Hi all, There will be AP* (star) meeting in Christchurch to be held on Aug 24, and I was asked to give a short presentation on the status of APRALO. Dear IGF Secretariat, After consulting with my colleagues at the APRALO (Asia-Pacific Regional At-Large Organization), I'm pleased to confirm that we are willing to join the main session workshop, if possible, to access multilingual translation, webcasting and other audience-facilitating services in the main conference room. We understand that our workshop may not maintain the original identify once fit in the main session. After reading the other similar proposals, we find that No. 21-23 might contain the similar theme with ours. As far as the end-users' prospective can be preserved, we are open to merge with any or all of them, in particular, the one proposed by the ISOC (No. 23). We are looking forward to hearing from you and making adjustment to our proposal accordingly. user_s summit 2009 and icann committment to be user oriented

All, We finally made it and will be able to organize a userŽs summit in Mexico, March 2009! I think it would be great if we could make sure, that the userŽs summit will not be something seperated from the ICANN Meeting. Instead, ICANN should show its committment to strengthen its bottom up structure and be user oriented in all its policies. For the public discussion my proposal is, to approach all icann bodies - such as the board, various committees, the advisory councils, the ICANN supporting organisations and their constituencies as well as icann staff. We should ask them - throughout the whole icann meetings whenever they give a public presentations - to explain what the respective issues/ policy proposals mean for the internet end-user. I think implementing such a procedure would be a great step forward. Best greetings and many thanks to all, who have been working very hard to make the summit possible. Annette

Key players in the ICT world recognize this and are coming together to launch a new grants program for the Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology (ICT) community. The Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) is a joint initiative between the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Internet Society (ISOC), and the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), aimed at stimulating creative solutions to ICT development needs in the Asia Pacific region. ISIF provides grants of up to US$30,000 per project to help advance local and regional projects aimed at introducing, improving, and applying Internet and other digital communications technologies for the benefit of Asia-Pacific users and communities. APNIC Director General Paul Wilson states, "Innovative projects, such as the ones funded by ISIF, are a significant driver to Internet and technology growth in our region. APNIC encourages members of the Asia Pacific ICT community to submit their projects for consideration." "ISOC believes that the Internet can contribute to a better quality of life for people all over the world," says ISOC President and CEO Lynn St. Amour. "ISIF helps ensure that local knowledge and experience is directed at tapping the potential of ICTs to address real-world problems with creative, innovative solutions." "In Asia Pacific the Internet and the Mobile phone development are on different trajectories. We hope the ISIF research fund can help illuminate and address the new 'digital divergence' in our region", says Richard Fuchs, chair of the ISIF Grants Committee and Regional Director at IDRC, Southeast and East Asia. Project proposals from Asia-Pacific based public or private sector organisations, university or research and development institutions, and non-government organisations will be considered. Applications must be aligned with ISIF program objectives, selection criteria and administrative guidelines. Individuals are not eligible for grants. The ISIF grant round for 2008 is now open and applications are due 1 September 2008. A total of US$375,000 will be available for grants in 2008. Grants will be made on a competitive basis and successful applicants will be required to make project details, outcomes and findings publicly available. Seoul Korea 16th June 2008 - The Internet technical community today issues a memorandum to Governments, civil society and the private sector to ensure that human capacities are enhanced or enabled through creativity, confidence and that the convergence of Internet technology is preserved. Members of the Internet technical community have gathered from all across the globe to share knowledge and perspective on how best to safeguard Internet development and innovation with attendees of the OECD Ministerial. As OECD ministers outline a framework for government actions over the next decade, the Internet technical community urges that tomorrow's policies and practices must grow from shared vision, developed as the Internet grows and continues to spur economic and social development around the world. A multi-stakeholder model of decision making and a full commitment to adopting emerging technologies and standards are critical for long- term Internet policy development. Additionally, the memorandum calls for member states to: * Fuel creativity by recognising that the open and decentralised nature of the Internet is fundamental for continued innovation and creativity * Build confidence by recognising that Internet users' confidence in the stability, reliability and security of the Internet is essential to the success of the future global economy * Maximise the benefit from convergence by ensuring that neither government regulation nor the economic power of monopolies delays or prevents growth of the Internet by limiting the provision of new, better, cheaper, faster or more innovative Internet-related services. The open and transparent nature of Internet policy and technology development processes is intrinsic to the ongoing success of the Internet. The memorandum urges OECD member states to support the development and adoption of emerging technologies and standards to assist with the evolution of the Internet, including preparation for and uptake of IPv6 protocol. In case you did not get this Email today, please find below the Email sent by the At-Large Staff Dear All: You will have received At-Large Staff¹s (Frederic Teboul¹s) recent email asking some questions of you as a member of the At-Large community and some of you have already replied. As there have been a few questions about the message, we would like to provide some additional information. Firstly, we want to emphasize that this effort is meant to be a collaborative process we are asking you to provide information so that we can combine your answers with others in the At-Large community and create a summary of the community¹s views on how its involvement in ICANN can be better supported. We will share the aggregated input with you, along with an analysis of the trends that we see, and our thoughts on how we might collectively Staff and community - respond to the Regional At-Large Organizations¹ needs to support greater involvement in ICANN. After community discussion and concurrence, an Action Plan will be publicly posted and implemented. To be clear, the questions you have been asked to respond to relate only to the At-Large community and its involvement in ICANN. To avoid any confusion, we are re-stating the questions below, and would appreciate receiving your thoughts. This exercise is part of Staff's ongoing effort to better serve the At-Large community. It is not related to the completely separate and independent ³ALAC Review² currently being conducted under the auspices of the Board as part of their process for reviewing all ICANN structures. We know you are all busy and that you volunteer for your At-Large group and ICANN in your spare time. On reflection, we therefore think the original deadline was overly ambitious. It would be a great help if we could get a good set of responses on or before the end of the Paris ICANN meeting (25th June). This will allow us to move on to the next steps in the process mentioned above in due course. That said, of course the kind of input we seek in this short questionnaire is always welcome we are always glad to hear your thoughts, concerns and ideas.
