Dear all, as discussed at our (well attended) monthly call tonight – agenda item 8 -, there are some URGENCIES for our region over the next weeks regarding the ICANN Board candidate (Seat 15) selection and voting consultations among our members. A first Announcement: At-Large Board Director Slate of Candidates Selected by the BCEC and Next Steps was sent to this list by At-Large Staff on 28 January to give you a first overview about the five candidates. Further to this, one of our ALAC members who are part of the electorate is personally involved as one of the candidates (Jean-Jacques Subrenat) and needs to be replaced for the voting –- for more details see: https://community.icann.org/display/ABMS/At-Large+Board+Member+2014+Selecti… As discussed tonight, we would like to ask you for suggestions of names to replace Jean-Jacques Subrenat in the upcoming voting. As the timeframe is short for this (4th March) you can name suitable replacements until Friday this week (28 February midnight). If we receive more than one suggestion, we have to conduct a majority vote until the beginning of next week on EURALO’s proxy vote. As it is difficult to assume how many of our members will contribute within a few days, let me suggest that a simple majority of those who respond will count. According to the narrow timeline of the Board Member Selection process, we need to conduct our regional consultation on the five candidates until Sunday, 16 March (!) – to allow the Chair (who is part of the electorate as well) a *directed vote from our community*, as we did in 2010 during the first Board Member Selection process. Based on the experience from 2010, there won’t be a winner in the first round vote (starting from 16 March) and we may need to conduct a 2nd regional consultation on the final candidates early April. I am aware that this is a challenging schedule for EURALO again but – as in the past – our members should have a say in this important selection process for Seat 15 again. Dear All, After nearly three years helping to support the At-Large community, Matt Ashtiani will be moving to the Strategic Initiatives division to take up his new role as Strategic Initiatives Manager. He will be transitioning out of his current position over the next several weeks. The At-Large staff support team thanks Matt for his great work and wish him all the best in his new position! We’ll miss you, Matt! At the same time, we are very happy to be able to welcome Xinyue (Ariel) Liang<http://www.icann.org/en/about/staff/liang-ariel.htm> in her new role as At-Large Policy Coordinator. Ariel has a perfect skill set for supporting the At-Large community, including strong communication, creative and language skills as well as international experience. Prior to joining ICANN, Ariel interned at the United Nations Secretariat in New York to assist the marketing communications efforts of the Department of Public Information. She also worked at the Washington D.C. office of Mitsui & Co., where she researched, analyzed, and reported on U.S. policy issues significant to Mitsui’s business in the Asia-Pacific region. Ariel completed a Master’s Degree in Communications at Columbia University and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Global and Transnational History from Vanderbilt University. In addition to her native Mandarin Chinese, she is fluent in English and proficient in Japanese. She will be based in the Washington, D.C. Engagement Office. With Ariel’s arrival, the At-Large staff has expanded its global reach in terms of international experience, cultural background and language skills. Welcome, Ariel! And I think it's more than fair to held such events in different / changing parts of Europe (with the consequences involved). The problem of "little political impact on regulatory and other relevant policies, including the EU's position internationally" is known but cannot conversely mean to focus our efforts mostly on the EU. The Commission was invited since years to become an institutional partner of EuroDIG and to contribute substantially (as others do) but kept low profile ... (to be polite) -- we won't change EuroDIG's concept just for being more interesting or instrumental to the EUC. And we have no capacities nor resources for the usual policy and lobbying theatre performed in Brussels (except being a member of the EIF). On your last point (PS), EURALO was closely involved in EuroDIG from the beginning what became one of the main fields of our regional activities incl. outreach etc. -- therefore I see now problem to post such interrelated issues on this list. On the other hand, EuroDIG will launch its new Website soon which will contain more of such interactive elements -- whether it needs a discussion list like this, is another question.
