The 2012 Applicant Guidebook was silent on the concept of generic terms (i.e. books, perfume, etc.) being used by a single company, or “closed.” The GAC advised against them unless they were in the global public interest but left that undefined. Given the lack of consensus, coming out of the Subsequent Procedures Workgroup, there is currently no policy in place, leaving the development of a policy on Closed Generics in the hands of the board. Dear EURALO Members, I hope everything is well on your side! I have 2 topics of appeal to you: 1. As you know, I am serving the position of EURALO Co-chair of Social Media WG. Now is the time to replace me in this position. We need to choose a new chairman of the Social Media working group among us. Due to the significant workload I have now I am not able to focus on this work. The general obligations of this work should be focus on the building the social media plans, activities in social media on behalf of Euralo (I will continue to do everything I can in this direction), participation in meetings of the working group (1 time per 2-3 months approximately) and the obligation to support the At-Large SoMe activities of the extended community during the meetings of the ICANN if the location of these meetings is the European region. And of course to coordinate all work and activities which we are building like a part of At-Large Communication Strategy and Outreach and Engagement work. I also would like to remind that not only one co-chairman can/should participate in the affairs of the SM working group (as it has been for the last 2 years), but also other members - your participation is actively welcome.-) This applies to all At-Large working groups. I kindly ask you to inform me about your desire to take on this responsibility and send an email to Evin Ashley Erdoğdu and EURALO Chairman Sebastien Bachollet with a copy . Your applications will be considered. I would like to continue to be a member of SM WG, but to pay more attention to operational issues and development of our community. 2. After a certain break, I resume the preparation of the new issue of the Euralo newsletter. The next edition will be released until (I hope) October 10, 2021, the reporting period is from June to September 2021. I kindly ask you to give me information about the activities of our structures and individual members on the ground that relate to IG and ICANN issues by personal messages to my email address (without a copy to everyone). We hope that despite the difficult period of heavy workload on volunteers (working-, family-, daily-, solving health-related issues ) and the lack of personal meetings will not prevent us all from finding an opportunity to participate in the life of Euralo not only for a tight circle of active people, but for all participants of the EURALO and our Individuals Association. His research is highly interdisciplinary, primarily combining legal research with computer science. His research interests cover a broad range of legal issues arising in the context of (i) robots, particularly with artificial intelligence capabilities, (ii) Internet governance (especially the domain name system), as well as (iii) cybersecurity and privacy. This focus on legal issues is complemented with research on legal technology to facilitate novel approaches such as legal risk management and visual representations of legal reasoning. He holds a PhD from the University of Oslo, an LLM degree in legal informatics from the University of Hannover, and a German law degree (first state exam). He has practised law in Norway as a corporate lawyer in the automotive industry, primarily working with international commercial contracts. Prof. Mahler is the Director of the Master of Laws Programme in Information and Communication Technology Law at the University of Oslo. He teaches robot regulation, cybersecurity regulation, legal technology and artificial intelligence. Mahler has been a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany, and the Stanford Centre for Internet and Society. Dear All, The monthly roundtable 7 (by EURALO): “DNS Abuse and intermediary liability of non-hosting providers” is scheduled on Tuesday 21 September at 18:00 UTC for 90 minutes. The EURALO Roundtable will focus on recent ICANN responses to the DSA package and welcome input from leading European academics, who had reported on Internet governance, the DNA package and intermediary liability to the European Comission. It will be a part of the EURALO DNS Abuse end user information campaign<https://community.icann.org/x/SwQNCQ>, giving the European end user community an opportunity to discuss DNS Abuse related European legislative developments in an attempt to identify and best represent European end user interests within ICANN policy development and capacity building processes. We will also explore opportunities to expand the end user network to work with local NGOs, governments, and academia to ensure a good representation of ICANN core values in European polices. Guest Speakers: * Tobias Mahler, University of Oslo, Tobias Mahler is a law professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo, where he is deputy director of the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law (NRCCL). He specializes in information and communications technology law and is the legal research leader of the VIROS project (Vulnerability in the Robot Society). His research is highly interdisciplinary, primarily combining legal research with computer science. His research interests cover a broad range of legal issues arising in the context of (i) robots, particularly with artificial intelligence capabilities, (ii) Internet governance (especially the domain name system), as well as (iii) cybersecurity and privacy. This focus on legal issues is complemented with research on legal technology to facilitate novel approaches such as legal risk management and visual representations of legal reasoning. He holds a PhD from the University of Oslo, an LLM degree in legal informatics from the University of Hannover, and a German law degree (first state exam). He has practised law in Norway as a corporate lawyer in the automotive industry, primarily working with international commercial contracts. Prof. Mahler is the Director of the Master of Laws Programme in Information and Communication Technology Law at the University of Oslo. He teaches robot regulation, cybersecurity regulation, legal technology and artificial intelligence. Mahler has been a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany, and the Stanford Centre for Internet and Society.
