Sophia Bekele - Nominating Committee appointee to the GNSO Council I represent a California based, privately held company, CBS Enterprise Group, which is engaged in international business. As part of its portfolio of services, the company provides systems integration services through CBS International, which delivers domain registration, web hosting and email services to end users via a reseller, agreement with registrars. Less than 10% of CBS's business is derived from these services. ICANN is a critical organization for the proper governance of the Internet and its stability and security. Given current growing environment of the Internet, there are many challenges ahead for ICANN. I am most interested in issues of emerging economies and the use of ICT and the growth of Internet or lack thereof over these environments. Therefore, the policies developed by ICANN over issues governing the global Internet particularly domain names could determine the gap in the digital divide within these economies. As such, I am actively involved in the policy development process of the International Domain Names (IDNs) and generic Top Level Domain names (gTLDs) that are of concern. I have also initiated and pursuing the efforts for a successful launch of the '.Africa' continental domain name project within ICANN and the African community. Towards this end, I will be continuing my interest in these areas. In my personal capacity, I do not have any of my moneys, invested in companies that are in the registrar businesses. I do not believe that any activities of the Council or ICANN could have a material effect on the work I do at CBS International.

I am an independent research consultant and a part time adjunct professor at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. I also have a recurring contract with the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) as a consultant to its secretariat and am an associate of the Interisle Consulting Group. Interisle Consulting Group is the independent contractor that is currently being utilized for the ICANN Nominating Committee Review. I have no role in this review, am not involved in any of this work and am completely shielded from any of the information or data collected as part of this work. I currently have no employment, contract, statement of work, financial interest, share ownership or any other business relationship with ICANN, registries or registrars except as a registrant of several domain names. As part of my volunteer activities I give advice to various representatives of indigenous nomadic and semi-nomadic populations on Internet topics which include the possibility of obtaining a gTLD. I am currently involved in activities that may lead to the creation of an non governmental organization (NGO) whose primary purpose would be to assist indigenous groups as well as populations from the less developed nations, NGOs active in representing the needs of these populations, and other advocacy groups, in obtaining a presence on the Internet. These activities may involve providing assistance in obtaining a TLD, including assistance in raising the necessary funding for a TLD, when that is an appropriate solution to their goals.

Dear Council Members, This is a reminder to submit any comments you have regarding the draft 'supplementary material' distributed on Tuesday, 2 October, NLT 19:00 UTC on Monday, 8 October. The GNSO Workshop Planning Group has a meeting scheduled at that time in which it is planned to finalize the 'supplementary material' so it can be posted and distributed shortly thereafter, thereby making it publicly available in excess of two weeks before the ICANN meetings in L.A. Also, on Wednesday, 3 October, Chuck Gomes distributed 'Proposed New gTLD Workshop Plans' for Council comment NLT 21:00 UTC on Monday, 8 October. The GNSO Workshop Planning Group also plans to finalize those plans in its meeting that day so that the plans, including the agenda, can be posted and distributed and so that we can provide a briefing for the moderator and panel members well in advance of the workshop.
