Background material - ccNSO onboarding mentor / mentee program

Dear All The ICANN Community Onboarding Pilot program started within the ICANN Public Responsibility Department ( https://www.icann.org/public-responsibility) that is in charge of, among others, the following programs: 1. Fellowship Program 2. NextGen Program 3. ICANN Learn 4. Newcomer Program 5. Leadership Program To define the procedures for the ccNSO team (mentor/mentee), the ICANN Fellowship Coaching Guidelines served as an inspiration: https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/fellowship-coaching-guidelines-… . Those guidelines, together with following the good practices from other constituencies and various onboarding programs, have resulted in creating a set of activities that the ccNSO onboarding team is required to perform: 1. Activities *before* the ICANN meeting: reading the Quick guide to the ccNSO (or taking the equivalent ICANN Learn course), getting introduced to the ccNSO website and wiki documentation, having Skype calls to meet up, answer questions and plan other activities. 2. Activities *during* the meeting: attending ccNSO and other relevant sessions, networking with the ccNSO and ICANN community, finding relevant connections depending on the respecting area of interest of the mentee/mentees. 3. Activities *after* the meeting: answering the questionnaires about the experience, writing a report about the mentor/mentee participation at the meeting, setting a plan for future engagement in the ccNSO community. 1. It is expected that a mentee gets acquainted enough to the work of ccNSO and ICANN community, to be ready to become a member of a WG, CCWG, contribute online and/or continue any form of active participation. 2. Another outcome of this program is for the previous mentees to become mentors to the new people, so this chain of mentorship is broadened and strengthened during each ICANN meeting. The accomplishments of the ccNSO onboarding team to date are: 1. The quick guide to the ccNSO: https://community.icann.org/display/COP22/ccNSO and it’s hardcopy version being distributed for four meetings already (up to 200 copies distributed) 2. Following up on newcomers by the ccNSO onboarding team. 5. A first draft of a mentor guide. 6. Mentor/mentee activities repository for monitoring and deliverables. The ccNSO community could benefit from the structure of this program and help decrease the volunteers burnout by training and mentoring new people. The ALAC recommends dedicating enough time to ensure inconsistencies do not result due to misinterpretation of the recommendations. Draft Final Report of the NomCom2 Review [community.icann.org](https://community.icann.org/x/y4LpB) On the whole, the ALAC believes the ICANN NomCom system has been working well considering the significant challenges it faces. The ALAC made 8 general comments to improve the function of the NomCom, noting that while confidentiality needs to be maintained, whenever possible, open, transparent processes should be adopted to represent the multistakeholder nature of ICANN. Draft Project Plan for the Proposed Name Collision Analysis Project (NCAP) [community.icann.org] (https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=79438448) As the principle voice of end users within the ICANN community, the ALAC supported the SSAC in its efforts to address the issue of Name Collisions, while encouraging clarity on the SSAC's bidding process for work contemplated under the Draft Project Plan. ICANN Reserve Fund: Proposed Replenishment Strategy [community.icann.org] [community.icann.org] [community.icann.org](https://community.icann.org/display/alacpolicydev/At-L… [community.icann.org]The ALAC supports the overall strategy, with several important conditions related to operational savings, auction proceeds, per-domain registrar fees and revenue. Release for Registration one .COM Domain Name with a Single-Character Label: O.COM [community.icann.org] (https://community.icann.org/display/alacpolicydev/At-Large+Workspace%3A+Rel…) Given the lack of both stability and competition concerns, the ALAC believes the introduction of O.com represents no downside to end users. The ALAC further suggests that the proceeds of the auction be used to make concrete progress on universal acceptance, one of the primary frustrations of end users with regards to the introduction of new top level domains. During this meeting in Panama ALAC members will elect also the new chair since Alan Greenberg term ends by the end of this year. 2018 Multistakeholder Ethos Award Honors Stéphane Van Gelder

Dear All, The Multistakeholder Ethos Award honors members of the ICANN community who have made outstanding contributions to ICANN’s multistakeholder model of Internet governance. This year, the community selection panel posthumously recognized a long-time member of the ICANN community: Stéphane Van Gelder. The award was presented today at ICANN62 in Panama City to Stéphane Van Gelder’s wife Julie Talfournier Van Gelder. Stéphane Van Gelder was selected from a list of 16 nominees as the person who best demonstrated the spirit of collaboration, strongly promoting consensus. The community selection panel composed of nine members from different Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees recognized Van Gelder for his dedication and commitment to ICANN’s multistakeholder model, which served as an example to others in the community.
