Good afternoon: Allow me to draw your attention to the announcement of the composition and portfolios of the new European Commission from the point of view of Digital Economy and Society, the Internet and Internet Governance. http://ec.europa.eu/about/juncker-commission/commissioners-designate/index_… The Vice President of the Commission for the Digital Single Market will be Andrus Ansip (EE) The Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society will be Günther Oettinger (DE). In particular his responsibilities include: "Working with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President to develop the relationship with strategic partners in order to build a global governance architecture for the Internet which is legitimate, transparent, accountable, sustainable and inclusive. This includes ensuring the Internet remains open, a driving force for innovation and an international resource that benefits the European economy and citizens." I am sure that more detailed reporting and analysis will emerge in the next few days. Meanwhile, I thought that you might welcome a 'heads up' as to these developments.. Dear All, On behalf of Judith Hellerstein, At-Large Captioning Pilot Project group lead and NARALO's Secretary, this is a reminder to submit your request for captioning facilities for calls to be held in April 2016. The implementation of this project will be structured as follows: * Three calls to include captioning each month for a total of 9 teleconferences, not exceeding 60 minutes per call (with the exception of the ALAC Monthly Meeting) * The calls shall be held between January - first week June 2016. * During the first pilot phase of this captioning project the language used will be English. * In order to select the calls the captioning team has developed a set of criteria to evaluate and rate the requests. The request for captioning must meet at least one of these criteria to be put on the list. Criteria for Captioning: 1) Are there persons with disabilities or with limited bandwidth participating? 2) Are there webinars of general interest to the ICANN community that would increase the engagement of non-native English speakers? 3) Are the meetings or discussions about accessible tools or software? Crocker submitted to the U.S. Government a plan developed by the international Internet community that, if approved, will lead to global stewardship of some key technical Internet functions. "This plan is a testament to the hard work of the global Internet community and the strength of the multistakeholder model," said Crocker, who transmitted the plan on behalf of the global community. "The plan has now been sent to the U.S. Government for its review, and assuming it meets the necessary criteria, we will have reached an historic moment in the history of the Internet." The plan provides a comprehensive package to transition the U.S. Government's stewardship of these technical functions, called the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which are critical to the Internet's smooth operation. It also proposes ways to enhance ICANN's accountability as a fully independent organization. The transition is the final step in the long-anticipated privatization of the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), first outlined when ICANN was incorporated in 1998. Africa's population will make up a quarter of the next four billion people to be connected globally. The interactive discussion focused on the economic and social aspects of Africa's digital opportunities - and the hurdles that Africa needs to overcome to meet its digital potential. Session participants also heard success stories from the region.
