Dear APRALO colleagues, First of all, congratulations with the starting of the new education year, I hope this year will bring more development and more inclusive communication among ourselves for the prosperity of At Large community. Secondly, there are several action items, discussed during our last call, which I would like all of you participate actively and bring your contribution. Those who participated in our monthly call on August 27 may already know about this, but I would like to make sure that all ALSs are aware. 1. APRALO Rules of Procedure: APRALO has an intention to form a Working Group (WG) to review current APRALO Rules of Procedure (ROPs) see: https://community.icann.org/display/APRALO/RALO+Organising+Documents so they are in line with the revised ALAC Rules of Procedure; see https://community.icann.org/display/atlarge/Rules+of+Procedure. We have asked for volunteers for this WG and Cheryl Langdon-Orr already volunteered to be a member of this group. We are asking for more volunteers to work in this group to revise the ROPs and come up with suggestions. Please, those who would like to volunteer, send your names via our mailing list. The NomCom is charged with recruiting and selecting a portion of ICANN's leadership. The NomCom is mandated to ensure that overall ICANN's leadership is diverse in geography, culture, skills, experience, and perspective. The basic criteria is that selectees are people of integrity, objectivity and sound judgment, can support decision-making within groups, can work effectively in English, have an understanding of ICANN's mission and operation, are committed to its success, experienced in world affairs, contribute to cultural, professional and geographic expertise, and can work long and hard as volunteers in the global public trust. Balancing Confidentiality with Transparency Discussing the 2013 Nominating Committee results, Yrjö Länsipuro, the Chair of the 2013 NomCom, shared the following: I am very happy to report that the 2013 NomCom reached a unanimous decision about the entire slate of selectees at our meeting in Durban, South Africa, immediately after the 47th ICANN meeting in that city. There were 110 candidates, a record number reached only once before (2003). This number reflects a growing interest for ICANN leadership positions, and also the strong outreach efforts by the 2013 NomCom. I want to thank all candidates and encourage those whom we could not select this time, to keep up their interest in ICANN. The 2013 NomCom was committed to striking a new balance between the imperative for confidentiality and protecting the privacy of the candidates, with the need to ensure that the NomCom processes are up to ICANN standards of openness and transparency. Accordingly, while maintaining strict confidentiality of candidate specific information, we held NomCom meetings in Beijing and Durban that were open to all community members, both in person and online. We also issued monthly progress report cards of our work to all constituencies and stakeholder groups represented on the committee. Last but not least, I want to thank all NomCom members, and ICANN staff supporting the NomCom, for their commitment to a year of very hard work and carrying it through with persistence, in a cooperative, constructive and collegial spirit. Regional Breakdown As noted above, the 2013 NomCom received 110 Statements of Interest from candidates all over the world (27 female and 83 male), during its open nomination period from 7 November 2012 to 15 May 2013. Hi Everyone This is my report for the August APRALO meeting, which I had to miss, but which Siranush agreed to chair - and I'm sure did a terrific job. Some reminders: we are encouraging all of you to attend the calls as a first. You should also be checking whether the details on the website for your organisation are correct and complete. Cheryl would like some volunteers for the WG on the APRALO procedures, and finally, think about a policy issue that we should have a webinar on. And staff: please post this as my August report Thanks Holly APRALO MONTHLY REPORT: August 2013 ALSs The following three orgnisations have been formally accepted as ALSs · the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network · South Pacific Computer Society · Internet Society - Nepal Chapter APRALO Meeting in August: - Spotlight: Satish Babu give the first spotlight presentation on his ALS, the Computer Society of India, including its formation, structure and activities: see https://community.icann.org/display/APRALO/APRALO+ALSes+Spotlight. - Satish provided an update of the Meeting Strategy WG . The issues being considered include whether ICANN should continue with three global meetings a year, or two meetings a year plus another meeting in each region, selection of venues for meetings (including rotation and selection criteria) and suppot arrangements for travel and visas. The WG is due to report to the Board in September. - Policy Update: Olivier summarized the current issues before ICANN, including ALAC’s involvement in the policies, Participation of ALSs in policy discussions was encouraged - APRALO’s relationship with APNIC was discussed. - The meeting agreed that there should be a WG to look at APRALO procedures and their compliance with the revised ALAC Rules of Procedure (RoP). Action items on everyone (including staff) · be sure all of you are signed up to the APRALO and other mailing lists · on the APRALO ALS list, check that the entry for your ALS is correct - and let staff know if anything that needs correcting · volunteer to talk about your ALS to an APRALO meeting · consider volunteering for the WG on RoP · suggest policy topics for webinars
