course of the new Centro de Emprendimiento e Internet will give an overview of the Domain Name System (DNS) industry, focusing on business drivers, marketing operations and legal issues. The goal of the course is to enable entrepreneurs to share knowledge and explore potential business opportunities in the DNS industry. Course Title: Business, Marketing, Operations and Legal Aspects Dates: 12 to 14 October 2016 Location: SENATICs Headquarters, Asunción, Paraguay Courses will be conducted mostly in Spanish, with some interactions in English. Ample time will be included for networking and discussions of regional business aspects. Post-course sessions will include an overview of the LAC DNS Marketplace Study and interactions with industry players that are partnering with the Center - e.g., registries and registrars. Syllabus Day 1: Inauguration of the Center, DNS Business and Legal Topics Day 2: DNS Business and Marketing Day 3: DNS Operations Trainers Michele Neylon, Blacknight Solutions Leon Sanchez, Partner, Fulton & Fulton SC Target Audience This training aims to prepare a qualified team to spread knowledge and contribute to the development of the Center. Applicants should come from disciplines and organizations focused on the Internet infrastructure and services: * Internet service providers * Hosting companies * Country code top-level domain (ccTLD) operators * Domain name registrar and resellers * Web designers * Digital marketing experts * Startup accelerators * E-commerce professionals * Business consultants * Legal experts Applicants should demonstrate leadership in Internet initiatives and a willingness and capacity to: * Disseminate the acquired knowledge in their local communities * Implement and encourage DNS business developments * Contribute to the multistakeholder community * Participate in future activities of the Center Selection Criteria and Financial Support The Center seeks decision makers at the highest possible levels from the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. The Center's Advisory Committee will select 25 trainees. Of these, 10 will receive financial support that includes roundtrip airplane tickets to Asunción, Paraguay, and accommodations. The selection criteria for receiving financial support will include LAC region geographic representation and how closely applicants fit the audience attributes described above. [ICANN]<http://www.icann.org/> News Alert https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2-2016-09-19-en ________________________________ Inauguration of the Centro de Emprendimiento e Internet in Paraguay Center Calls for Applicants for the First Training Course 19 September 2016 The Centro de Emprendimiento e Internet is an open initiative from Paraguay's National Secretariat for Information and Communication Technologies (SENATICs<https://www.senatics.gov.py/>), the Latin American and Caribbean Country Code Top-Level Domain Association (LACTLD<https://www.lactld.org/>) and ICANN<https://www.icann.org/>. The goal in establishing the Center is to contribute to the evolution of the Internet ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean region. The Center will serve as a knowledge repository and networking point for acquiring and sharing expertise, resources, training and support for the implementation of initiatives and projects in digital environments. Initially, the Center's focus will be on regional capacity building on the topic of the Domain Name System (DNS) industry ecosystem. The training and education will provide opportunities to team up with relevant partners to share experiences, build a network of experts and find new avenues to advance and strengthen the sector. The idea for the Center came from discussions between SENATICs and ICANN. These discussions resulted in an agreement to support the development of the Internet DNS industry in Paraguay and in the region. LACTLD joined the efforts to create synergies among the regional country code operators. The Center is now open and is seeking a wide range of partnerships from the industry. Regional stakeholders from the Internet governance community formed an Advisory Committee to guide the implementation and strategies of the Center. The committee is composed of Andres Piazza (General Manager of LACTLD), Antony Harris (Executive Director of CABASE), Ernesto Bojorquez (Commercial Director of NIC.mx), Gabriela Szlak and Celia Leman Friedman (eInstituto), Gonzalo Navarro (CEO at ALAI), Leon Sanchez (Partner at Fulton & Fulton SC), Mark King (Caribbean Region, Barbados), Rubens Kuhl (Manager NIC.br) and Vanda Scartezini (Polo Consultores Associados). The Center's inauguration event will be on 12 October 2016 in Asunción, Paraguay. This celebration will coincide with the first day of the Center's first training course. The Center seeks community participation: * Call for applicants for the first training course. The Center asks candidates from the region to apply for the Center's first course. The course, to be held on 12-14 October, will cover the business, marketing and legal aspects of the DNS industry. The Center will grant travel support for the 10 candidates who best demonstrate an interest in developing the domain name industry in the region, sharing what they learn in their local communities, developing business models and contributing for the further development of the Center. The study, conducted by Nielsen, examines domain name registrants’ perceived sense of trust, choice and experience in the current domain name landscape. The completion of this study concludes separate consumer and registrant survey efforts that serve as inputs for a community-based review team<https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=56135383> assessing the New gTLD Program in terms of competition, consumer trust and consumer choice (CCT). “The findings of this survey are similar to phase one results, showing there is stability across the domain name landscape,” said Akram Atallah, president of ICANN’s Global Domains Division. “The global registrant and consumer studies will play an important role in measuring the success of the New gTLD Program. I look forward to the CCT Review team’s interim report later this year.” Online survey participants included 3,349 domain name registrants aged 18+ in 24 countries throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and South America. The survey was administered in 18 languages. Key findings: Perceived awareness of new gTLDs remains steady, declines with legacy gTLDs * New gTLDs that were in both phases of the survey show similar awareness levels, with higher awareness reported in South America and Asia Pacific. * Awareness of several legacy gTLDs dropped slightly (by five to seven percentage points). Among new gTLD registrants, registering a single domain remains the most common practice * More than 30 percent of survey respondents indicated they registered a name in a new gTLD. * Of those who registered domains in a new gTLD, fifty-two percent had registered one name only, while thirty-four percent said they registered two to three domain names. * Reported registration of new gTLDs is highest in the Asia Pacific region. Registrants generally trust the domain name industry * Trust in the industry generally remains high, particularly in Asia. * Registration restrictions elicit higher levels of trust. * Positive reputational characteristics, such as business expertise and dependability, contribute to trust in the domain name industry. Many registrants choose alternative identities over domain names This was a new series of questions added in Phase Two to gauge the use of alternate online identities, such as social media accounts, blogs or other tools. * Twenty-four percent of these respondents said they chose to use a social media account instead of a domain name. * About 17 percent of the respondents said they did not renew a domain in favor of using an alternative method for managing an online identity. About the Global Registrant Survey and Supporting Materials ICANN commissioned the Global Registrant Survey in response to recommendations from the Implementation Advisory Group on Competition, Consumer Choice and Consumer Trust. ICANN conducted an open RFP<https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2-2014-07-16-en> and commissioned Nielsen to conduct the study in November 2014. In Phase Two, Nielsen surveyed 3,349 domain name registrants aged 18+. The survey was administered in 18 languages in June 20-July 11, 2016. Participants were drawn from 24 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Domain name registrants were selected based on their having registered at least one domain name and being a decision maker in domain name registration. Significance testing was performed at a 95 percent confidence level throughout the report. More than 1,150 new gTLDs have been delegated since the launch of the program in October 2013. The survey focused on a rotating list of new gTLDs with the greatest number of registrations at the time the questions were developed. Respondents were also asked about their awareness and familiarity with regionally relevant TLDs, including Internationalized Domain Names.
