Ars Technica : A Chrome feature is creating enormous load on global root DNS servers

The Chromium browser—open source, upstream parent to both Google Chrome and the new Microsoft Edge—is getting some serious negative attention for a well-intentioned feature that checks to see if a user's ISP is "hijacking" non-existent domain results. The Intranet Redirect Detector <https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1090985>, which makes spurious queries for random "domains" statistically unlikely to exist, is responsible for roughly half of the total traffic the world's root DNS servers receive. Verisign engineer Matt Thomas wrote a lengthy APNIC blog post <https://blog.apnic.net/2020/08/21/chromiums-impact-on-root-dns-traffic/> outlining the problem and defining its scope. Dear At-Large and All, The *Engagement Session with the IANA Naming Function Review Team (IFRT)* at ICANN69 has been scheduled for 22 October from 7:00-8:00 UTC. *IMPORTANT*: In order to access the ICANN69 schedule, you must first register for ICANN69 here: https://events.icann.org/icann69-agm/registration. Once you have registered, you will be able to access the schedule here: https://69.schedule.icann.org/, sign-up for the sessions of interest and create your agenda. Please note that participation links will only be published one day prior to the sessions for security purposes. *How to Export the Schedule:* If you would like to export your agenda to your personal calendaring tool, sign in on your desktop computer and complete the following steps: - Once signed in > Click on *"Schedule"* tab > *"Full Agenda"* or *"My Agenda"*. - Select *"Export"* > *"Export Full Agenda (ics)"* or *"Export My Agenda (ics)"*. - A file download will begin and save as *"meetings.ics"*. - Find the downloaded file> Right click on the file, select *"Open-as"* > Select the calendar program you wish to save these meetings to. - Once the calendar file opens, click *"Save"*. A few suggestions for when you're on camera in ZOOM!

Folks, Glad we're getting started with our meetings. I think we're off to a strong start so thank you for everyone involved. I noticed a couple of things that I thought I would mention to improve your camera feed on Zoom. 1. Align your camera. Often people are using the camera on their laptop to broadcast themselves but when you do this, you need to be careful. The best angle for the laptop screen for reading might NOT be the best angle for you on camera. Often, when the lid is too far back, you will be too low on camera. Something to check. You can go into Video Settings on Zoom to see how you look on camera. 2. Use a Green Screen While clever, the virtual background feature of Zoom is not very good and can be quite distracting when people are seeing parts of you disappear and reappear on camera. IF you have a green screen, the virtual backgrounds will look MUCH better! If you do not have a green screen, I my strong recommendation is not to use a virtual background. I never thought I would write these words but follow Sébastien's example! He has simply created a nice space in his office, cleaned it up a bit, put up a sign, made it bright and it looks MUCH better than disappearing and reappearing. [A person standing in front of a computer Description automatically generated] If you really MUST use the virtual background feature, remember that it is using the difference in depth in your scene to determine what to include and not include. If possible, sit with a plain wall behind you, without a lot of extra stuff to confuse the camera and try to stay fairly still, so you remain the same distance to the camera. 1. Face the light. You'll notice also in Sébastien's example that he has a nice soft light on his face. When you have the brighter light behind you, you become a silhouette. Try to face a northern window or turn a light on in front of you, perhaps directing it at the wall in front of you if you're facing a wall. Ideally, the brightest source of light in you scene is in front of you and bigger than your head. Just some thoughts I wanted to share with all of you who might be "on camera" in the next couple of weeks. Once again, great start! IANA Function Review Team (IFRT) current progress

Dear At-Large and all, IFRT's Initial Report is now up for Public Comment at: https://www.icann.org/public-comments/ifr-initial-report-2020-10-08-en The Public Comment will end on 02 December 2020. Everybody is encouraged to review it and submit a comment. During ICANN69, there will be a public session about the IFRT’s work on Thursday, 22 October 2020 at 07:00 UTC. Session information: https://community.icann.org/display/ifr/IANA+Naming+Function+Review If you are able to attend, please register for ICANN69 first. Then click on this session link and in the upper left hand corner, under the session title, you can choose ADD TO CALENDAR. After the Public Comment period a Comment Report will gather all the comments and group them. Then the IFRT will review the comments, determine if there are any appropriate edits to the Report, and add a section to the report regarding the comments collected. There will be no IFRT meetings during October and November, as the Public Comment does not end until 02 Dec. The Public Comment and ICANN69 Session have been posted on the IFR wiki <https://community.icann.org/display/ifr/IANA+Naming+Function+Review>.
