Friends and Colleagues, I am pleased to inform you that the 3rd edition of the Arab IGF will take place in Beirut, Lebanon during November 26-27, 2014 at the Mövenpick Beirut Hotel <http://www.moevenpick-hotels.com/en/middle-east/lebanon/beirut/hotel-beirut /overview/?gclid=CK_q16Wq2b8CFennwgod6kgAEA> with a generous host from the UN-ESCWA. The theme for this years edition is An Arab Vision for the Development of the Future Internet. The official announcement in Arabic can be found at http://beta.igfarab.org/GetNews.jsp?news_ID=25. There are plans for a day-0 on November 25 where an introduction to Internet Governance will be covered, but this is pending availability of funds. Also, for those interested in organizing a workshop, there is a call for workshops at http://beta.igfarab.org/GetNews?news_ID=24. Again, the link is in Arabic. The deadline for workshop calls is August 20, 2014. The registration for the 3rd Arab IGF will open in mid-September right after the 7th Arab IGF MAG meeting and the Global IGF both to convene in Istanbul. Regards, Towela Call for applications for Online Training: Internet Governance in Africa – an Introduction The NEPAD e-Africa Programme invites applications for an online training programme “Internet Governance in Africa – an Introduction” Course Content The course will cover fundamental aspects of Internet Governance and Internet policy including: · Actors and processes · Infrastructure and broadband policy · Cybersecurity · Privacy and Human Rights · Network neutrality · Management of domain names and IP addresses · Socio-economic and development aspects of the Internet and Internet Governance The course will also offer case studies and practical examples from Africa and participants will be encouraged to contextualize their learning to their countries or regions. Target Audience The training is open to a wide variety of stakeholders including: · Government officials · Officials from regional and sub-regional institutions · Parliamentary representatives · Civil society activists and advocates · Students, academics and researchers · Journalists Eligibility Applicants must meet the following requirements: · Citizen of a member state of the African Union · Able to read, write and converse in English · Have reliable Internet access Applicants with an undergraduate degree may have an added advantage. Preference will be given to individuals living and working in Africa. Mode of Delivery The course will be delivered in English and will be conducted online using a mixture of facilitator-led sessions and self-directed learning. Participants should expect to spend at least 8 hours per week on the course. The course will be delivered over an 8-week period. Chers Membres d¹AFRALO, Au nom des dirigeants d¹AFRALO, nous avons le plaisir de vous informer que nous allons procéder aux élections pour pourvoir les deux postes suivants pour la période 2014-2016 : * Représentant d¹AFRALO à ALAC (pour une durée de 2 ans) * Secrétaire d¹AFRALO (pour une durée de 2 ans) La période de nomination commencera le lundi 21 Juillet et finira le Dimanche 03 août 2014. Le 8 Août est la date limite pour l¹acceptation des nominations par les nominés. S¹il y¹a plus d¹un candidat à un poste, des élections seront organisées du 18 août à 24 août 2014. Tout membre d¹AFRALO peut nominer un autre membre ou se nominer lui même. Les nouveaux sélectionnés pour les postes susmentionnés prendront leurs fonctions à la clôture la 51ème réunion de Los Angles prévue du 12 au 17 Octobre 2014. Nous vous prions d¹envoyer vos nominations sur le mailing list avec copie au président d¹AFRALO et au staff. Hi Tijani, Thank you for initiating this important discussion. I read the document and this is what I think : · * Individual membership* I think we can create an AFRALO individual ALS to allow individual members to join. The question is how. This ALS should be regional and may be we can ask Afrinic to host it. II am just thinking loud... · *Vote weighting* One active ALS, one vote? Of course we will have to define "active" with the Metrics of performance · *Metrics of performance* ALAC has its metrics of performance and we can go from there and set up a small working group to suggest a draft · *Decertification* This should derive from the Metrics of performance and may also be a consequence of a "faute lourde" to be defined. May be we should look at the quorum for meetings too as we are above 30 ALS now. 7 members seem to little to take a decision in a meeting / General Assembly. I think we should maintain 1/3 of the total members as a threshold and not give a fix number as the number of ALS will keep growing...
