Reflections on NomCom 2014 experience ....

Dear Euralo colleagues, warm greetings to you all! As I am leaving London this morning for home, I am also leaving behind a tremendous amount of work that has been done by NomCom 2014. In line with the above, I wanted to thank you all for entrusting me to serve on NomCom during the past 2 years. It has been a very rewarding professional experience and t*he level of colleagiality, engagement, professionalism of the leadership of NomCom 2014 has just been stunning: Cheryl's extraordinay management and leadership skills, Stephan's capacity to challenge and his analytical thinking, Yrjo's tactfulness and diplomatic skills - all made it a very succesul NomCom and I am very proud to having had the opportunity to be on NomCom! * Of course, there is nothing perfect in this world, so we will continue (in the months to come), building on our key take away and contribute to the 'continuity' of NomCom via frameworks, approaches, mechanisms which could be institutionalized and make the work of the upcoming NomComs even better. For colleagues who are going to become part of NomComs in the future, here are my few tips based on the past 2 years: 1. *Time* *Management* - make sure you dedicate at least 4-8 hours per week on a regular basis to be able to keep track of what is being discussed and thus, be able to contribute. During the period when the SOIs (Statements of interest) are already in place, make sure you dedicate more time, especially to analyse carefully the data provided by the candidates; 2. * Outreach *- make sure you are using all the opportunities /other fora you are part of, in order to reach out to the best candidates possible. Be present online, share via the social media, engage with people who might be interested and encourage them to apply for ICANN leadership positions NomCom will recruit for. 3. *Latest research on core competences * - document yourself on competences that are needed and will be needed given the rapidly evolving world, look beyond the standard ones, try to be futuristing in your thinking when dealing with candidates and see how much of their competences will help them get out of their 'comfort zone' and really be able to provide input and make things progress; 4. *Latest research on personal development* - professional life needs to be balanced, and that means people should have personal development related goals and objectives. How you are able to 'read' through candidates' statements and interviews how much of that balance is in place, what do those people want to achieve in their lives in the years to come - again, this is something to do some research about. it is very valuable to bring these perpectives into the discussions as well. 5. *Emerging issues and international agenda/politics/diplomacy* - these are areas NomCom members have to also be able to bring some reflections on, given that candidates one brings to ICANN will be facing challenges related not only to the technical side of the issue, but also with other dimensions such as diplomayc/politics and be able to analyze and interprete how these are going to affect the work of ICANN in the years ahead. Well documentation of hte latest regional and international trends is crucial. 6. *Self-motivation* - NomCom needs people with intrinsic motivation, able to self-organize and really be interested in doing the work ahead of them. There is noone in NomCom responsible for motivating you, as a member, to be more active, or to incentivize you - this is not the case! You either do it, or will be left behind! It is all in your hands! So, if there is no strong internal motivation for this, NomCom is not for you:)! And finally, I will end up with one of the quotes from Jim Carrey which I really like a lot - "the best currency one has today is the capacity to influence the others" (lives, activity, etc in a positive sense) - So, if you consider that you have that capacity + all the above, NomCom is a perfect venue for you:)! GA and Fayre of opportunities

Dear all, I hope everybody is safe and sound at home after London. It was absolutely fantastic event, and now we have a lot of work to do. For me it means first of all to make some summaries from the work which is done. Thousand of thanks for fantastic experience with EURALO GA - I filled myself 25 years younger, returned to my Soviet past. And thousand of thanks for Fayre of opportunities . I did see great opportunities in APRALO and I applied to it as an individual member. I also highly appreciate great work, which was done by TG4 on Transparency and Accountability. One of our recommendation was to strengthen the role of Ombudsman on this issue. I used already this opportunity and asked for his help in understanding situation within EURALO regarding duties and responsibilities of EURALO officers. Best regards, Oksana

@ London ICANN meeting

Dear colleagues, warm greetings to you all and it is a pity I could not join you on time for our EURALO General Assembly @ ICANN meeting in London! While my visa was ready last Wednesday, there were delays in time delivery of my passport from UK visa center in Warsaw and it has finally arrived to Moldova this afternoon! Just wanted to share in brief with you that I have been participating remotely in the 2 days of NomCom meetings in London (on Sunday and Monday) and took an active part in the pre-interviews, during interviews and post interviews debriefing and reflections and have not missed any minute of this :)! And I am also following remotely the EURALO General Assembly @ ICANN right now, and will join you all in person tomorrow evening! If it can be of any interest, Best regards, Yuliya SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN DATA PROTECTION HANDBOOK UPDATED AND TRANSLATED FRA and the Council of Europe have launched a new edition of their successful practical guide to European data protection law and made it available in four other languages at the European conference of data protection authorities in Strasbourg on 5 June. The first edition of the handbook proved so popular it was quickly out of print, while the online version got some 17,500 downloads. FRA and the Council of Europe therefore decided to update the content and make it available in more languages. It is now available in English, French, German, Greek and Italian. The English version of the handbook was first launched on 28 January 2014, on Data Protection Day. It was the first comprehensive guide to Council of Europe and European Union law on data protection, taking into account the case law from the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. It explains how data protection is regulated under EU law as well as the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, and other Council of Europe instruments. The second edition of the handbook covers the latest developments in the area of data protection, such as decisions related to the Data Retention Directive and the independence of data protection supervisory authorities. The handbook is aimed at non-specialist legal professionals, judges, national data protection authorities and anyone else who may be confronted with legal questions in the area of data protection. It covers issues such as data protection terminology; key principles and the rules of data protection law; data subjects’ rights and their enforcement; transborder data flow; and data protection in the context of police and criminal justice. Versions of the handbook in Bulgarian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian and Spanish will also be published later this year.
