FYI: Survey ICANN Legitimacy Study

Dear all, Recently, ahead of ICANN63, we were informed by Professor Jan Scholte at the University of Gothenburg of a major study on ICANN legitimacy, funded by the Swedish Research Council, which is led by him. It is a fully independent and academically professional investigation about the present condition and possible future development of ICANN. A key part of this research consists of a survey interview. To get the most precise and reliable information, Jan and his team have randomly selected a number of participants across the Board, community, staff of ICANN, and from the ccNSO. Should you be one of the people to receive an invitation to take part in the study, your views are considered of crucial importance for the success of the project. The interview takes 30-40 minutes and will be scheduled at your convenience. Responses are completely voluntary and will be kept strictly anonymous and confidential. Kind regards, Bart Boswinkel

next steps: call for nominations/secondments to the ccNSO council closed

Dear all, On Wednesday, 3 October 2018, 23.59 UTC, the call for nominations to fill 5 seats in the ccNSO Council was closed. For each of the 5 geographic regions, at least 1 candidate has been nominated and seconded. Next steps After closure of the nomination period, the Election Manager will ask the candidates that are nominated and seconded whether they accept their nomination. The deadline for acceptance of the nominations is Thursday. 11 October 2018, noon UTC. Following this deadline, the list of candidates will be published on the ccNSO website. If at the close of nominations there are no more valid candidates in a particular geographic region than there are seats on the ccNSO Council available for that geographic region, then the nominated candidates shall be selected to serve on the ccNSO Council. Otherwise, an election shall be held for that geographic region, to select the ccNSO Councillors from among the valid candidates. The timeline for the elections (if any) is included in the link section below. At the Q&A session - held during the ccNSO Members Meeting at ICANN63 in Barcelona - there will be an opportunity for the ccNSO members and broader ccTLD community to interact with the candidates. The session chair is Peter Vergote (.be). The Q&A session with the candidates for the ccNSO council is scheduled for day 1 of the ccNSO Members Meeting, on Tuesday, 23 October 2018 between 14:20 - 15:00 local time in Room 114. apply for ccNSO Travel funding for ICANN64

Dear All, Between today, Thursday, 4 October 2018 (noon UTC) and Thursday, 18 October 2018 (noon UTC) it is possible to apply for ccNSO travel funding to attend the ICANN64 public meeting, taking place in March 2019 in Kobe, Japan. No early/late submissions will be accepted. What are the requirements for applicants? The applicant actively participates in the work of the ccNSO and makes a special contribution to its projects and meetings. Examples of contributions to the work of the ccNSO: an active engagement in a ccNSO working group, a presentation at the ccNSO member meeting, or other engagements that strengthen the activities of the ccNSO. Important: Applications which do not clearly state an active contribution, are not eligible and will not be taken into consideration. What is included? The funding covers an economy class ticket to the travel destination, the hotel costs for the time of the meeting and a per diem (either full funding, or partial funding). ccNSO Travel Fund Guideline: https://ccnso.icann.org/en/about/guidelines.htm How to apply? ICANN Announces a Webinar to Update the Community on Strategic Planning

Dear all, Join the ICANN Board and organization for a webinar on 9 October 2018 at 14:00 UTC [local time] for an update on ICANN strategic planning. This webinar will provide an overview of the strategic planning process, and present findings from the strategic outlook trend sessions and the subsequent analysis by the Board and ICANN org. The webinar will provide background information and context ahead of the strategic planning session scheduled at ICANN63 (to be announced). A recording of the webinar will be made available. Background Information Strategic planning is a fundamental part of ICANN's governance. Mandated by the organization's Bylaws, the strategic plan articulates ICANN's vision; restates ICANN's mission; and sets forth strategic objectives / goals for the next five years. The approach to develop the next iteration of the next strategic plan consists of four phases: trends identification, prioritization and analysis, drafting, and finalization of the plan. The community, Board, and ICANN org completed the process of identifying strategic outlook trends in June 2018. The Board and ICANN org then conducted an analysis of key priority trends and their impacts on ICANN. These findings will inform the strategic plan for the fiscal period 2021 to 2025. Once finalized, the strategic plan will be put into action through ICANN's five-year and annual operating plans, which specify how we will execute our work in order to meet the objectives laid out in the strategic plan. Kind regards, Bart Questions from the Board: - What will be your main priorities in 2019? - How should ICANN's multistakeholder model of governance and Policy Development Process evolve to balance the increasing need for inclusivity, accountability and transparency, with the imperative of getting our work done and our policies developed in a more effective and timely manner, and with the efficient utilization of ICANN’s resources? Topics suggested by the ccNSO Council (in order of preference): - What is the view of the Board on how ICANN's multistakeholder model of governance and Policy Development Process should evolve to balance the increasing need for inclusivity, accountability and transparency, with the imperative of getting our work done and our policies developed in a more effective and timely manner, and with the efficient utilization of ICANN’s resources? (Katrina Sataki) - What does the Board consider strategic priorities for the upcoming Strategic Plan? What will be ICANN’s strategic focus with respect to ccTLDs for the next 5 years? (Giovanni Seppia) - In San Juan the ccNSO asked how the Board intends to ensure that a Board decision affecting an individual SO/ACs is communicated to the respective SO/ACs, including the background, expected timelines and expected impact on priorities and how the Board follows up on their own decisions. The example at eh time was the set of Board decisions with respect to the Emojis, following SAC 095. At the time It was agreed that a page with the detailed information on Board’s decisions regarding the ccNSO would be created. Has anything been done in this area, and what is the respective URL?
