In accordance with its plan for consultation and writing the next version of the ICANN's Strategic Plan, ICANN posted the Strategic Planning Issues Paper resulting from the sessions held at ICANN's meeting in Luxembourg. I am sending this paper to you, the chairs of ICANN's Supporting Organisations and Advisory Committees, for review and comment. ICANN will synthesize input from the chairs and those resulting from the public comment forum established by this posting to create the resulting Key Prioities document that will form the foundation of the Strategic Plan. As you know, ICANN is planning to hold a Strategic Planning consultation in Marina del Rey on 18-19 October. We look forward to hearing from you regarding whether you (or your designee) can attend. Regarding GAC's WHOIS workshop in Vancouver

Hello All, I have been asked recently for information on the state of planning for the GAC WHOIS workshop in Vancouver. Below is a copy of my response: Right now the focus is on finalising the timetable for Vancouver - rather than a detailed agenda. I think at this stage the Whois Workshop will be on Tuesday morning. Any details that I have are available at: http://gac.icann.org/web/home/IVC_Schedule.doc The GAC website states that the meeting: "The Whois Workshop will follow up on the Whois/Law Enforcement workshop in Luxembourg and address the protection of privacy, consumers and intellectual property in access to and use of Whois databases." This is a committee being formed pursuant to an ICANN Board Resolution. The scope and responsibility of the Committee is to provide the Board and ICANN community with advice on issues that relate to IDN policies, in particular issues that impact the implementation of IDN especially at the top level. More specifically the committee will - * Ensure discussions on IDN within ICANN contributes to the development of the name space. * Ensure discussions promote the use of languages on the Internet in a manner that ensures the Internet's continued stability and interoperability. * Strengthen inclusion, coordination and collaboration of all organizations involved in IDN discussions and the developing implementation of multilingual domain name solutions. * Ensure discussions between the different organizations and stakeholders (technical, political, government, private sector) on challenges in the successful implementation of IDNs in ICANN's area of responsibility, including the DNS. * Contribute towards the ongoing discussions, and identification of challenges, in the successful implementation of IDNs. Paul Twomey has specifically asked for someone from the Registrars to take part in this committee. The representative will not be a formal representative from the Registrars constituency, but would essentially bring in the view points of Registrars to the group. I would like to have someone who is well aware of IDN related issues and aspects volunteer for this. Regarding cooperating with the ccNSO on IDNs

Hello All, Consistent with the decision of the meeting on 1 September 2005: http://www.gnso.icann.org/meetings/minutes-gnso-01sep05.shtml "The establishment of a shared policy development process to be undertaken in collaboration with the ccNSO [and other relevant parties as expert advisors] for the introduction of IDNs at the root level. " The ccNSO have nominated the following three people to work with us on a joint working group for IDNs.
