[ALAC] Policy Areas Under Review - Presentation of Information

Dear Community: FYI, let there be no doubt that we are aware that the current way that information on policy reviews and processes is presented is very difficult to navigate. In particular, I have told the other staff that the point we need to get to with the presentation of this information is that the Individual Internet User community should be able to find, in 15 minutes, online: 1) What policies are being reviewed; 2) How the policy development processes work; 3) What the issues are (not requiring the reading, in the first instance, of large documents) 4) How to participate We are all aware that we are not at this point, and I am sure that new and candidate ALSes must find it difficult to get to the bottom of what is happening. At the same time, I know that there are many in the community who are particularly knowledgeable about where given areas of policy development are currently at. [ALAC] multiple copies of messages and other issues...

two quick comments: First, I'm getting various multiple copies of the messages posted to the list. 2-4 copies at times. it is a bit much, and would appreciate any effort that helps fix the problem. Second, I'd like for the discussion to move from general comments and process related items to focused contributions on key policy issues open for comment. ALAC Review (starting this month), ALAC 07 budget, WHOIS, Domain name tasting come immediately to mind. As well, would be great to get comments from the intl. ALS community on the RALO formation document being drafted by those in north America. I agree with Luc that atlarge is more descriptive than alac for a list where we invite the public to discuss ICANN issues with ALAC members and carry out ALAC's business. Can I suggest that we create a new list, atlarge, open subscription and invite everyone on all the ALAC's lists to subscribe to it? When everyone from the ALAC committee is there, we can then address as a second step whether to close the ALAC-only list and keep all conversation with the atlarge. First off, thanks very much to Nick for finally helping us to get ALAC communications under our control and for tracking down ALS contacts to add to lists. Now, though, we have an embarrassment of riches -- so many lists that it's hard to know where to send and hard for the recipients to continue the discussion because they're fragmented among many one-way lists. I propose the following for the lists @atlarge-lists.icann.org: alac -- public archive, open membership, list for general ALAC business. Open for posting to any interested party (including the memberships of *-Discuss and *-ALS). alac-internal -- ALAC members only, no public archive, LIMITED use (e.g., what time's the conference call) regional lists -- at the option of regions' ALSs and individuals, for discussion of region-specific business. Publicly archived; open or closed at regions' option. For NA, I propose consolidation down to NA-Discuss, open membership. Finally, on the wikis, I propose using ICANNwiki exclusively, rather than the closed, publicly invisible Socialtext site. As the ALAC is supposed to represent the interests of the individual Internet users, we should be holding more conversations with them! [ALAC] Videoconferencing Software for At-Large Community being Evaluated

Dear Community: As some of you are aware, recently we have been making an effort to technologically 'connect' the community more effectively. The new list environment is a part of this, as well as some first-steps we took in Sao Paulo in providing simultaneous translation for At-Large meetings (and many others actually), and we also provided inbound access to ALAC meetings for two members of the committee via Skype since they were unable to attend the Sao Paulo meetings in person. Whilst this was much better than them not being able to participate at all, it was somewhat less than ideal. For the upcoming meeting of Asia-Pacific ALSes later this month, we will provide full videoconferencing access to the meetings for those ALS representatives unable to attend in person. The software we are using is a commercial product from Marratech (www.marratech.com) which was recommended to us by Rajnesh Singh of the Pacific Islands Chapter of ISOC, who are an actively participating ALS. (thanks again Raj!). The software is available for us to trial for the entire month of February. The information on how to connect up is below, and if you are interested, Marratech are offering a 10-minute introduction to the software using Marratech itself - just let us know at staff(a)alac.icann.org if you want to do this. The software is very easy to use but that doesn't make an introduction useless :) In particular we suggest that those who are planning to attend the APRALO meeting on February 28th via videoconference get a run-through of the system.
