Hi all. As most of you know, I have been always pushing for Universal Acceptance, including the deployment of IDN TLDs. I strongly believe that this is one of the game changers for reaching out to the next billion Internet users and giving equal opportunities for enjoying the benefits of online communication. There will be a working session at EuroDIG (https://www.eurodig.org<https://www.eurodig.org/>) on this topic on Wednesday 6 June - see the full programme at https://eurodigwiki.org/wiki/Consolidated_programme_2018. I have been appointed focal point for the session, and will therefore coordinate participation. I wonder whether there are any former Directors that are either directly interested or could indicate people within their respective networks who are interested in participating to the discussion on this topic and/or joining the session in Tbilisi. The first step would be to join the EuroDIG-WS6 mailing list, where the session on Universal Acceptance is being prepared. Call for comments

As I hope you are all aware, due to the European General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), access to some gTLD Domain Name registrant information (WHOIS) is being restricted. Traditionally, for a registrant who did not use a proxy service a WHOIS Query would reveal their full name, address, phone number and e-mail address. If you do a lookup for one of my addresses today you will see almost nothing! Try looking up alangreenberg.org at https://whois.icann.org. This increases privacy for some registrants and also makes information harder to access for those who currently use WHOIS. There are serious monetary fines associated with GDPR, so compliance is important. In addressing the new regulations, there has been a lot of discussion within ICANN over the last year. A GNSO Policy Development Process (PDP) started about 2 years ago which should have provided a new system (now called a Registration Directory Service (RDS) instead of WHOIS), but unfortunately that process has not completed in sufficient time. As a result, to meet the GDPR deadline of 25 May 2018, the ICANN Board implemented a Temporary Specification Policy to allow us and our contracted parties (Registrars and Registries) to be GDPR-compliant. That temporary policy must be replaced by a permanent one within one year - a VERY short time for ICANN policy development. The GNSO is starting an Expedited PDP which can complete faster than a regular PDP. The ALAC is being given two Members in the this group. We need to establish what our guiding principles are. At-Large ALS/ISOC Chapter Booth at IGF2018

Dear Colleagues, on Tuesday's EURALO monthly call, the ICANN Board member selected by At-Large, Leon Sanchez, announced that there would be a joint ALS/ISOC Chapter Booth at the forthcoming Internet Governance Forum in Paris (IGF 2018). This raised a few questions of conflict, since of EURALO's 37 ALSes, there are 11 ISOC Chapters. I am aware of EURALO's early history, growth and founding ALSes. Some ALSes support closer integration of ISOC & ICANN activities. Some do not. A decision will have to be made on this soon. The question is therefore, are you, in principle, okay or opposed to having a joint ALS / ISOC Chapter booth at the forthcoming IGF Paris 2018? In light of the European General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), the ICANN Board enacted a temporary policy governing WHOIS (now know as Registration Data) effective 25 May 2018. This temporary policy must be replaced by a permanent policy within one year. To take this action, the GNSO has initiated and Expedited Policy Development Policy. The Charted for this process is expected to be approved by the GNSO on 19 July 2018, and a group convened to develop the policy will be convened soon after. Although the membership quotas of this group will not be definitively known until the charter is approved, at this point we expect that the ALAC will be given three Members and three Alternates. It is expected that Alternates may only actively participate if a Member is not available, but would be expected to be prepared to participate if needed. Members and Alternates representing the ALAC will work as a team to develop an ALAC position and strive to appropriately effect the policy effort. There will be regular consultation with the ALAC and At-Large. Since the policy must be in place by 25 May 2019, it is expected that a draft policy will be prepared in time for the ICANN63 meeting in late October 2018.
