Dear Colleagues, having attended a local call for the UK community, I found out about ccNSO sessions happening this week and which could be of interest, as they touch on some of the work that At-Large has focussed on in recent years. ccTLD News Session #1 ** *26 May 2021 | 13:00-14:30 UTC* *CCTLDS & SECURITY: REGULATORY DEMANDS* Which regulatory demands in the security-realm impact ccTLD operations? How do ccTLDs respond? Join us for the first ccTLD News Session and listen to representatives from ccTLD Managers across the globe. and ccTLD News Session #2 *27 May 2021 | 05:00-06:30 UTC* *DNS ABUSE: THE CCTLD EXPERIENCE* Which efforts to combat DNS Abuse do ccTLD Managers from various regions adopt? What are the challenges they are facing? Participate in the second ccTLD News Session and learn about best practices and trends. I believe that this 2nd session is of particular interest, as some ccTLD operators are implementing policies against DNS abuse that go way further than any policy mandated by ICANN for gTLDs. Often ccTLDs have to abide by strict operational rules set by their government - so this is likely to be an interesting session! As a bonus, it's going to include our friend and colleague Javier Rúa-Jovet. ICANN Community Focus: The Netherlands, Youth, and Internet Governance Wednesday, 2 June 2021, 11:30 – 12:30 UTC The session will highlight the activities of younger Dutch Internet community members, telling their story of how they got involved, what they've done, and where they are now. Speakers: Nadia Tjahja, United Nations University – CRIS Gül Akcaova, SURF.NL Auke Pals, GÉANT Discussants: Maarten Simon, SIDN Gergana Petrova and Chris Buckridge, RIPE NCC Ergys Ramaj and Siranush Vardanyan, ICANN Moderator: Chris Mondini, ICANN The session will highlight younger Dutch Internet community members, telling us how they got involved in Internet governance and Internet policy, what they've done, and where they are now. Regarding ICANN's allocation of resources in support of end-user polling by and for ALAC <https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=151847258&preview=…> : To Heidi who advanced this request <https://community.icann.org/display/projfinadhocws/ALAC+-+FY22+Additional+B…> within ICANN, and to all who had a part of creating it, a heartfelt and personal thank you. I am extremely heartened by the allocation of funds for survey-based research to support and drive ALAC's ongoing work. Some of you may have seen my participation in At-Large mailing lists complaining about the lack of such resources, and now here they are. I have no idea whether my contributions played any role in development of this formal request of which I was not aware, but regardless I am sincerely appreciative of the significant effort that I know has gone into creating and advancing the request. So now is the time to deliver, now that the opportunity is at hand. I have no idea what kind of sub-group and/or what ALAC support staff will be tasked to turn this approval into a detailed plan; I am at the service of whatever mechanism will be used. Let me remind once again that while other stakeholders - including, but not limited to, contracted parties - do “volunteer” activities as part of their paid job, plain Internet users do not have the time and resources for participating to the ICANN processes at the comparable level. Hence helping to vehicle the users’ voice in a more accurate way is not optional, but a basic requirement for the good functioning of the multi-stakeholder model. In simple words, while I like very much the ideas of myself and other fellow At-Large volunteers - and I believe that we are always right :-) - I do not mind being able to verify in the field that what we say and do is in line with the large Internet user community, including the “not yet Internet users”, the vast majority of which has never even heard of ICANN - not to even mention ALAC - and whose voice would be absent unless we proactively search for it. Given the amount of the funding at play we can't come close to "everywhere" so we need to work on what limited (but still random) scope will best provide useful analysis. IMO this proposal is more than just a funded project; its approval would be an unprecedented level of confidence in At-Large's ability to engage in its own research, ask its own questions, and perform its own analysis. Personally I have always felt that this is the only form of "outreach" that actually helps ALAC to perform its bylaw mandate. If granted it will be vital to deliver something useful, even if limited in scope to accommodate the resources available. To everyone who is interested in contributing meaningfully to this effort -- assuming it is approved -- please start giving some thought to the strategy of what we want from this. Once there is consensus on that I think the questions will flow naturally. Also consider that, depending on what we want from this effort, some of the raw research may already exist and be available for purchase.
