This thread seems to have been split into two, one on At-Large and one on NA-discuss. I posted this comments on the NA-discuss list, but want to make it here too to ensure that we do not go off on a tangent... My apologies to those on both lists. To be clear, the NomCom review suggested that the ICANN Bylaws be changed to allow the ALAC to name two voting Directors to the ICANN Board of Directors (a subset of which the review sometimes called the Policy Board). This session will look at the experiences of several early adopter TLDs who may have involved the local community in the process of implementation of IDNs, to different extents, as well as users who have participated in those trials. Nominating Special Adviser on Internet Governance Policy

I'm re-nominating Jonathan Zittrain (bio here: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/home/bio_jzittrain) for the ad hoc position of Special Adviser to the ALAC on Internet Governance Policy, as I did in the month or so before the Los Angeles meeting. The reason I am proposing this is because I think the ALAC would find it valuable to consult an external expert on matters of formulating policy, in keeping with the ALAC's mission to represent the user community. I met Jonathan three years ago at a seminar at Harvard Law School's Berkman Center, and from there, we went on to work together in creating the StopBadware.org project (http://www.stopbadware.org) He has some great insight into the "big picture" of the Web and its future, and where the various component parts, such as ICANN, WSIS, WIPO, etc., etc., should fit, don't fit, do fit, need retrofitting, etc. Specifically, from his biography, I think the following paragraph helps spell it out: "Zittrain's research includes digital property, privacy, and speech, and the role played by private "middlepeople" in Internet architecture. He has a strong interest in creative, useful, and unobtrusive ways to deploy technology in the classroom." He's also got a brilliant mind, is never boring, and seems genuinely interested in the future of the Internet becoming something close to Vint Cerf's vision for what it should be. The most critical advisory role I would see Jonathan playing is: Helping us set priorities with our mission and constituency of end-users in mind. I have spoken to Jonathan ahead of time about greater involvement in ICANN matters, of course, and he said he would be interested. The US loves to talk about the value of multistakeholderism -- in fact today an announcement was posted on the NTIA website pointing to a joint statement on the part of US Ambassador David A. Gross and Assistant Secretary John M. R. Kneuer that extolled this value -- see http://www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/press/2007/IGF_110807.html ...however, actions speak louder than words. in the .us namespace we used to have a multistakeholder .us Policy Council; members included: Consumer Project on Technology American Library Association American Intellectual Property Law Association U.S. Chamber of Commerce registrar and registry representatives In the new contract just awarded to NeuStar to manage the .us space, the multistakeholder .us Policy Council has been replaced by a blog, a message board and an RSS feed. see http://www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/domainname/usca/usTLD2007_17_L_Outreach.pdf The contract was awarded without a public comment process, and the notion of multistakeholder policy development has been jettisoned in favor of single-stakeholder policy declarations, namely policy by US Government fiat. Meeting Recordings from LA Meeting

Dear Community: I've just posted the meeting recordings for several At-Large meetings during the LA ICANN Meeting. The transcriptions have been requested and will be posted once they are available; the summary minutes are in the final stages of preparation before they are also posted. With the exception of the RAA Workshop, they are available in three languages: English, Spanish, and French. Note that I have not checked them all, but in some cases it appears that the sound recordist didn't change the channel when participants were speaking in French and Spanish, so the recording is of those languages rather than the English interpretation of them. The transcriptions should correct for this - my apologies for this; I will reinforce to the meetings staff for the New Delhi meeting the importance of capturing a faithful recording of each language.
