ICANN Taps Senior Exec as new Communications VP

10 April 2013 For Immediate Release Seasoned International Executive Named to Lead ICANN Communications Team Duncan Burns to Guide Rapidly Expanding Communications Efforts Beijing, China The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that Duncan Burns has been named as the organization¹s Vice President of Global Communications. Burns is leaving Hill+Knowlton Strategies in Washington, D.C. to lead ICANN¹s rapidly expanding global communications team. ³Duncan has the international experience and leadership skills we need ³ said Sally Costerton, ICANN¹s Senior Advisor to the President for Global Stakeholder Engagement. ³He understands both our unique bottom up model and community as well as having the experience to lead the rapid internationalization needed as our new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program translates to ramped-up demands for qualitative international communications. I can think of no one better suited to guide those efforts than Duncan.² Costerton announced the hiring of Burns during ICANN¹s on-going largest-ever public meeting in Beijing. Burns has been with Hill+Knowlton Strategies since September 2000, working in both London and Washington D.C. on a range of national and international programs across the technology, energy, finance and NGO sectors. In 2011, Burns was appointed H+K¹s first global energy practice director, responsible for driving the growth of the energy practice worldwide and delivering best practice across the company¹s roster of clients and network of experts. Burns was also the interim general manager of H+K¹s Washington DC and previously senior vice president in the technology practice. ³I am excited to be joining ICANN at such an important time in its history as it enables the Internet¹s evolution into new languages, markets and beyond. I was part of a team that a couple of years ago worked with ICANN in its efforts to expand awareness of the organization¹s new gTLD program,² said Burns. ³I was impressed by the people I met and the way in which transparency and engagement are the core around which ICANN and its communications efforts are built.² In the last few years Burns has led teams working with, among others, Qualcomm, eBay, the Nuclear Energy Institute, Statoil and Better Place. ICANN Announces Establishment of Beijing Engagement Center

8 April 2013 For Immediate Release ICANN Engagement Center to Open In Beijing 46th Public Meeting in Beijing is Largest Ever Beijing, China ICANN President and Chief Executive Officer Fadi Chehadé announced today that the organization will open its first new global engagement office in Beijing. ³Engagement with China is not merely an option, we simply must engage at every level or we will lose our legitimacy,² said Chehadé. ³This is part of our effort to embrace the world.² The ICANN leader made the announcement during the welcoming session at ICANN¹s 46th public meeting in Beijing - the largest meeting in the 15-year history of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. So far more than 2,100 people have so far show up for the Beijing meeting. ³We¹ve never seen anything like it,² said Nick Tomasso, ICANN¹s Senior Director of Meetings. ³Last year 1,821 showed up for our meeting in Prague in the Czech Republic which, until now, was our largest meeting. JOBS to use the Trademark Clearinghouse database to support a sunrise registration period ahead of its planned open registration period to begin later this year. Established in 2006, .JOBS is uniquely positioned as a TLD Registry Operator never to have held a sunrise period prior to launching its initial general registration process. "Later this year and for the first time, .JOBS intends to open up the types of names that can be registered. This will allow people around the world to register whatever name they choose on a first come, first serve basis, so long as the types of registrants and types of registrations are consistent with the .JOBS Charter," said Tom Embrescia, Chairman of .JOBS. "As an ICANN authorized solution to rights¹ protections in the New gTLD Program, using the Clearinghouse to support .JOBS sunrise registrations is the best approach for the registry, as well as for brand holders before .JOBS launches open registration." The work of the EWG is expected to serve as a foundation to help GNSO create a new global policy for gTLD directory services, as part of a Board requested Policy Development Process (PDP) to be commenced upon the conclusion of the EWG¹s activities. Beijing presents a unique opportunity for the EWG to provide an update on its progress and to hear from the ICANN community to inform its post-Beijing work. The EWG invites you to attend their session on Monday, 8 April 2013 at 11:00-12:30 in Grand Hall A to share your comments and feedback with them (please refer to session details: http://beijing46.icann.org/node/37051) Participants will be invited to comment on questions currently under discussion within the EWG, including: · Whether collection, storage and provision of registrant data is necessary; · Whether to incorporate different registration data requirements for domain names for commercial use versus non-commercial use; · Whether and how anonymous registrations should be accommodated; · Potential costs/benefits of a distributed versus a centralized database; · Possible safeguards to minimize abuse and protect the privacy of registrants; · Whether and how remedies for inaccurate data should differ (for example, in cases of fraudulent, criminal, or malicious conduct); · Whether tiered access is desirable, depending upon the requestor¹s purpose.
