LAC WG Strategy

Dear BC Members, After the Toronto meeting and the presentation of the African Strategy, a working group for the Latin America & the Caribbean Strategy was formed in which the eInstituto is an active member. The group features Latin American and Caribbean participants from every SO/AC. Four key areas of interest were defined for the Strategy: Political Issues, Capacity Building & Outreach, Operations and Economic Issues. The Economic Issues focus on promoting and measuring the development of the broad DNS industry in the region, and eInstituto has been intensely involved in this aspect. We can highlight the following objectives from the 4 key areas that may be of interest to BC members: - To strenghten ICANN's engagement with regional organizations; - To promote security, stability and resiliency of the DNS as well as to facilitate the allocation of resources to guarantee the stability, security and resiliency of ccTLDs; - To achieve recognition in the region of the DNS industry as a separate industry; - To ensure accountability of organizations that receive ICANN funding; - To promote participation of corporations and organizations from the region in ICANN's multistakeholder model; - To join efforts for an adequate employment of IPv6 in the region; - To ensure adequate implementation of the new gTLD program in the region. - To reduce participation barriers for local economic stakeholders, by promoting online participation tools, creating clear and understandable outreach content, and publishing relevant Icann documents timely and adequately; - To create a regional dispute resolution provider, based in the region and responsive to the region's needs; - To support the accreditation of registrars, back-end registries, and DNS-related services in the region; - To support ccTLD business models and training. Special actions and success indicators were provided to implement and measure the execution of the strategy. Fwd: PayPal Security Security Concerns Regarding New gTLDS

I am sharing a letter I just sent to ICANN regarding security concerns PayPal has with certain strings that ICANN might delegate into the root as part of the gTLD process. Our concerns are not related to any applicant, any application, or a desire to interfere with the gTLD process. Rather, we are concerned that ICANN may not be adequately considering the implications of delegating strings like "corp" into the root. Hopefully the attached letter explains our position on these issues but I am available should anyone wish to discuss our concerns. Registry Conf Call & Proposal for meeting with .BRANDS

Good morning all. Just sending a note to the list to inquire as to how many BC members will be on the Registry call that is starting now? Perhaps our Secretriat could pull together a list for everyone's benefit? Separately, in preparation for this call I was going through the filings and came to realize (again) that that there are 637 .BRANDS from the 1900. Many of them are brands we know and some are BC members. Others we don't know. Question for the Ex Com: Would it not make sense to invite the .BRANDS to come to meet the BC in Beijing? For my part, it would be extremely helpful to hear from them and to have an opportunity to learn more. Perhaps we could invite them for the CSG breakfast on Tuesday, if guests have not already been scheduled for that meeting slot. It seems to me that BC members would benefit greatly from meeting with businesses that are applying for top-level domains. My two cents. Kind regards, RA Ronald N. "Study Group on the Use of Names for Countries and Territories" Draft Draft Final Report

Dear BC members, As some of you may remember I am a GNSO observer on the ccNSO “Study Group on the Use of Names for Countries and Territories” The group will meet in Beijing and although it is often marked as ‘closed’ on the schedule community members are welcome to join. We have now reached the stage of the first version of a draft report. Please note, it is presented as a “straw man”. As Paul Szylinder, the Chair states “From previous experience, I have assumed that the presentation of a rough draft text provides the best impetus for stakeholders to provide comment. That is precisely what I invite you all to do.” Please bear in mind this is a study group and not a working group. It is a ‘state of play’ document. Nothing in it will be relevant to the current first round of gTLD applications but it may be used by ICANN and Stakeholder for guidance in the second round. As any early comments gratefully received and I am open to discuss with members who are interested in this subject at any time. Next steps will be the publication of this draft Final report after Beijing and then a Final report for reception by the ccNSO council.
