Communication to the Board: At-Large Structure Applications Handling

Dear ALAC and community members: As decided by the ALAC in their meeting on 10th August 2007, as a consequence of decisions taken by the ALAC in their meetings in San Juan, the Board of ICANN is to be formally requested to acknowledge certain changes to the way in which ALS applications are to be handled, and to acknowledge the written guidelines established by the Committee which replace a previously unwritten understanding between committee members of how to interpret the Minimum Criteria and Bylaw requirements related to ALS Applications. In my view, these changes are an important landmark in the development of the community, providing amongst many other benefits and features: * A truly bottom-up-driven applications review process - where the existing ALS community in the region new applicants are from are able to provide advice to the ALAC about applicants; * A standard and open way to evaluate applications which is in conformity with the RALO MoUs (the previous process, since it predated the RALOs' formation, was not); * A flexible system which allows much larger volumes of applications to be handled without an overly burdensome load on volunteer time and energy being required to process them; * A process and guidelines that learn from the more than 100 previous applications and which should ensure that questions about specific aspects of applications are raised and answered earlier in the cycle of applications management; * Utilising a new and online interface, the applications handling process will be transferred into a forms-based database environment which will make review of applications easier on all parties - especially the volunteer community. IDN ccTLD: Agenda Item for Teleconf tomorrow (28 Aug)

Details of this including the APTLD position as a PDF are available at the link above, and I have copied the text of the request below for your convenience. Having thought long and hard about it the last few days, I have decided to withdraw from candidacy for the Nominating Committee and I hereby notify you to that effect. I will also inform my ALAC colleagues in due time that I do not wish to be considered for the position. I put up my name partly because I knew how hard it was in the past to find someone for the job, partly because I thought I had the over-all necessary qualifications, and also because it was a way of keeping in touch with ICANN. Now that I see enthusiasm for the position among newcomers, I should step aside and let new blood get into the system. I wish to thank all specially Cheryl and Bilal for their support. With the recent discussions of IDN implementation and the fact that we represent a proportion of the world that have plethora of various languages, i thought some of you may be interested in what Maori are proposing in NZ. We are asking for a bilingual DNS for .nz . I imagine that there will be other cultures doing the same thing in the future. We have heard from several ALS' that submitting all 3 names to ALAC is acceptable. This being a case of "rough consensus", I will ask our ALAC Reps to forward the names to ALAC late next week. I think it would be good if the 3 candidates can provide a short bio to our ALAC Reps to support their respective case for NomCom selection, and I would suggest you do this by say Wednesday 29th. Also, a reminder that we have a teleconference scheduled for Tuesday 28th - see https://st.icann.org/asiapac/index.cgi?28_august_2007 If you have any items you wish to put on the agenda, please do so at the link above and join the meeting to elaborate/discuss. I think and I thought each one is equally good including Siavash who is not a member himself, but nominated by a member of APRALO and seconded. I would appreciate if someone, either NIrmol himsel and/or someone who could understand what he wrote could explain that to me. I do not see any "bias" in my own message or any other so far except putting Siavash outside the candidate. I might be wrong, and I am open and willing to know if that's the case. Call for Participation: Trust and the Future of the Internet (ISOC)

Call for Participation: Trust and the Future of the Internet The Internet Society (ISOC) Board of Trustees is currently engaged in a discovery process to define a long term Major Strategic Initiative to ensure that the Internet of the future remains accessible to everyone. The Board believes that Trust is an essential component of all successful relationships and that an erosion of Trust: in individuals, networks, or computing platforms, will undermine the continued health and success of the Internet. The Board will meet in special session the first week October of 2007 for intensive study focused on the subject of trust within the context of network enabled relationships. As part of this process, the Board is hereby issuing a call for subject experts who can participate in the two day discussion. Topics of interest include: the changing nature of trust, security, privacy, control and protection of personal data, methods for establishing authenticity and providing assurance, management of threats, and dealing with unwanted traffic. Participants will be selected based on a short paper summarizing individual interests and qualifications as well as availability. The retreat will be held in Toronto, Ontario (CA) . Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by ISOC and participants should expect to arrive October 4th and depart on the 6th or 7th. Expressions of interest may be emailed to: oct07-retreat(a)elists.isoc.org <mailto:oct07-retreat@elists.isoc.org> and papers should not exceed three pages. Papers must received by August 24th, 2007 and the Program Committee will make their selections on or before September 7th, 2007. Subject experts will be allotted one hour for presentation on October 5th and will be included in the days round-table discussions. In order to facilitate open discussion, final presentation materials should be forwarded to ISOC no later than September 21st, 2007. We look forward to a lively and informative meeting on this important topic and encourage you to share this announcement with your communities of interest."
