Future of LGP and the vacant chair

Dear colleagues, it is really sad that Chris had to step down from the position as chair. I'm glad that we had him for so long and I am impressed at the amount of work he saw through together with the group. I suggest we discuss how to go on from here - What do you all think is the future of LGP? I think we need a chair, who ideally should receive strong secretariat support from ICANN to help organize the re-occurring chores of such a position, such as setting up calendar events, scheduling meetings, setting polls, helping with the infrastructure of shared documents, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to dedicate that much time to our group and therefore can not volunteer for such a role. However, I suggest we communicate to see if anyone among is able and ready to take such a position either temporarily, or ideally permanently. If there is no one for the moment, I assume we should talk about if and how we could operate without, a chair, or if structural changes are needed (multiple/split chairs) or if we should start reaching out to the community again until someone presents her or himself with enough support from the group and the community. Whatever road we take, I would wish for us to find a way to continue with this project. We have made good progress from my point of view and I believe this is important work. Best wishes, Meikal

Moving on

Dear colleagues, I'm writing to let you know that I need to step down from the LGP work, as my time at UCL is coming to an end. I have passed on to Sarmad all the documents we have worked on, including the version of the panel formation proposal with the IP's comments. I believe the latter forms the basis to structure the rest of the work, involving more help from ICANN staff and advisors. There is also a version of document where I have added the changes that could be implemented easily and left place-holders for the others. I have found my voluntary work with ICANN to be both interesting and challenging, and I have met some dedicated and talented people during it. May I wish you all the very best for the future. Dear Chris and Colleagues, Digraphs or more generally sequences of code points, can be specified as variants of a single code point. An excerpt from the LAGER specification : " A sequence of multiple code points can be specified as a variant of a single code point. For example, the sequence of LATIN SMALL LETTER O (U+006F) then LATIN SMALL LETTER E (U+0065) might hypothetically be specified as a variant for an LATIN SMALL LETTER O WITH DIAERESIS (U+00F6) as follows: <char cp="00F6"> <var cp="006F 0065"/> </char> " In the typical case of digraphs these are named precomposed versus decomposed formats of a single letter. Normalization should exist in Unicode in order to allow these variants, or otherwise block them. No LGP meeting today

One thing I would welcome your thoughts on is whether we release our draft repertoire, Eurocentric as it is, for public comment, or whether we wait for the IP's comments on the draft proposal and the 2nd Level Team's work to become public. Dear colleagues, Mirjana’s recent research on Montenegrin has raised some interesting issues. One of them is diagraphs. Currently we have digraphs like æ and œ in our repertoire, but Dutch ĳ (U+0133) as in vĳf ‘five’ is white in MSR-2 (not compatible with IDNA 2008). Certainly many digraphs, including ĳ are visually similar to their component letters. We could consider adding all digraphs to the list of criteria for exclusion, or adding them with exceptions (less good from a usability point of view). Incidentally, ß and & are probably excluded for other reasons, Longevity Principle and Punctuation, respectively. What do you think?
