Just two clarifications to the below: Firstly, there is a further qualification for ALAC members: that the members selected must be nationals, or residents, of different countries in the region. Of course, many candidates from a single country would be welcomed - but only one from each could actually be seated. This comes from the ICANN Bylaws if you are wondering. Secondly, the election and seating of ALAC representatives is dependent not upon the adoption of Operating Principles, but on the agreement of the contents of the MoU with ICANN. Whilst I'm sure from the discussions here that the region does want to have Operating Principles, this is not strictly speaking necessary to elect ALAC representatives. At-Large EURALO 2007 Election Results

Dear All: I'm pleased to report the results of the 2007 EURALO Elections. ALAC COMMITTEE: 2-year Term: CRETU, Veronica 1-year Term: BACHOLLET, Sebastian EURALO BOARD Number of Seats Chosen: All Candidates (from a selection by ballot of 5, 7, 9, or all candidates) Members Elected (in order of election, taking into account Bylaw requirement of nationality diversity with respect to first 5 seats) HOFMANN, Jeannette LUDWIG, Wolf BERTOLA, Vittorio DE QUITO, Paco MILOSHEVIC, Desiree BRUCH, Christophe BANKS, Karen DRAKE, Bill VANSNICK, Rudi Whilst Sebastian Bachollet and Veronica Cretu were also candidates for board seats, the elections process agreed on was that those elected to ALAC seats would not also occupy board seats, though they would be able to attend board meetings. For those who wish to review the details of the election, and to ensure independent verification of the results published, the voting system provides a URL as follows: http://www.bigpulse.com/pollresults?code=YZMs83SWNAgmq75TMXUb The procedures related to the election can be found at: https://st.icann.org/euralo/index.cgi?euralo_elections_2007 Since one-half of the EURALO board was to be elected every year, as per the Bylaws for the region adopted in Lisbon, it was submitted for consideration by the ICANN staff that the top 1/2 (rounded to the nearest whole number) would serve a 2-year term, and the bottom 1/2 a 1-year term. Given the number of members of the board, that procedure would not resolve whether the top 4, or 5, would be serving 2-years. Perhaps the region will allow the board, in its first meeting, to decide this question. I deleted the forwarder which at one time forwarded emails between the regional lists. Unfortunately I didn't delete all parts of this, and so the removal notifications flowed through the lists. What should we do if a domain fails ?

To follow up to Danny's recent message and to the one I sent out about .travel, it seems likely that the sponsor for .travel will go bust within the next month. Unlike registerfly, there's no problem of losing the data, since Neustar runs the day to day operations. The question is what should happen to a domain that dies. Should it just wind up, no new registrations, the existing ones end when they end? (That may take up to ten years, the maximum registration period.) Presumably when Tralliance goes, ICANN will look for a new sponsor. What if no new sponsor appears? Given what a dud .travel is, that's quite possible. Should ICANN pay Neustar or someone to keep it going anyway? Assuming that long-term stability is good, having .travel suddenly disappear would be bad. But having it live on as a zombie with nobody caring whether the domains continue to meet the sponsorship rules wouldn't be so great either. In the particular case of .travel, it's so small and obscure that it hardly matters to users what happens. But if ICANN carries through with plans to add lots more TLDs, someday a domain that's big enough to matter will fail, and it would be a good idea to have a plan in place beyond having the data not get lost. It will take me a while to meaningfully answer to this intense message. But in the meantime I would like to make sure that the text is available to read. I doubt that Eric has posting rights in the ALAC lists, so please see the text below. I do not have myself rights to the NA-RALO mailing list, but I believe it would be interesting reading over there. Maybe somebody will forward it. This thread has started as discussion on ALAC seats for the NA-RALO. I am not advocating any "voting rights" for the native american nations (how could I anyway?), but I would find appropriate if the NA-RALO could be inclusive enough to host the voice of a set of users that are different from others in the region. Maybe the formation of an ALS would be appropriate? This would be only up to Eric, should he think it would be worthed the time and effort. Maybe some feedback from the NA community could be useful. I have not forgotten the discussion we had about .naa. Some of the whereabouts are blurred (Was it at the IETF in Chicago, 1998? Or was it Minneapolis 1999, just before the Berlin ICANN meeting? Was the third man ;>) in the discussion Dave C.?), but the message is still loud and clear. I know we live in Internet times, but some changes, that are cultural rather than technological, take times of a different order of magnitude. But will eventually happen.
