Call for volunteers Study Group on Use of Names for Countries and Territories

Dear all, The ccNSO is now seeking volunteers to our Study Group on the Use of Names for Countries and Territories. The study group is expected to: 1) provide an overview of current and proposed policies, guidelines and procedures for allocation and delegation of strings currently used or proposed to be used as TLDs that are either associated with Countries and Territories (i.e., by inclusion on the ISO 3166-1 list) and/or are otherwise considered representations of the names of Countries and Territories. 2. A comprehensive overview of the types and categories of strings currently used or proposed to be used as TLDs that are either associated with Countries and Territories (i.e., by inclusion on the ISO 3166-1 list) and/or are otherwise considered representations of Country and Territory names. 3. A comprehensive overview of issues arising (or likely to arise) in connection with applying the current and proposed policies, guidelines and procedures for allocation to types and categories of strings currently used or proposed to be used as TLDs that are either associated with Countries and Territories (i.e., by inclusion on the ISO 3166-1 list) and/or are otherwise considered representations of Country and Territory names. If considered appropriate by the study group, the study group will advise on a course of further actions, if any, to resolve issues identified under 3. All, Having dealt with the issue of a new Chair which we will formalise on our next call we now need to commence the process for filling the Asia Pacific vacancy on the council that will arise when I step down. I will resign from the Council on Friday 18th of March and it would be good to have my replacement organised by then. So, the Council needs to appoint Gabi as election manager so that she can then run the process of calling for nominations etc. Unless there are any objections I propose that Gabi be appointed election manager with effect from Noon UTC on Friday 11 Feb and send out the call for nominations as soon as possible. Process for Working Group Membership

Dear Councillors, During the ccNSO Council call yesterday, it was suggested by the ccNSO Secretariat to change the process in which new Working Group members are accepted. The current process is that all working group members need to be approved by the Council. As we quite often receive requests for working group membership outside of the call for volunteers period, we suggested, in order to speed up the process, that we only require the approval of the Working Group Chair, and then inform the Council on who has been added. It was, however, pointed out during yesterday’s discussion that in some cases “controversial people” might be able to obtain a working group seat if the process gets outside of the Council’s control and that that the changed procedures in general could be abused by people who were not approved by the Council in the first place. As this probably only would happen in very rare cases, it would be desirable that the Council comes up with a solution which would suit both the wish for a smoother and faster process, but would not leave the Council out of total control. A solution could be to introduce a right for the Council to “veto” a Working Group Chair decision. However, I would welcome more thoughts and suggestions on this. This topic will also be discussed during the upcoming Council call on the 1st March. Kind regards, Gabi

Whether you plan to participate in the upcoming ICANN meeting in San Francisco remotely or in person, you're invited to a quick reminder of the background and current status of each major policy issue currently under discussion in ICANN. The ICANN Policy Staff will provide a briefing on Thursday 3 March at 13.00 and 20.00 UTC, summarizing policy issues across the different ICANN Supporting Organizations, namely the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) and Address Supporting Organization (ASO). Amongst other topics, updates will be provided on: - Registration Abuse Policies Recommendations (GNSO) - New gTLD Recommendation 6 WG - Post-Expiration Domain Name Recovery (GNSO) - Recent WHOIS work - Country names study group (ccNSO) - Delegation and Re-delegation Working Group (ccNSO) - Joint DNS Security and Stability Analysis Working Group - Global policy for handling recovered IPv4 address space (ASO) The two sessions are duplicates, scheduled to accommodate different time zones. Each session, scheduled to run for 90 minutes, will be conducted in English only. The meeting will be run in Adobe Connect with a slide presentation along with a dial-in conference bridge for audio. Participants will have opportunity to ask questions at the end of each session. During the course of the webinar, questions may be submitted using the chat function of Adobe Connect.
