What does an inclusive Internet look like in Zambia? It starts in
classrooms — and grows through community.
The Internet Society Zambia Chapter has been at the forefront of promoting
Universal Acceptance (UA) in Africa. So far, they’ve hosted four in-person
events and three webinars, each playing a vital role in raising awareness
and building technical capacity around UA. These efforts are bridging the
digital divide and sparking important conversations about multilingual
access and digital inclusion in Zambia.
During Universal Acceptance Day 2025, the chapter organized a full-day
training with over 40 Computer Science students from TCNP College. What
began as a hands-on technical session evolved into a transformative space
for learning and leadership. Participants were introduced to UA concepts,
programming techniques, EAI (Email Address Internationalization), and
multilingual web systems.
UA Ambassador Chilufya Theresa Mulenga delivered an inspiring keynote
address, urging students to imagine a digital world where every language
and script is included. Tamara Bengesai facilitated engaging discussions on
multilingualism and its role in digital equity, while Chapter President
Levy Syanseke guided the audience through an insightful Internet Governance
review — showing how young people can participate in shaping the web’s
future.
The impact was immediate. By the end of the event, 15 new members had
joined the chapter, excited to contribute to a more inclusive Internet
ecosystem in Zambia.
📣 Don’t forget to register for our upcoming webinar on Wednesday 07 May
2025 : 🔗
https://icann.zoom.us/meeting/register/hQyoG33rTqagWVym4flqEQ#/registration
Stay tuned — we’ll be sharing more inspiring stories from At-Large
Structures (ALSs) across Africa who are championing UA in their own
communities. From rural training hubs to university tech labs, the UA
movement is growing — and you’ll want to be part of it.

Dear Staff,
Please accept this correspondence as confirmation of my acceptance of the nomination for the AFRALO NomCom representative position.
My candidacy is underscored by my prior engagement within the AFRALO community, including my tenure as Co-chair of the Outreach and Engagement (O&E) working group. Furthermore, my active participation in various working groups within the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the ICANN ecosystem.
My commitment to Internet Governance in Africa is demonstrated through my current service as a member of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) for the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF). This builds upon my previous experience as a MAG member for the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) from 2021 to 2024.
As a dedicated supporter of AFRALO's mission and its integral role within ICANN, I am confident that, with the support of community members, I can effectively and strategically represent the AFRALO community within the NomCom.
Sincerely,
Bram

Dear AFRALO Community,
I hope you’re all well!
Regarding the announcement for ALAC regional representative nominations, I would like to nominate Professor Aziz Hilali for a second term as the ALAC representative for AFRALO.
As many of you know, Aziz is a passionate advocate for AFRALO and consistently brings African end-users' perspectives to the ICANN community. His extensive connections across the community, hosted ICANN and us in Morocco multiple times, besides his deep experience in Internet governance as the founder and leader of ISOC Morocco, make him exceptionally qualified for this role.
During his first ALAC term (2023-2025), Aziz has been active, making impactful contributions to ICANN policy development while strongly representing our regional interests in global Internet governance discussions.
Supporting his nomination for a second term would ensure valuable continuity and strong leadership for AFRALO within ALAC. His continued service would build upon the relationships and initiatives he has already established.
Thank you!
Best regards,

Dear All,
I am honoured to express my interest in continuing to serve as Chair of the African Regional At-Large Organisation (AFRALO) for the upcoming two-year term. Over the past year and a half, I have had the privilege to work and collaborate with many of you, including members of AFRALO I had not previously engaged with. Together we have started several significant initiatives, AFRALO Advisory Group, Newcomers Capacity Building Working Group, AFRALO CIP and continuing AFRALO Rules of Procedure( RoP).
We have successfully organised our AFRALO’s first regional UA Day, with the second currently underway, showcasing the commitment of the entire AFRALO community to digital inclusion.
These accomplishments reflect our collective commitment to strengthening AFRALO’s role within Africa and the ICANN community. As my term concludes at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, I look forward to the opportunity to continue in the role of AFRALO Chair for a final two-year term, building on the progress we have made, striving to surpass it and learning from all previous AFRALO leaders. I respectfully seek your support. My At-Large Structure is Shaarawy Foundation for Development (SFD).
As you may already know I am a member of the SSAC, I was an ICANN58 fellow. My previous roles within the ICANN community include serving a ALAC-AFRALO representative to the NomCom from the 2019 to 2021 AGMs and as ALAC AFRALO member from the 2017 to 2019 AGMs. I am also an active member of the At-Large CPWG and the OFBWG and have contributed to several PDPs and regional ICANN strategies.
By training, I am an engineer, I hold a B.Sc. in Electronics and Communications from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, a M.Sc. in Management and Leadership from Szent Istvan University in Hungary and a Diploma in Engineering Management also from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University. I am also interested in Internet Governance and have participated in several global and regional IGFs
You can check my SOI at: https://icann-community.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/atlarge/pages/99725764/Ha…
Note: I have attached the included SOI for AFRALO Chair to this email
Best wishes

Hello All.
Hadia, you have my FULL SUPPORT for a second term.
Even though I contested with you in your first tenure but your antecedents in the last two years has proven your victory was and is appropriate for AFRALO. For over 25 years since I have been a member of AFRALO, I have never seen ANY versatile leader as you. You are not only intelligent, you are detribalised and not motivated by premordial allegiance of favouritism and nepotism that has over the years driven some of the past leadership of this organisation. I know some might hate me the more for this comment but I'm used to being brutally blunt.
You are innovative and open to intelligent and superior arguements. You are never threatened by any opposing views
The saying that the taste of the pudding is in the eating is apt in your case. Until you became our Chair, I had no opportunity of "tasting or eating" from your leadership prowess. But now I have tasted and can convincingly proclaim, you are good to be "eaten".😊
Congratulations because, I do not see anyone challenging you this time around. Carry Go! Nothing do you!!!

Hi s continued service would build upon the relationships and initiatives he has already established.
Thank you!
Best regards,
Mohamed Elbashir

Dear All,
I am honoured to express my interest in continuing to serve as Chair of the African Regional At-Large Organisation (AFRALO) for the upcoming two-year term.
You can check my SOI at: https://icann-community.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/atlarge/pages/99725764/Ha… [icann-community.atlassian.net]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/icann-community.atlassian.net/wiki/space…>
