A few suggestions for when you're on camera in ZOOM!

Folks, Glad we're getting started with our meetings. I think we're off to a strong start so thank you for everyone involved. I noticed a couple of things that I thought I would mention to improve your camera feed on Zoom. 1. Align your camera. Often people are using the camera on their laptop to broadcast themselves but when you do this, you need to be careful. The best angle for the laptop screen for reading might NOT be the best angle for you on camera. Often, when the lid is too far back, you will be too low on camera. Something to check. You can go into Video Settings on Zoom to see how you look on camera. 2. Use a Green Screen While clever, the virtual background feature of Zoom is not very good and can be quite distracting when people are seeing parts of you disappear and reappear on camera. IF you have a green screen, the virtual backgrounds will look MUCH better! If you do not have a green screen, I my strong recommendation is not to use a virtual background. I never thought I would write these words but follow Sébastien's example! He has simply created a nice space in his office, cleaned it up a bit, put up a sign, made it bright and it looks MUCH better than disappearing and reappearing. [A person standing in front of a computer Description automatically generated] If you really MUST use the virtual background feature, remember that it is using the difference in depth in your scene to determine what to include and not include. If possible, sit with a plain wall behind you, without a lot of extra stuff to confuse the camera and try to stay fairly still, so you remain the same distance to the camera. 1. Face the light. You'll notice also in Sébastien's example that he has a nice soft light on his face. When you have the brighter light behind you, you become a silhouette. Try to face a northern window or turn a light on in front of you, perhaps directing it at the wall in front of you if you're facing a wall. Ideally, the brightest source of light in you scene is in front of you and bigger than your head. Just some thoughts I wanted to share with all of you who might be "on camera" in the next couple of weeks. Once again, great start! IANA Function Review Team (IFRT) current progress

Dear At-Large and all, IFRT's Initial Report is now up for Public Comment at: https://www.icann.org/public-comments/ifr-initial-report-2020-10-08-en The Public Comment will end on 02 December 2020. Everybody is encouraged to review it and submit a comment. During ICANN69, there will be a public session about the IFRT’s work on Thursday, 22 October 2020 at 07:00 UTC. Session information: https://community.icann.org/display/ifr/IANA+Naming+Function+Review If you are able to attend, please register for ICANN69 first. Then click on this session link and in the upper left hand corner, under the session title, you can choose ADD TO CALENDAR. After the Public Comment period a Comment Report will gather all the comments and group them. Then the IFRT will review the comments, determine if there are any appropriate edits to the Report, and add a section to the report regarding the comments collected. There will be no IFRT meetings during October and November, as the Public Comment does not end until 02 Dec. The Public Comment and ICANN69 Session have been posted on the IFR wiki <https://community.icann.org/display/ifr/IANA+Naming+Function+Review>. Public meeting survey

Dear At-Large In the next week or so, you will get a survey that will ask for your opinion about ICANN's public meetings both face to face and virtual. The Chairs of the Supporting Organisations (CCNSO, GNSO and ASO) and Advisory Committees (ALAC, SSAC, GAC, RSSAC) are currently being asked for their input into the development of the survey. In At-Large the ALT+ will also have contributed. At the conclusion of the survey collection, on 9 November, the SOAC Chairs will work together on developing a consolidated response from all the communities and a final report that will then go to the Board in January. >From then on, depending on the responses of the different communities, it will be interesting to see just how people view current face-to-face and virtual meetings, and what our future meetings might possibly look like. Please participate when this survey arrives in your mailbox around the 9th or 10th October. We need to have our say about how we can work more effectively as At-Large and as ICANN. Regards Maureen

This has been made even more urgent by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am sure you would agree that it is time to move on from what has been largely an uncoordinated and technical debate spread across various fora, and initiate global stakeholder cooperation that will have a positive impact on economic and social well-being through helping digital technologies to transform everybody’s daily lives. As you may know, the UN Internet Governance Forum is establishing a new Dynamic Coalition on Internet Standards, Security and Safety (DC-ISSS) with the aim of achieving this objective and I am now writing as the leader of this initiative to invite you as a leading expert to join this important multi-stakeholder coalition. The intended outcomes of the DC-ISSS will be recommendations for actions by key policymakers and decision-takers that will enable security-related Internet standards and best practices to be deployed more rapidly and with greater determination and commitment. It has to stop to be a, primarily, technical debate, to be changed into a digital healthcare topic. As a first step, the coalition needs to prioritise its work and finalise its work plan. A preparatory session for this purpose will be held during the upcoming IGF 2020 on Wednesday 4 November at 09.40 – 11.10 CET. A short questionnaire has been drawn up to help with this process.
