ALS Mobilization Plan

As many of you know, we are in the midst of implementing the At-Large Review. A key part of this is using our ALS infrastructure to identify new active ICANN policy-oriented volunteers. To do this, we will need much better communications with ALSes and their members. Much work was done by the ALS Criteria and Expectations Taskforce several years ago and the proposals it made were the basis for the At-Large Review proposals. It is now time to finalize and enhance those proposals and have them implemented. You can find the current draft ALS Mobilization Plan at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ex6BjDrJjESxNZSbTYLbKswVsDvpaEvt/edit#h… . We are looking for people with a strong knowledge of ICANN At-Large and ALSes to refine this plan for approval by the ALAC. This will be a relatively short-term project, but it is important to have active participation from all RALOs. Dear Colleagues and friends, I am constrained to bring the attention of everyone to the myriad of road-blocks and frustrations currently confronting African delegates to ATLAS 3, and I am afraid, about 80% may not make it to Montreal after all. No thanks to the Canadian Embassy that, has not only refused their visas applications but also giving very spurious and insulting excuses for such wanton refusalS. For example, delegates that have a track history of previous trips abroad with valid USA, UK and even Japan visas are being told, they may not leave Canada at the end of the conference!!! That is the worst excuse I have heard all my life. If I could not remain in the USA, or Japan, UK and Europe, what is so special about Canada to keep me away from returning? It must be recalled that we collectively put up and appeal to ICANN to be aware of the notoriety of the Canadian Embassies in African, that they will take our monies and refused to grant a genuine visa application. It is my view that ICANN Secretariat please intervenes because its just one month away to Montreal. It will be such a shame if more than half of the accredited delegates are absent after all the preparations and efforts put into the planning and selections. And it should also be the responsibility of the AFRALO leadership to lead on this struggle. The fact that, they all have free rides to travel anywhere for ICANN events should not becloud their responsibilities to us-members from AFRALO. I hope ALAC leadership should provide the oversight function here. Introduction of Alperen (Alp) Eken, At-Large Policy Coordinator - Temporary Assignment

Dear All, I am very pleased to be able to announce that Alperen (Alp) Eken, At-Large Policy Coordinator, will be supporting the work of the At-Large community in their efforts to increase the effective engagement of At-Large Structures and Individuals on a part time, temporary basis. Alp previously worked at ICANN as a Compliance Analyst and at QNB Finansbank as a Process Engineer. In addition to his work, Alp is one of the Co-Founders and previous Chairperson of the Co-Opinion Network which is a non-profit, policy-oriented international youth network. He chaired and organized numerous summits, workshops and roundtables in Turkey, Lebanon, Italy, Tunisia and Brussels aiming to render the contemporary world a youth-led and socially inclusive one. Alp is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington D.C., concentrating on Conflict Management and International Economics. Previously, he studied International Relations and Politics at Bogazici University, Istanbul. Alp speaks English, Turkish and German. Alp will be in Montreal for ATLAS III. The selected candidate will serve a 3-year term starting at the end of ICANN69 (2020 Annual General Meeting - AGM). Background Seat number 15 of the ICANN Board of Directors is dedicated to a member selected by the At-Large community. This seat is currently occupied by León Sánchez, who assumed the position at the end of ICANN60 (2017 AGM). His 3-year term will be completed at the closing of ICANN69 (2020 AGM), and he will be eligible for re-appointment. Pursuant to Section 19 of the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) Rules of Procedure<https://community.icann.org/display/atlarge/Rules+of+Procedure?preview=/226…> (RoP), the At-Large community began the selection process for the next Board Director in September 2019, with the appointment of the Chairs and Members of the BCEC and the Board Member Selection Process Committee (BMSPC). The BCEC is responsible for outlining candidate requirements and expectations, calling for, identifying, and evaluating applications, and compiling the initial slate of candidates. The BMSPC oversees the entire selection process, including the development of the selection timeline and the election process. Both groups have regionally balanced membership and operate in accordance with a strict code of conduct and confidentiality where applicable. In accordance with the ALAC Rules of Procedure (RoP), Regional At-Large Organizations (RALOs) may petition to have a candidate added to the slate. The overall selection process will conclude by Wednesday, 22 April 2020. The successful applicant will be announced on or before that date.
