Dear colleagues, With only positive responses and no opposition or abstentions, the 24H consensus call asking our community whether EURALO should Nominate Stéphane van Gelder for the ICANN Multistakeholder Ethos Award, has ended in full support. Please be so kind to find the Nomination for Stéphane van Gelder which I have just filed with the Multistakeholder Ethos Award Committee on behalf of EURALO. Best, Olivier MJ Crépin-Leblond --- cut here --- 1. Demonstrated ability to work across community lines with both familiar and unfamiliar ICANN Stakeholders with the aim of consensus building and collaboration that substantiate ICANN's multistakeholder model; /Stéphane was an inspiration for ICANN"s multi-stakeholder model. From being a commercial, contracted party in the Registrar and Registry Stakeholder Groups, Stéphane chaired the GNSO Council in a neutral manner and using great communication and consensus building skills. He then went on to spend several years in the leadership team of the ICANN Nominating Committee, a position that again requires great communication skills across an even wider range of stakeholders. Unusually, but to his credit, he was also active as an individual end user in the work of EURALO - where his aim was to help the At-Large Community improve the quality of its output. He was one of the earliest and a key member of the EURALO Individuals Association./ 2. Facilitator of dialogue and open discussion in a fair and collegial manner, through the spirit of collaboration as shown through empathy and demonstrating a sincere desire to engage with people from other backgrounds, cultures, and interests; /He Chaired the GNSO Council and he Chaired the NomCom. It takes great skills and investment to achieve success in these committees without being accused of all sins. // / 3. Demonstrated additional devotional factors exhibited by time spent supporting ICANN's multistakeholder model and its overall effectiveness through volunteer service via working groups or committees. /At the SO/AC Chairs dinner in San José, Costa Rica, the then CEO Rod Beckstrom asked each of us how much we took of our time to devote pro-bono assuming our SO/AC Chairing duties. Stéphane answered that he spent well in excess of 20-25 hours per week on GNSO work. Not content of having spent two years Chairing the GNSO Council, he went on to Chair the ICANN Nominating Committee. Not only did his involvement in ICANN last for a long time, it was also intense and an integral part of his life./ Please provide any further information in support of your nomination for panelists to review during the deliberation process as appropriate: /I am submitting this nomination both on behalf of EURALO and on my behalf. After calls to nominate Stéphane echoed in our community, EURALO underwent a 24 hour consensus call to confirm EURALO consensus for Stéphane's nomination. 24H Consensus Call - Nomination for Ethos Award

Dear colleagues, the European At-Large Organisation (EURALO) has held its monthly call earlier this evening and after holding a 1 minute silence in memory of Stéphane van Gelder who has left us in tragic circumstances, participants on the call fully supported the proposal of a motion to be made by an ALAC member, for the ALAC to decide to nominate Stéphane van Gelder for the ICANN Ethos Award. As you have seen in my previous email, I have transmitted this request to the ALAC. In a consensus call that just happened, the ALAC unanimously endorsed this motion. Since Stéphane was an individual member of EURALO, I have also been asked by those present on the call, to issue a 24H consensus call on the following motion: "EURALO to support the nomination of Stéphane van Gelder (SVG) for the Multistakeholder Ethos Award to be announced in June 2018 at ICANN62 Panama City." The Ethos Award nomination period has been extended to 28 March 2018 (https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2018-03-20-en ), thus there isn't enough time to hold a full vote of our At-Large Structures (ALSes). But a 24H consensus call is possible. Dear Paul, personally, I'd like to support this nomination so please write me down in support. Unfortunately I do not have the time to issue a consensus call for this nomination on the EURALO mailing list, but all day tributes and messages of support have been coming from EURALO members. Several of our members have also suggested the same nomination. It is worth noting that he has also held a leading role in the establishment of the EURALO Individuals Association. That, in itself, shows how Stéphane was active with so many communities in ICANN. Dear Colleagues, it is with immense sadness that I have to relay the news of the death of Stéphane van Gelder which occurred abruptly over the week-end. Indeed, after the San Juan meeting, Stéphane went to Italy for a well earned holiday. He had a motorcycle accident. Some of us might know him from having worked with him on the Nominating Committee, which he chaired in 2015 (Oct 2014 to Oct 2015) and 2016 but also as a member in other years. Some of you might have known him when he was Chair of the Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) Council in 2010 and 2011. It was then, that I got to know him as I was ALAC Chair at the time. Stéphane was not the kind of person who took to a position and did nothing with it. He liked challenges and led many improvements in all of the positions that he held. He was also not scared of intervening when he felt something was wrong in a process or a system. Having founded a Registry in the late nineties, Stéphane sold it and remained a consultant and businessman in recent years, also becoming one of EURALO's first individual members (after he actually asked me whether in my view, that was suitable or not). Folks, I was under shock yesterday when I learned about this accident. I did some research on the internet this morning and found the local news report. The pictures show that after the impact the car overturned to the side - I can only imagine how devastating was the hit to the two bikers. I am not forwarding any of the material I have seen, but to those who want to get more information these are the details that you can use with a search engine. The accident has taken place this last Friday in the vicinity of Riva San Vitale. Stéphane and his wife were transferred to a hospital, where he passed away Monday. Most of the information available is in Italian, you might use the online translators to get the sense of it. Roberto
