Acronym Helper

Dear all, One of the ideas to come out of the CCT - Sub team, 1 design scrum (see earlier post) was an Acronym helper. This has been requested many times and was discussed at the Sydney GNSO council meeting. One of my programmers has produced a BETA test and located it at: http://www.andalucia.com/icann Feel free to test it by entering the first letters of you favourite ICANN GNSO Acronyms. We used the out of date Acronym list currently on the GNSO website as the basis. I now respectfully ask the BC to Suggest an Acronym in the form at the lower part of the page. There are many to do. Feel free to pass this tool to other members and lists of the community who may find it useful. Any testing and comments welcome to me chris(a)andalucia.com In this way we will build up the Acronym database so that the Acronym Helper it will be ready to migrate onto the new GNSO website (in the header of every page) when it is launched in due course. GNSO council post on "formal request" from the BC on travel funding

Hi folks, I noticed this post on the GNSO Council mailing list that purports to be a "formal request" from the constituency: http://gnso.icann.org/mailing-lists/archives/council/msg07394.html "The BC formally requests travel funding for Philip Sheppard, as a retiring council member, for the Seoul meeting." I don't recall the BC taking a formal vote or discussing this matter at all. If some one can point me to the email(s) I missed in the archives, I'd appreciate it. Before we start handing out gold watches for retirement, perhaps these issues should be discussed internally amongst BC members first? With remote participation tools, certainly the need for a physical presence in 2009 is much less than say in 1985. 21 September 2009 Call for nominations for a Business Constituency representative to the GNSO Council This is to announce that an election will take place to elect a Business Constituency representative to the GNSO Council. The position open for election is currently held by: Zahid Jamil (Asia/Australia/Pacific) This position is for a two-year period, ending at the ICANN Annual General Meeting 2011. Nominations Nominations for candidates should be made by the designated representative of a paid-up member of the BC, nominating ONE other designated representative of a paid-up member of the BC. Nominees for this position must be a national of any these ICANN regions: Africa Asia/Australia/Pacific Europe Latin America/Caribbean Nominations are open from Monday 21 September 2009 and close at midnight in your local time zone on Sunday 27 September 2009. Nominations cannot be accepted outside of these dates. Nominations should be sent to the BC secretariat who acts as the officer for these elections. BC charter revision - basic principles

In order to shape any conference call on the Charter I wonder if members would be kind enough to provide thoughts on the following. Background Today we have 41 members, 3 elected volunteer member officers, 3 appointed credentials committee, and 2 nom com appointees plus a part time secretariat. Additionally a number of members contribute to ad hoc policy and other task forces etc. Issue 1 - the balance between doers and members What is the right balance between the number of annually elected positions and the membership size ? Today (and for the last 10 years) it is 3/41 = 7% Draft charter changes it to 5/41 =12%. The draft charter also envisages other admin committees totalling with the elected positions 13/41 =32%. What is the right balance between elected, appointed and ad hoc ? Are there one third of the BC willing to volunteer their time to non-policy work? Is there sufficient motivation to be a member volunteer for mostly non-policy work? Do members want one set of elections per year or several ? What does it mean if we conduct an election but less than half the members vote? Issue 2 - balance of independence As ICANN starts to offer more services what degree of independence do we want as a constituency ? Do members wish to authorise the release of their private data to enable ICANN staff for instance in the future to run BC elections? Do members wish to entrust ICANN with the funds in the BC bank account ? Or should the ICANN toolbox be a basket of services that the secretariat can choose from? Knowing how members feel on these higher level issues may help us move forward and reach consensus on the shape of our future Charter. Philip
