Dear all, In Finland and Sweden, Midsummer is a major holiday. I'm puzzled why it does not make the ICANN list, not as a "major holiday" and not even as "other holidays", even though the latter contains many purely national holidays. In 2014, Midsummer celebrations in Finland and Sweden fall on June 20.-22. and in 2015, on June 19.-21. Midsummer is celebrated in other Northern countries too, although the dates may slightly vary. In the case of Finland and Sweden, it is always geared to Friday-Sunday. In some other countries, it is a fixed date. Dear All, On behalf of Olivier Crépin-Leblond, ALAC Chair, and Cheryl Langdon-Orr, ALAC ccNSO Liaison, a call for volunteers from the RALOs to join a new ccNSO Study Group on the Use of Names for Countries and Territories is being made through 4 March 2011. This Study Group will work on the use of names for countries and territories. One representative per RALO is needed. The first meeting of the Study Group will be held during the 40th ICANN Meeting in San Francisco, so At-Large representatives who will be participating in this Meeting are preferred. This Study Group was established at the 39th ICANN Meeting in Cartagena in December 2010 in response to the note of the chair of this working group that some of the issues that are raised are considered outside the scope of the PDP (for example how to deal with meaningful representations of country or territory names that do not contain a non-ASCII character or are not in a designated language). The purpose of this Study Group is to provide the ccNSO Council, ccTLD community and other interested stakeholders, including the GAC and GNSO Council, an overview of the scope and issues associated with the use of Country and Territory names as TLD strings and the scope and impact of alternative action paths on IDN ccTLD and new gTLD processes. Priority in selection is given to applicants who are current residents of developing and least developed nations and interested in participating in ICANN and its supporting organizations and constituencies, or are representatives in the Business, Academic and Private sector looking to find support and gain information on how to have their voices heard in the Internet community and ICANN. The Fellowship program will assist in covering airfare, hotel and a stipend for those individuals selected to participate in this ICANN meeting. As always, registration for ICANNs meetings is free for anyone wanting to attend. What Is ICANN? To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internets unique identifiers. ICANN doesnt control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesnt deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internets naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.
