BCEC Announcement of Statistics of EOIs Received for Position of ICANN Board Director

Dear All, Please find below a note sent on behalf of Roberto Gaetano, Chair of the At-Large Board Candidate Evaluation Committee (BCEC), on the Expressions of Interest received for the position of ICANN Board Director selected by At-Large. ** Dear All, A total of 11 Expressions of Interest were received by the Board Candidate Evaluation Committee for the position of At-Large Board Director. Out of these 11 applications, 2 were deemed to be too incomplete to proceed further. The remaining 9 Expressions of Interest are currently being considered by the members of the Board Candidate Evaluation Committee. The names of the BCEC selected slate of candidates will be released on 28 January 2014. Statistics of the 9 completed Expressions of Interest show a wide array of professional backgrounds. From the 9 completed Expressions of Interest, 4 applicants are not currently active in the At-Large community while 5 are currently active. Male applicants (7) make up the vast majority of applicants with only 2 female applicants. Dear colleagues, greetings and a warm hello to you all! Let me wish you a very prosperous 2014, and may it be full of positive surprises, achievements, success stories and much more! As you already know, NomCom shares its monthly report cards and here comes the last Report Card for 2013 - for December! As you will find it from the Report: At its first meeting after the kick-off at ICANN 48 in Buenos Aires a month earlier, the 2014 NomCom reviewed the work of three sub-committees as well as outreach efforts so far and discussed its next steps leading to the call for applications. During the December NomCom call, more updates on the sub-committees related work and outreach efforts have been shared, while next immediate steps have been agreed upon! Will get back with the Report Card for January 2014 as soon as we are ready with our first NomCom meeting of this year! Wishing you all much luck in your initiatives and stay in touch! I support Wolf's suggestion: the ICANN map of regions is inconsistant with reality. Yes, stiching Armenia onto the fabric of the Pacific is gross. But we need to take this action a step further. It is time to draw attention to the geo-srategic anomalies of the current arrangement. Example: bundling together the whole of Asia and the Pacific has provided some countries (Australia, New Zealand) with an advantage, not only in comparison with much larger populations (China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan...), but also in relation to much smaller ones. While NA and LA broadly reflect reality, ICANN's current geography is unfair in Europe or AP. One is even led to wonder if the initial choice was not made deliberately to favour some countries (say "white" English-speaking) to the detriment of others? It's high time for ICANN to make its map of regions more credible for the twenty-first century. And the ALAC can spearhead such a move.
