Hi, I had meant to send an email about this earlier, but then the U.S. gov decided to steal the spotlight and attention (including mine) from most other issues. I was curious about the process and circumstances regarding this announcement: http://www.icann.org/en/news/announcements/announcement-12mar14-en.htm Last year, the EU's Article 29 Data Protection Working Party sent a letter to ICANN (http://www.icann.org/en/news/correspondence/kohnstamm-to-crocker-chehade-06…) requesting waivers to EU-based registrars, but ICANN did not seem to respond in agreement in their reply (http://www.icann.org/en/news/correspondence/jeffrey-to-kohnstamm-20sep13-en) So what changed? Was the ICANN Procedure For Handling Conflicts with Privacy Law used? Was it something else? I believe this is something worth taking notice of, especially with the ongoing WHOIS activities? I can’t seem to find any details? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Amr

Universal Acceptance session at ICANN49

Hello everyone, as some interest has been expressed in this important issue, I thought you and your constituents might be interested in a session on Universal Acceptance of All TLDs scheduled for the ICANN meeting in Singapore. It will be held on Monday 24 March from 15:15-16:45 Singapore time. You'll see from the attached abstract and format that plenty of time has been set aside for discussion and audience Q&A; in addition, since this is an issue that goes beyond ICANN and will require collaboration with industry vendors, we will also have Google and Microsoft representatives on the panel. The session is co-sponsored by the ccNSO-GNSO Joint IDN Working Group and the ALAC IDN Working Group. We hope that many GNSO community members will be able to attend and participate in the discussion. The ccNSO Council would greatly appreciate if you could consider participation of the GNSO during your upcoming meetings in Singapore, and inform us on the outcome of your deliberations in due course. The proposed draft charter for this WG is included. This intended working group is created following the adoption of the Final Report of the ccNSO Study Group on the use of Names of Country and Territories, which contained the recommendation to to establish a cross community working group to: Further review the current status of representations of country and territory names, as they exist under current ICANN policies, guidelines and procedures; Provide advice regarding the feasibility of developing a consistent and uniform definitional framework that could be applicable across the respective SOs and ACs; and Should such a framework be deemed feasible, provide detailed advice as to the content of the framework. The Study Group also advised that, as the objective of the proposed Working Group is considered to be of common interest to the broader community, other Supporting Organisations (SOs), Advisory Committees (ACs) should be invited to participate in the working group on equal footing, and the work should be preferably undertaken as a collaborative effort. For this reason a similar invitation is send to ALAC and the GAC. The ccNSO Study group on the use of Names for Country and Territory published its Final Report in September 2013 (http://ccnso.icann.org/node/42227 ).
