Thanks very much for your comments, David. I would pose the exact same questions back with respect to the suggestion to add “data protection and privacy law.” Likewise, pardon my teasing, but are you suggesting that the six representatives the NCSG already generally provides to council are somehow inadequate in this regard? In the end, I think it would be great if more folks in leadership positions within ICANN exhibited a demonstrated comprehension (and better yet, a commitment toward the protection) of intellectual property law. Or perhaps you are suggesting that council needs more people who are able to provide an expert intellectual property law perspective from outside the IPC, in which case I agree :-) But if you'll pardon my teasing above - more seriously, while I absolutely agree that intellectual property law expertise is valuable to council, I would have thought intellectual property law is also one area of expertise that council is pretty much guaranteed to possess, and the NomCom appointees are designed more to fill gaps, rather than bolster areas of relative strength? In addition to members, who are appointed by the chartering organizations, anyone interested in the work of the CWG, can join as a participant. Participants are expected to actively engage in and attend all meetings. The only difference between a member and a participant is that any consensus calls or formal decisions that may need to be made will be limited to CWG members appointed by the chartering organizations. However, this does not take away that it is the expectation that the CWG will operate as much as possible with the views and consensus support of all participants in mind as the importance of considering all input and views on this important topic is recognized. Participants may be from a chartering organization, from a stakeholder group or organization not represented in the CWG or currently active within ICANN, or self-appointed. All, I have received a request from the ICANN Nominations Committee chair to provide a revised or re-confirmed skill-set description. Apparently the last such skill set review was revised and updated back in 2010. Therefore, it is certainly timely to provide a revision, update or re-affirmation of what they are working with. "I am pleased to welcome Olga back to the International Bureau. Olga brings a tremendous amount of international telecommunications experience to the Division and will be a tremendous asset for the Bureau," said Mindel De La Torre. Ms. Madruga-Forti returns to the Commission with 17 years of private sector international telecommunications experience, most recently with ARSAT Telecomm S.A. where she was International Counsel. Additionally, Ms. Madruga-Forti was a Member of the Board for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and an Adjunct Professor of Telecommunications Law and Negotiation. Ms. Madruga-Forti left the Commission in 1997 when she served as Special Counsel for International Satellite Policy in the International Bureau and spearheaded the privatization of Intelsat and Inmarsat. She holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. from Emory University. --FCC--

Volunteers requested - GNSO Council liaisons

Dear All, One of the items of the wrap up meeting was finding volunteers for the different liaison positions that have become vacant due to people stepping down from the GNSO Council. You¹ll find below a list of working groups / efforts in need of a liaison and a list of those that volunteered during the wrap up session. If there are additional volunteers for these efforts, please feel free to share your interest with the list. As a reminder, the main objective of a liaison is to be able to assist the WG should there be any issues or questions for the GNSO Council as well as being able to address any questions the GNSO Council may have in relation to the effort. Furthermore, a liaison facilitates the submission of documents and motions once the WG has completed its work.
