Apply now for ICANN's Leadership Positions: Introducing the Nominating Committee (NomCom) The NomCom is an independent committee that, over a three-year cycle, is responsible for the selection and appointment of half of the voting members of ICANN's Board of Directors as well as members of ICANN's policy making Supporting Organizations and Advisory Councils. The 2011 NomCom is currently seeking volunteers willing to join ICANN's leadership and help shape the future of the Internet. The application process for the following positions is now open: * At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) (3 seats, Africa; Asia/Australia/Pacific; and Latin America/Caribbean Islands regions) * Generic Names Supporting Organization Council (GNSO) (2 seats) * Country Code Names Support Organization Council (ccNSO) (1 seat) * Board of Directors (2 seats) Information about the qualifications and experience required for these positions is available on the NomCom website <http://nomcom.icann.org/positions-2011.htm> Self-nominations are welcome, or you can suggest a candidate -- if you know someone who could help lead development of policy for the Domain Name System, then the NomCom wants to hear from you! Call for RALO Volunteers for ccNSO Study Group on Use of Names for Countries and Territories

Dear All, On behalf of Olivier Crépin-Leblond, ALAC Chair, and Cheryl Langdon-Orr, ALAC ccNSO Liaison, a call for volunteers from the RALOs to join a new ccNSO Study Group on the Use of Names for Countries and Territories is being made through 4 March 2011. This Study Group will work on the use of names for countries and territories. One representative per RALO is needed. The first meeting of the Study Group will be held during the 40th ICANN Meeting in San Francisco, so At-Large representatives who will be participating in this Meeting are preferred. This Study Group was established at the 39th ICANN Meeting in Cartagena in December 2010 in response to the note of the chair of this working group that some of the issues that are raised are considered outside the scope of the PDP (for example how to deal with meaningful representations of country or territory names that do not contain a non-ASCII character or are not in a designated language). The purpose of this Study Group is to provide the ccNSO Council, ccTLD community and other interested stakeholders, including the GAC and GNSO Council, an overview of the scope and issues associated with the use of Country and Territory names as TLD strings and the scope and impact of alternative action paths on IDN ccTLD and new gTLD processes. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internets unique identifiers. ICANN doesnt control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesnt deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internets naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.
