Submit your comments for consideration of ALAC/At-Large objections to new gTLD applications by January 16 2012

Dear All, ICANN has formally announced that the objection period whereby objections to new gTLD applications and applied for strings can be filed has been extended to March 13 2013. The At-Large new gTLD Review Group (gTLD RG ; https://community.icann.org/x/u7-bAQ) is seeking comments from the ICANN's At-Large community (At-Large) on the new gTLD applications and applied for strings received by ICANN for its New gTLD program (http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/about) Such At-Large comments will be used by the gTLD RG to decide whether to draft a formal objection statement to a gTLD application on limited public interest or community grounds for RALO's consideration and ALAC's during the Objection Period as part of ICANN's Objection and Dispute Resolution Process. All At-Large comments received will be kept at the At-Large new gTLD Applications Dashboard at http://bit.ly/newgtld For comments to be considered by the gTLD RG for drafting a formal objection statement on limited public interest or community grounds for RALO's and ALAC's consideration, such comments must be submitted by January 16 2012. Beijing and Policy Discussion - and Verisign

Hi Fouad - and others Actually, the more immediate issue for APRALO - and ALAC (and ICANN for that matter) - and maybe something to put upfront in the Multi stakeholder discussion - is the letter from Verisign to ICANN that it will not cooperate with the Compliance audit of registries in relation to the .net registry. See http://www.icann.org/en/news/correspondence/kane-to-serad-et-al-08jan13-en Arguably, since this is only about Verisign's agreement in relation to the .net registry, all is not lost since, arguably, the registries handling .net domain names for Verisign are covered by the RAA (as opposed to the ICANN-Verisign contract on .net) so the Whois data held should be accurate as required under the RAA ( but then we have already drawn attention to the deficiencies in that contract - specifically clause 3.7.8) I haven't had time to go through the .net contract in detail, but I think we can be reasonably sure that Verisign lawyers have been through in great detail and probably are right. So the big question is what Verisign's refusal to comply with the Compliance audit (although they do say they are happy to cooperate) means for Whois data accuracy. Happy reading Holly

Thank you all for the warm welcome. ISOC-PH is honored to be a part of ICANN's At-Large community and looks forward to engaging and actively working with other community members globally. Aside from our tech/educ events (often in coordination with the PH government agencies and other international organizations such as APNIC), ISOC-PH has been engaged in private consultations regarding our CyberCrime Law and is a member of the Philippine (ICTO-NTC) working group on WCIT, where we hope to continue to make a positive contribution to national ICT policy and governance. We eagerly anticipate learning from and sharing with other ALSes and community members. IMHO, I would actually support the proposal to keep WCIT out of discussions. Its been over discussed. The real threat posed in our part of the world is the blocking of Internet content in the name of religion, national security, war on terror, shutdown of Mobile and Cellular Internet and Services to prevent terrorism where we have had nearly a week of such mobile blocking during the past year across Pakistan. WCIT proposals, signatories and implications do not directly affect present policy issues, they may in the far future but at the moment the issues are very different. We need a divergence away from the G8 or developed west point of view on Internet related issues. We have to discuss the strategy for ICANN and its implications for the Middle East, South Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Australiasia etc. My reason sometimes for staying silent during such threads is the fact that we tend to stay away from the real issues asserting a self-perceived point of view without a real baseline from our stakeholder countries and regions. Thats also where outreach collapses and the opportunity to engage and contribute is reduced. We need to hear from stakeholders what the issues area instead of telling them what the issues should be. Hello everyone, The APRALO Beijing Events Organizing Committee seeks your input on possible topics for a Multistakeholder Policy Roundtable in conjunction with the April 2013 ICANN Meeting in Beijing. The criteria for the policy topics are as follows: (1) highly relevant and important to the region and ICANN; (2) require multistakeholder engagement to address. For each topic proposed, please provide recommendations on relevant discussion leaders. These discussion leaders should be knowledgeable about the topic/s and respected regionally or globally. We would like to have discussion leaders from a broad range of stakeholder groups (i.e., government and inter-governmental, business, non-profit/NGO, and end user). Possible topics include: Implications of the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) for the Internet and the Multistakeholder Model; New gTLDs and Implications for the Asia-Pacific and Australasia Region; Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Implications for the Asia-Pacific and Australasia Region.
